LAKE ATHENS The property About Lake Athens Lake Athens is located 5 miles east of Athens and 70 miles southeast of Dallas. The 1,800-acre lake is spring fed with a sandy bottom and is considered one of the most pristine lakes in the state of Texas. The lake was impounded in 1962 and is known for Largemouth bass in the 3 to 8 pound range and is home to the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center. Approximately 2/3 of the 270 homes on the lake are local residents who are not active recreational boaters. The constant level lake is never crowded with boaters and has much calmer water than surrounding lakes.
