Kaujigattsak Northern Lights Ilinniavingani Nittugalik Angiggana Northern Lights Academy Newsletter Home of the Eagles April 2015 Aprel Principal's Message Welcome to our April Newsletter. We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Thank you to the staff and students for their contributions. We are now in the last few weeks of our Academic year. I would like to remind students to remain focused on their studies and to always put your best effort forward. The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will. Vince Lombardi
Greetings from the Elementary Classroom! By all accounts, the Elementary students enjoyed their Easter Break. Many travelled to the cabin or to Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Even though the weather was very cold, everyone appreciated the time off from school. Apparently, the Easter Bunny was good to all. Prior to the Easter break, the students in the Elementary grades participated in many activities such as Crazy Hair Day, Snow Sculptures, colouring Easter Egg patterns, and sending our I.O.D.E. friends Easter card greetings and Easter colouring sheet work. Our students also watched an Easter movie, King of Kings, for their Religion program. There was also a movie, a cake and a game of "casino" for the last day of school before the Easter break. Our Elementary students continue to do well academically, just as they did in the previous term. They are encouraged to keep up the good work as we start the last term for this school year. Over the Easter break, Samantha celebrated her birthday an April 5th. Later this month, on April 22nd., Ryan will celebrate his birthday. All the best to you both! April 22nd is also Earth Day and we hope everyone will take some time to think about how we can keep our environment healthy! Scholastic Book Orders have been passed out to all students in grades 4-12. This could possibly be the last book order for this school year. Book orders are due Friday, April 24th, at 1:00 p.m. in Room 8. Those ordering are reminded to have
their names on the order forms and please have the exact change. The Card Hockey Tournament trophies have arrived and will be presented to Ocean, (First Place) and Rodney, (Second Place) on Friday, April 24th. We will also have a class activity period and some cake to celebrate our successful Card Hockey Tournament. We would like to congratulate our athletes for their success in last month's Winter Sportsmeet. We were so proud of the great showing by Haley, Kierden, Michaela, Vincent, Matthew and Ronald. Their great efforts were rewarded with 36 medals. Way to go Eagles! We wish everyone a very happy and safe spring season! School spirit was alive at NLA during the week prior to Easter Holidays! Each day of the week leading up to the closure had an exciting theme. Participation in the activities each day counted as poin ts to go towards the house teams. The four house teams at NLA are: The Crazy Cheetahs, The SilverWings, The Crocs and The Overcooked Muppacakes! On Monday, March 30 th the challenge was to your create and wear a pair of bunny ears. There was a good participation and a lot of creativity! Also on Monday there was a snow sculpture competition. This was done with homerooms and most classes used an Easter theme. Sculptures included Large Easter baskets and eggs, bunnies, large decorated eggs and even Minions! It was a lovely afternoon spent making memories and enjoying the sun!
On Tuesday, March 31 st the school got creative for crazy hair day! The hairstyles did not disappoint. For Wednesday, April 1 st we had fun with some April Fools activities. Students were challenged to build a trap to catch the Easter Bunny. The diagrams of the traps were on display for a week! On the last day before the break it was an Olden Days Theme. Like their grandparents students and staff were encouraged to walk to school instead of driving or getting a ride! Also, they were asked to bring in a junk of wood. Wayne Palliser was the lucky winner of all the wood that was brought in that day! Congrats Wayne! All in all a lot of points were accumulated for each house team and it seems like the students and staff enjoyed the activities. Great news to end with was that we collected 10, 328 cans during Can Week. The grade 2-3 class brought in the most cans per capita and Keira brought in the most cans over all! Recycling this week we raised $722.96 for NLA! Way to go! Prior to this exciting week we celebrated Apple Day on March 27 th. We had a delicious apple themed recess donated by
Northern and prepared by Ms. Ruth. It was a graham cracker with peanut butter and an apple slice. Promoting healthy eating is always important especially when you get to try out the snacks at school!
