CL83-CL84 (5.0 cu. ft.) Abstract: General Charles King was born in Albany, New York in 1844; he was the son of Civil War General Rufus King. Charles King graduated from West Point in 1866 and served in a number of campaigns against the various Indian tribes in conflict with the United States in the 1870s. He served as an instructor and National Guard officer in the 1880s and 1890s. General King served as Brigadier General of US Volunteers during the Spanish-American War in the Philippines. He taught military science and tactics at St. John s Military Academy in Delafield, Wisconsin and was on duty with the Wisconsin National Guard from 1904 until his retirement in 1931. Charles King was the author of Famous and Decisive Battles of the World (1884) and The True Ulysses S. Grant (1914), as well as other novels and short stories. Scope and Content: This collection consists primarily of letters written to various persons by Brigadier General Charles King. The collection also includes a personal library of Charles King containing many of his novels and short stories on army life. Administrative Info: The collection was donated by many individuals including his Charles King s son. The collection was processed and added to in later years. The finding aid was retyped in July 2009.
