footprints NEWSLETTER For Indy Runners, Walkers & Racers Spring 2017 Letter from the President Dear Fellow Indy Runners, It s hard to believe my term is coming to an end and this is my last letter to you all as President of Indy Runners. The past two years have truly lown by and I m proud of all the great things we ve done and continue to do for the Central Indiana running community. Some of the things I m most proud of are the renovation of the deck in Broad Ripple which added some life to our Saturday morning home, planting trees along the Monon, back-to-back trees record breaking years at the Groundhog 7, continuing to grow the Sam Costa Half Marathon, implementing the Erica Wells Memorial Scholarship fund, and watching our Water Fountain project start to take life! Needless to say, the many incredible things our club does would not be possible without countless volunteer hours from our Pacers, devoted members and Board of Directors. Thank you all for everything you do for our club. As I roll off as President, I will remain on the Board as our Sponsorship Chair. So please let me know if you d like more information on how you or your business can help support our club. I m so grateful to have had the opportunity to lead the best running club in the state. Please feel scholarship free to contact me at president@ indyrunners.org if there s anything you need from me or if you have any feedback on how the club is doing. I m so grateful to have had the opportunity to lead the best running club in the state. Leslie Teskey Bonacker Indy Runners; President deck WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! Tell us about your latest race & we ll publish it our next issue. Submit all copy and photos to newsletter@indyrunners.org. More info on our club runs, walks, races and social events online at www.indyrunners.org

Groundhog 7 Days after Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, runners and walkers came together for a local winter tradition, the Groundhog 7. The record crowd of 595 inishers enjoyed early-spring temperatures and sunshine as they ran the roads and paths near Zionsville High School. This long-standing race was irst established as a training run, alongside the Sam Costa Half Marathon, as local runners prepared for a spring marathon. It continues to serve that purpose, as well as provide an opportunity for runners to reconnect with one another. In lieu of an entry fee, participants were asked to bring non-perishable food items for the Zionsville Food Pantry. The more than 2,000 pounds of food collected will be matched to help feed the hungry in the area. Special thanks to Don Keller who has served as race director in recent years and Jesse Davis who will be stepping into the role beginning in 2018. Thank you to our volunteers, club sponsors and the City of Zionsville, without whom we wouldn t be able to keep the event free for all.

A Family Afair subhead subhead subhead As a family, the Burgers represent many facets of the Indy Runners community they run, race, socialize and volunteer. For over 15 years mom Mary Burger has been a member of Indy Runners. She started running with the Spring Half Marathon Training Program, using its structure to help her transition from running the occasional 5K to crossing half marathon inish lines. More recently, Mary has taken advantage of group runs focused on summer and fall races and has turned seasonal running into a yearround activity. She jokes that she began by walking, before realized she could pack more exercise into less time if she picked up the pace and ran. Daughter Megan began running in college while she was living in France. Like many, she found it a great way to see the city in which she lived. Back home, she signed up for her irst 500 Festival Mini Marathon and found a training program registration in her Christmas stocking. The pair began running together as Indy Runners members and have continued to this day. Described as having ambitious time goals by her mom, Megan insists that she runs and races for fun, although she admits that it s hard not to try to push to go faster or further as she competes against herself. While both ladies have run marathons - and not for lack of nudging by Mary - dad Mike hasn t been bitten by the running bug. However, he has wholeheartedly embraced Indy Runners commitment to volunteerism. The three often work together at Butler Men s Basketball games taking tickets, a gesture that allows the club to use Hinkle Fieldhouse throughout the year for the Spring Training Program and weekly Tuesday night group runs. Mary, Mike, Rachel and Megan Burger at the 2016 Sam Costa Half Marathon When not training, volunteering or attending to demanding careers, Megan can be found playing bike polo or kayaking. Mary enjoys traveling and volunteering for numerous organizations. As a family, you ll likely ind them enjoying a Pacers game, cycling or visiting one of the city s microbreweries. Looking back at the past 15 years, Mary relects on how the faces have changed while the club has remained a consistent part of the running and itness community. Advice from the Burgers? Take advantage of the experience and support of fellow club members, especially if you re tackling new goals or distances. Megan agrees and notes that Indy Runners offers a diverse and supportive community for runners and walkers of all levels.
