Recreation Guidelines Use of recreation facilities, programs and services is a privilege. Valid university or membership identification is required of all students, staff, and community members for use in all facilities. Fraudulent use of identification to gain access to recreation facilities or programs will result in loss of all facility and program privileges. Harassment of university students, faculty, staff, members, guests or employees, disruption of activities, misuse of equipment, endangerment of others or willful destruction of property will result in loss of privileges and disciplinary actions involving NMU Public Safety (See NMU Student Handbook, Student Code). Youth and Child access policy: Non members wishing to use the facility without a parent or guardian present must be at least 14 years of age. Non members under age 14 may NOT use any fitness area (ie. weight room, cardio area, fitness studios). Please see the Information Center with questions regarding memberships for those under age 14. Equipment rental is limited to current PEIF Recreation members only! Members wishing to rent equipment must provide their membership ID card in exchange for use of equipment. Day pass users must present a valid photo ID for equipment rental. No other collateral will be accepted. Participation in programs, classes, and informal recreation contains an element of inherent danger including serious injury or even death. Participation in all activities is on a voluntary basis at the individual s own risk. All participants are strongly encouraged to undergo a physical examination and consult with their personal physician before participating in recreational activities. Policies specific to recreational areas within the PEIF Recreation Complex (ie. pool, fitness studios, weight room, climbing wall, etc.) may be found online or at the Information Center.

General Policies 1. All members must show his or her university or membership ID. Individuals not possessing memberships must purchase a day pass and have their hand stamped. 2. IDs used to gain illegal entrance into Rec Facilities or programs will be confiscated. Members allowing facility or program access to non-members will be removed from the facility and membership terminated. 3. Alcohol, tobacco, and all banned substances are not permitted in any area of the Recreation complex. 4. It is required that a parent/guardian remain in the immediate activity area in which his/her child is participating in any program. 5. Fighting, and abusive, vulgar, or disruptive language and actions will not be tolerated and are grounds for immediate removal from the facility. 6. Show respect for equipment and facilities at all times; replacing and cleaning equipment after it is used and reporting abuse of or unsafe behaviors is appreciated. 7. Appropriate athletic attire and footwear is required at all times. 8. Picture taking and/or videotaping is only permissible after obtaining written authorization from Rec Sports Staff. 9. Only Rec Sports Staff may move equipment. 10. Injuries, accidents, or equipment failures must be reported immediately to Rec Sports Staff. 11. Northern Michigan University is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Please secure your belongings in a locker, with a lock. 12. Personal Training and Swim Instruction are to be conducted by Northern Michigan University Rec Sports Staff ONLY. 13. Exercise in extreme heat is at the discretion of Rec Sports Staff. Please follow exercise recommendations when heat related warnings are posted. 14. In the event of an emergency, patrons are required to exit the building or follow the directions of Rec Sports Staff and NMU Emergency Personnel. Facility Access Policy Patrons with the following types of membership(s) are allowed use of the facilities during regularly posted building hours: 1. Currently enrolled full time undergraduate and graduate student Rec Pass members 2. Faculty/Staff members 3. Community members 4. Day pass and Group reservation participants *Those age 4 and under are admitted free

Day Pass and Group Reservation Policy 1. Day Pass participants must: a. Be at least 14 years of age on the day the pass is purchased b. Write their full name legibly on the day pass slip c. Have their hand stamped and possess their day pass for the entire length of their duration at the PEIF d. Provide their own equipment (racquets, balls, etc.), unless they have a valid photo id card to use for equipment rental. 2. Group Reservation participants must: a. Sign their name legibly on the group reservation sheet b. Get their hand stamped c. Be under supervision of a parent/guardian/supervisor at all times d. Have made prior arrangements for the group to utilize facility General Room Usage Lobby Areas 1. Rooms (ie. courts/studios/classrooms/areas) must be reserved prior to use 2. Groups must leave the room at their scheduled time 3. The room is to be left in the same orderly condition in which it was found 4. Food and drinks are not permitted in recreational areas without permission from full time staff 5. Fees will be assessed for any misuse or damage to facility areas and contents. 6. Only Rec Sports staff may move the furniture and other contents in the area 7. Noise is to be kept at a minimum. 1. Food and drink are permitted 2. Lounge furniture is not to be used for sleeping 3. Please clean up any mess that you make from food, beverage, or homework 4. Should not be used to store personal belongings Equipment Rental 1. Patrons must present a valid membership card to the Information Center in order to check out equipment (Day pass users must present a valid photo id to rent equipment). Patrons may be charged a small fee for some rental items, and may be charged a fee for damaged equipment. 2. Equipment must be returned prior to closing time each day. Failure to return equipment will result in members being charged for the missing item, and loss of their identification card until the item is replaced.

3. Towel service-a used shower towel can be exchanged for a clean one at the Information Center. 4. Towels will ONLY be issued to those who have purchased the towel service, or paid for daily towel use. Racquetball/Walleyball/Ping Pong Rules Racquetball/Wallyball 1. The use of closed eyeguards is highly recommended. 2. All participants must wear court shoes. 3. All players must check in at the Information Center prior to entering their reserved court. Failure to check in by 10 minutes past the scheduled playing time will result in court forfeiture and courts will be reassigned. 4. ID is required at check in for court reservations, access, and to rent equipment. 5. Racquets, racquetballs, and eyewear are available for checkout. The individual assumes full responsibility of the equipment that has been checked out, and fees will be assessed for lost, stolen, or damaged equipment. 6. For your protection keep all clothing, bags, etc. in a locker, not in the racquetball hallway. 7. Shirts must be worn at all times. 8. Avoid striking the court walls and doors with racquets. Members must refrain from deliberate abuse of courts. Deliberate abuse of walls, floors, doors, etc. will result in loss of court privileges. Ping Pong 1. All participants must wear court shoes. 2. All players must check in at the Information Center prior to entering their reserved court. Failure to check in by 10 minutes past the scheduled playing time will result in court forfeiture and courts will be reassigned. 3. Avoid leaning on or moving ping pong tables from their permanent position. Rec Sports staff is available to assist if equipment needs to be moved.

Weight Room Rules 1. Users must be 14 years of age or older. 2. If you have questions or are unfamiliar with any of the equipment, please ask the Rec Staff for assistance. 3. Patrons should use caution when lifting weights to avoid potential injuries to themselves or others. 4. The use of weight belts and collars is strongly recommended. 5. Do not perform squatting type movements or Olympic lifts outside the power racks. 6. When performing maximal free weight exercises utilize a spotter or staff member. 7. Please report any facility related injuries or equipment irregularities to the Rec Staff on duty. 8. Appropriate attire must be worn at all times. 9. Clean equipment with a facility wipe after use. 10. Return dumbbells and plates to the rack in their proper order. 11. Do not drop plates or dumbbells. 12. Do not throw medicine balls. 13. Do not move equipment, machines, or benches. 14. Dumbbells, weight plates, and bars should not be dropped, leaned, or propped against the walls, mirrors, and/or other equipment. Group Fitness Studios Rules 1. Participation in drop-in fitness classes is limited to members only. 2. There is a maximum capacity of 50 participants in the dance studio, and 10 participants in the fitness studio. 3. No one will be allowed into a class after 10 minutes. 4. All belongings must be stored in a locker. 5. Participants must have a hand stamp (dance studio), or get a fitness pass (fitness studio) from the Information Center before participating in drop-in fitness classes. 6. Fitness passes are distributed on a first come first serve basis, and are given out no earlier than half an hour before the scheduled class begins. 7. Do not drop dumbbells or barbells. 8. Return equipment after use. 9. Always wipe down bikes, equipment, and mats after class with disinfectant wipes. 10. Patrons must wait to enter the studio until the previous class has ended. 11. Usage is by reservation ONLY. Cardio Center Rules 1. Users must be 14 years of age or older.

2. If you have questions or are unfamiliar with the equipment, please ask Rec Center staff for assistance. 3. Television stations and volume are monitored by Rec Center Staff ONLY; this will be done every half hour. 4. There is a 30 minute time limit on cardio equipment. 5. Please report any facility related injuries or equipment irregularities to the Rec Staff on duty. 6. Appropriate attire must be worn at all times. 7. Clean equipment with a facility wipe after use. 8. Do NOT move cardio machines, benches, fans, or equipment. 9. Participants must face forward while using cardio equipment. 10. The use of weights on the cardio machines is strictly prohibited. Gym and Court Rules 1. Since all games are self-monitored, good sportsmanship and proper conduct are expected. 2. BLACK SOLED SHOES and other marking shoes are not permitted on the playing floor. 3. Closed toed shoes must be worn at all times 4. Grabbing or hanging on the net or rim is prohibited. Violators will be asked to leave the building. 5. Soccer, tennis, baseball, softball, and the use of frisbees are limited to use only in the Dome or in some cases a racquetball court. 6. Some scheduled activities in the gymnasium may take priority over open recreation. 7. Personal belongings must be stored in lockers. 8. Emergency exits are for emergency usage ONLY. Anyone caught sneaking another individual into the facility will be immediately removed from the facility. The individual(s) will not be allowed back into the facility without first speaking with Rec Sports full time staff. 9. Patrons who violate any gym rule will be asked to leave. 10. Overflow gym space will be available to members at the discretion of Rec Sports Staff. Pool Area and Lap Pool Rules 1. Hand stamps and showers are required before patrons may utilize the pool. 2. Swimming is allowed only when a Rec Sports lifeguard is on duty. 3. An adult (18 or older) must accompany any non-member child under the age of 14. 4. Children age 5 or under must have an adult (18 or older) with them in the water at all times. 5. Lifeguards have the discretionary authority to require a parent or guardian to be in the water with a child over 5 years of age whom they judge to be a weak swimmer. 6. Swimsuits are required. Cut-off shorts, pants, shoes, or t-shirts are prohibited swim attire. 7. Lap swimmers may be required to circle swim when lane use exceeds two patrons.

8. The pool may be closed or have restricted use due to competitive events, special events, programs, or rentals. 9. Life jackets are available for use in both the diving well and lap pool. Personal flotation devices must be approved by lifeguards before use. 10. Running, rough play, intoxication, public displays of affection, and profanity are prohibited. 11. Glass containers and food are not permitted in the pool area. 12. Hanging on lane lines and the use of starting blocks is prohibited. 13. Only towels, deck footwear, and items necessary for swimming are allowed on deck. All other personal belongings must be stored in a locker. 14. Rec Sports Lifeguards have the discretionary authority to revoke swimming privileges and/or close the pool when deemed necessary. 15. Three whistle blasts may signal an emergency. Exit the pool immediately and look to the lifeguard for further instruction. Pool Area Health Rules 1. Individuals with open wounds or infectious diseases or conditions are prohibited from using the pool or diving well. 2. Casts may not be worn in the pool. 3. Swim diapers are required for all children not toilet trained. Diapers should be changed in locker rooms or bathrooms, not on the pool deck. 4. Do not swim when you have diarrhea or other flu-like symptoms. Diving Well Rules 1. A 50 yard swim test is required for those under age 14 before diving well may be used. 2. One bounce is allowed on the diving board. 3. All dives from diving boards must be forward dives or flips. Diving from the wall must be done facing forward. 4. Adjustment of diving board fulcrum and use of the platform is prohibited. 5. Diving boards open daily at 1pm. 6. Swimming, treading water, or diving under the diving boards is prohibited. 7. Rings, bricks, and toys are prohibited. 8. Patrons in life jackets may only use the 1m diving board. 9. Diving or jumping deemed unsafe, in the judgment of the lifeguard, will be prohibited. Sauna Rules 1. Sauna use is limited to Rec Members ONLY! 2. Long exposure to sauna temperatures may result in nausea, dizziness, and fainting. 3. Members should not exceed 20 minutes in the sauna. 4. Consult your physician before using the sauna.

5. Members must use a towel or cloth barrier between their skin and the sauna bench. 6. Members must shower before they use the sauna. 7. The sauna is a dry sauna; do not throw copious amounts of water onto rocks. 8. Disorderly or inappropriate conduct within the sauna will not be tolerated and will result in removal from the facility. Intramurals 1. Participants must be at least 16 years of age and have a current recreation membership. Day pass/punch pass users are not eligible to participate. 2. Participants must have their membership card with them and check in at the Info Center before game time. They will need a hand stamp in order to participate. 3. Any player using an assumed name on the score sheet shall be barred from all intramural competition for the rest of the semester. The team for which they were playing will be dropped from further competition in that sport. 4. Good sportsmanship and proper conduct amongst players and teams are expected. Climbing and Bouldering Wall 1. May not be used unless open. 2. All climbers (both youth and adult) must have a signed liability waiver on file, before the wall(s) may be used. 3. An adult (18 or older) must accompany any non-member child, 14 years of age or younger. Waivers for youth under age 18 must be signed by a legal parent/guardian before wall use. 4. Climbers must sign in at the ORC desk before climbing or bouldering. 5. All climbers must be supported by an NMU certified belayer. 6. Always use proper belay and climbing commands. 7. The adjustment or rearrangement of hand holds is not permitted. 8. Spotters and/or crash pads are required if bouldering is performed. 9. Harnesses must be double backed at the waist and at the leg loop buckles when being used by climbers and belayers. 10. Always check and double check knots, harnesses, belay system, and check to see that slack is taken out before the climb begins. 11. ORC staff reserves the right to revoke climbing wall privileges to anyone who refuses to follow policies or climbs/belays in a manner that endangers themselves or others. 12. Only climbers are allowed into the climbing wall area. Non-climbers must stand or sit outside of the crash pad area. 13. The use of loose chalk is not permitted. Locker Rooms 1. The use of locker rooms for showering, locker storage, and sauna is limited to Rec Members ONLY.

2. Locker rentals are available by semester or annually through the Rec Sports Main Office. 3. Northern Michigan University is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged personal property. 4. Children ages 5 and older may not enter the opposite gender locker room. Please respect the rights and privacy of others. If you have questions regarding this, please see Rec Sports staff. 5. Please report suspicious behavior to the Rec Sports Staff. Daily Use Lockers 1. Members have the option of using day use lockers with a lock from the Information Center or a personal lock. 2. Locks left on day use lockers will be removed nightly. 3. Items removed from day use lockers will be kept in lost and found for 30 days. 4. Contents of lockers that are rented by semester or annually will be kept for 3 months after the locker rental expires. Photography and Video Policy 1. Individuals wishing to take pictures or use a video tape recorder in the Rec Center or rec areas must be approved in advance by Rec Sports full time staff. Posting Policy 1. Posting is allowed in specified areas of the PEIF building, and items will only be posted by a member of the Rec Sports staff. 2. Rec Sports reserves the right to limit the total number of postings for each event. 3. Postings must be stamped by the NMU center for student enrichment before posting within the PEIF building Lost and Found 1. Rec Sports is not responsible for lost or stolen articles. 2. Members are encouraged to store all personal belongings in locked lockers. 3. Rec Sports staff are not permitted to hold valuables, bags, or identification cards for members. 4. Found items and equipment will be sent to the Information Center daily. Items will only be kept for 30 days and then given to a local charity or NMU Public Safety. 5. Patrons are highly encouraged to leave all valuables at home.

Patron and Member Responsibilities As a Rec Sports Member, patrons have the responsibility to: 1. Read, understand, and abide by all policies and regulations of the Rec Center and programming areas 2. Respond to and cooperate with Rec Sports staff members 3. Be considerate to other patrons and Rec Sports staff members and respect their individual rights 4. Take responsibility for personal and community security. For example, patrons should not misuse safety equipment, prop open doors, allow individuals without valid passes into the Rec Areas, etc 5. Recognize that recreation facilities and their furnishings are used by everyone and that abuse of those areas violates the rights of others 6. Secure all personal property in lockers and do not bring valuables which could be lost or stolen
