Dear Royal Candidate Parents/Guardians, The tryout date for the Royals Drill Team will be Thursday, March 24 th, 2016. It is important that you are aware of what is expected from each dancer on the day of tryouts. It is also important to understand the responsibilities of the dancers who make the team. A great commitment is required from each parent whose child is selected as a member of the Royals Drill Team. The Tryout Clinic will run March 21 st -23 rd at Paloma Creek Elementary School s gymnasium, after school from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm to allow all candidates the time to make way to a central location. During the clinic each dancer will learn a jazz/pom routine, a kick routine, and participate in a mock tryout. Every dancer, unless academically ineligible or suspended, will attend all daily clinics in order to learn the routines and expectations of tryouts. If a candidate is academically ineligible, they must attend all daily practices, but only to observe. The ineligible candidate will become eligible to tryout on Thursday, March 24 th. All candidates should wear comfortable clothing that they can move in during the clinic. No jeans, crop tops, boots, or sandals will be allowed. March 24 th is the only tryout date that will be offered. Tryouts will begin promptly at 6:00 pm and will end when all candidates have performed and callbacks are complete. Each candidate must stay for the full tryout period in order to allow for judging callbacks and full group tryouts if necessary. Tryouts are closed to the public. Parents and friends must wait outside the school in order to give candidates full concentration and focus on tryouts. Once the judging is complete and the decision for next year s team is made, the tryout numbers of the candidates chosen for the team will be posted on the Royals website. This can be either a very exciting time or a very disappointing time, so please be supportive of your dancer. There is no set number of dancers on the team. Membership depends on how many candidates tryout and on their score variations a natural break in the total score. The candidates will tryout in front of judges who are qualified in the area of dance and drill team. Judges are from outside the Denton Independent School District. THE JUDGES DECISION IS FINAL. There will be a required parent meeting on Tuesday, February 23 rd, at 7:00 pm in the Navo Middle School Cafeteria. Both the candidate and one parent/guardian of all candidates who wish to tryout must attend this meeting. This will be a time to give you additional information and answer any questions you might have. Your dancer will not be allowed to tryout if they do not have a parent/guardian attend the meeting or contact the director if there is a conflict. Please read and make sure you completely understand all of the attached information. All attached forms must be completed by you and your child and turned in to Miss Shelburne either at the Braswell High School Office located at Paloma Creek Elementary School or Denton High School, no later than Friday, March 11 th. If you have any questions, please call me at (940) 369-2125 or email me at kshelburne@dentonisd.org.

Prospective members shall be entering grade nine (9) through eleven (11). A candidate who is academically ineligible for extracurricular participation during the nine-week grading period in which auditions occur may audition to become a Royal but may not participate in the after school clinic. The candidate will be allowed to attend the clinic, but will be responsible for learning the audition routines on their own time and must check in with the director each day during the audition workshop to receive any necessary information. All candidates and their parents must attend the February 23 rd meeting for tryout information. Failure to attend or meet with the director will result in the candidate s inability to audition. Prospective members and their parents must be fully aware of the time and expense in becoming a Royal. A prospective member must currently attend a D.I.S.D. school. Candidates will be expected to perform a specific required routine at auditions. A panel of three (3) qualified judges shall evaluate the performance of the candidates for line membership. Selection of line members will be based on the sum of all three judges. Dear Royals Candidate, Involvement and participation are the Royals fundamental principles. It is my opinion that an important part of scholastic maturity is gained by joining and actively participating in extracurricular functions. The Royals offer one of the best means for students to grow with others their own age. The drill team offers companionship while concurrently teaching discipline, perseverance and selfmotivation. The result is an organization in which each member can be truly proud. It is my desire that your time spent in Royals will be a rewarding, learning experience for you. You must dedicate many hours of hard work for personal improvement. YOU MUST WANT TO BE A ROYAL! Your decision to be a part of the Royals line is an important one, consider it carefully. Good Luck! Sincerely, Miss Shelburne

FINANCES PLEASE READ THIS SECTION CAREFULLY BECAUSE THE FINANCIAL OPERATIONS OF THE ROYALS ORGANIZATION SEEMS TO CAUSE THE MOST CONFUSION. IF YOU STILL HAVE QUESTIONS AFTER READING THIS SECTION, PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO ASK. Listed below is an itemized list of expenses that could be incurred by new members. Hopefully, this will give candidates an idea of what to expect in terms of financial obligations. The largest sum of money is due in April following tryouts; however, some items may be purchased over a period of time. This list is not inclusive and it must be realized by all members and parents that additions must be made from time to time. Great care is taken by the director to keep costs as low as possible. Note: this list is only to give you an idea of what to expect. These costs will be split up into payments throughout the summer and fall semester. Costs incurred by the individual (all are over-estimates and are not exact amounts) Practice attire (includes tops, pants, jazz shoes, bag, etc.) - $350.00 Uniform attire (wind suit, hat, squad shirt, field boots) - $250.00 Miscellaneous (spirit wear, basics for spring show) - $100.00 Camp - $355.00 The school provides the official field uniforms. These uniforms are issued to the members and returned at the end of the school year. If part of the uniform issued is not returned or is damaged, the member will then have to cover the cost of that item. The above items are ordered as a group rather than individual and an exact list will be provided after tryouts. When looking at the total cost, please realize what you would be paying for dance lessons five times a week, dancewear, dance conventions that would be attended, and recital fees. If you have never been involved in dance before, I encourage you to look into these costs and compare. In addition, practice attire is purchased the first year only. The cost of participation significantly drops for the 2 nd, 3 rd, and 4 th years. There will be payment plans available as well as fundraising opportunities to help cover costs. Communication with the director is key when creating payment plans.

THE FOUR SEASONS OF BEING A ROYAL Being a Royal means commitment for all four seasons. Royal activities begin immediately following auditions and continue throughout the year, until the following auditions. This involves commitment on the member s part for a full year. I. SPRING (March-May) A. TEAM PRACTICES TBD B. COMPETITION is anywhere from late January, February, to early March. There will be occasional Saturday practices as needed for Competition and Spring Show. C. AUDITIONS are the first activity of the new squad, usually held in early to mid-spring. D. SPRING SHOW will usually be held in March-April. The Royals will begin preparing for the show immediately after competition if not earlier. E. ROYAL OFFICER AUDITIONS are held in March-April following Line Auditions. A member must be current for at least one year before being eligible to audition for an officer position (from previous school). Sophomores or Juniors will be allowed to audition the Royals first year. F. TRAINING for the new line will take place during April-May. The purpose of this training is to prepare the new line for community performances and camp. II. III. IV. SUMMER A. OFFICER CAMP is in early June. The exact place and date varies from year to year. Camp lasts 3 days and is mandatory for the dance officers. B. SUMMER PRACTICE is scheduled to take place for the week prior to camp (July-August). These practice sessions are mandatory for all Royals and are important in preparing the team for camp and football season performances. C. TEAM CAMP will be held mid-august. Camp lasts 3 days and is required of all team members. FALL A. TEAM PRACTICES begin when school starts. The Royals practice every day. Practice sessions will be before or after school as well as during the Royals Drill Team Block Scheduled. Morning band practices will be once per week for all Royals. Time and day TBD. B. PEP RALLIES are held throughout Football season. The Royals actively participate in all of the pep rallies. C. FOOTBALL GAMES are held weekly throughout the months of September, October, and early November (playoffs into December). Members are required to attend all games including potential playoff games. Games could be on a Thursday or Friday, occasionally on Saturday during playoffs. WINTER A. BASKETBALL GAMES which the team attends are pre-scheduled and all academically eligible members are required to attend. The Royals will perform at selected games. B. COMPETITION PRACTICE begins during the months of December and January. All competition material is taught at these practices. After school and weekend practices may be required depending upon the availability of gym space. C. COMPETITION is anywhere from late January, February, to early March. The drill team is a full year commitment. If you, or your child, feel that they cannot meet these expectations, they should not participate in the auditions. It is an honor to be selected as a member of this organization. It requires enthusiasm and dedication, not only from the dancers, but from the parents as well. The team can be the best only if it has your support. I hope each of you will be willing to give your support to your dancer and the team as they prepare for a successful year!
