Learning Goals of Scientific Process & Lab Safety I will be able to: Describe the meaning of all safety symbols Understand class procedures during labs. Know where all safety equipment is located. Know how to work with a microscope

Safety and Rules of the Lab

Be Prepared Read lab instructions ahead of time Be prepared with a plan and list of materials for how to perform the experiment Know what safety is needed Never do an unauthorized experiment

Safety Symbols Know what they mean Record as part of laboratory activities Look for them in any laboratory information you read

Eye Safety Wear safety goggles when working with chemicals, flames, heating devices, or potential flying debris Wear goggles to protect your eyes and not your head If you wear contact lenses, let your teacher know In case of emergency in which a chemical goes into one s eye, use the eyewash station Flush in water for 15 minutes and notify the teacher

Proper Attire Keep all long hair tied back Do not wear loose clothing/jewelry that could catch on fire or get chemicals on you. Footwear that covers the foot is required.

Skin Safety If a chemical spills on your skin, notify the teacher and rinse with water for 15 minutes Wash hands before and after every lab Handle glassware, sharp tools and heated containers carefully Wear goggles and aprons Do not wear any hanging clothing

Shoes

Sharp Objects Always cut away from fingers and body Always carry sharp objects with points and tips facing down and away Never try to catch falling sharp instruments Grasp sharp instruments only by the handles

Broken Glass 1. 1. Tell Sharp the objects teacher. (like 2. The disposable teacher glass will clean pipets, up the cutting glass. tools, DO NOT broken CLEAN glass, etc.) UP should BROKEN be GLASS stored in YOURSELF. a special sharps container.

Physical Safety Handle all equipment carefully Do not place a cord where someone can get caught up in it Push all stools in out of the way Keep backpacks under tables and out of walking isles

Heating Safety Never leave a heat source unattended Heated metal and glass looks cool, use tongs or gloves before handling Do not place hot glassware directly on lab desk or in cold water

Chemical Safety Read all labels twice before removing a chemical from the container Only use the type and amount of chemical instructed to use Never touch, taste, or smell a chemical unless instructed by the teacher Never mix chemicals unless instructed to do so If anything spills, notify the teacher immediately. DO NOT try to clean it up unless instructed to do so by the teacher.

Animal Safety Only handle living organisms with teacher permission Always treat living organisms humanely Wash your hands after handling living organisms

Treatment of Specimens Respect the life of all laboratory specimens They gave their life for your education Always wash your hands after working with a specimen

Plant Safety Do not eat any plants in lab Wash your hands after handling plants Tell your teacher of any plant allergies Like any organism, plants should be considered possibly harmful

You Should Never Enter store room unless given permission Take any chemicals from lab or store room Touch any equipment, chemicals, or other materials until instructed to do so

You Should Never Eat or drink in the lab No chewing gum in the lab Drink or eat out of lab glassware Do not engage in practical jokes horse play rough house

In case of an emergency Know the locations of: fire extinguisher fire blanket body shower eyewash station Nurse s office If you spill a harmful chemical on yourself or in your eyes, start rinsing immediately and send your partner to get teacher s help

Some Definitions Fume Hood - A vacuum to remove harmful chemicals and vapors. Wafting the safe way to sample a chemical aroma. Move your hand towards your nose.

Remember to Stay at work station Maintain clean work area Read and follow all directions Report any spills, accidents, or injury to the teacher immediately Clean and put away all equipment at the end of the lab period Dispose of waste products according to instruction

If you get something on you or are hurt TELL YOUR TEACHER IMMEDIATELY! DO NOT DO RUN NOT TO PANIC. THE RESTROOM! I cannot help you if you are panicked. I cannot help you there.

A Little Music Please Lab Safety Rap

Microscope Handling How to carry Cleaning a lens

Getting a Slide in Focus Placing a slide on the stage properly Start at lowest focus (4x) Coarse and fine adjustment knobs

Calculating Magnification Ocular lens Objective lens

Proper Cleanup & Storage Turn off microscope. Remove slide & raise the stage Put to 4x objective lens Unplug and wrap cord around base Put on ocular lens cover Put cover over microscope and put away
