FOR MORE INFO REFER TO THE ATTACHMENT WELL DONE LETTER TO BEARS PSSA REPS On behalf of the North Canberra PSSA I would like to take the opportunity to thank the North Canberra Bears for their fantastic support of our Rugby League squad - in particular to Glen Aylott, Dale Shields and Chris Adams. These men donated their time and expertise to coaching and advising our team, from selection at trials to coaching on the day of the ACT Rugby League Carnival. That, plus the very generous use of North Canberra Bears jumpers and balls, made our day such a success. Their dedication and obvious love for the game and its future development is a credit to both them and to the Bears. I would especially like to highlight the contribution made by Chris Adams, our coach. Chris was instrumental in shaping our team, taking time to guide and advise individual players and running them through skills training over four very cold sessions in the lead up to Carnival day. His patience and guidance, both at training and on Carnival day, contributed to six of our players being selected for the ACT Rugby League squad, which heads to Melbourne in August. Thanks so much Chris. Thank you again, Bears. The future of Rugby League is safe thanks to clubs like you. regards Rolf Einhaus St Joseph's Primary, O'Connor MESSAGE FROM THE COMMITTEE Hi everyone, I m Back! A MESSAGE FROM YOUR COMMITTEE POSITIONS VACANT - You may have noticed that we currently have two senior positions VACANT for the Bears. I don t want to alarm anyone, but this is not a typing error. First things first - It is with great pride and respect that we thank Mick Bland for his leadership skills and dedication to the North Canberra Bears, not only as Club President but also as a parent of the club for more than 14 consecutive years. Mick announced, in 2010, that it would be his last year as club president and that we should be on the look out for someone new for the 2011 season. Its unfortunate that we havent found anyone. Mick s youngest child is in this years Under 16s with the Bears, and as such he would be more than happy to hold the hand of the new President for the next 12 months, or completely stand aside. Mick has this club organised and has devised a club yearly planner complete with contact names and numbers. The transition will be smooth. So we are seeking someone organised, energetic and with leadership skills who wants to get in there and maintain this club as Canberra s best! The North Canberra Bears is the longest standing club in Canberra, first established in 1963. No previous experience is necessary and I urge you to attend our next committee meeting on the 23 rd or have a chat to any of the committee members if you are interested. So, if President is not your scene, but you want to be inolved, and are keen to help out, then perhaps the VP (Vice President) position is for you. Of all the positions on the committee, this would probably be the most cushey! You work in unison with the President. Rodney Chandler has being doing it in the past. Mr Golden Tongs! Rodney has also dedicated over 4 years to the North Canberra Bears, and, truth be told, this man loves this club and loves junior footy. He lead the team as VP in 2010, he was first on the oval setting up on game day and he didn t even have a kid in the Bears for the 2010 season! Although Rod is no man we can replace, the VP position is vacant, and its someone who loves this club and loves junior footy that we want to fill this role! SO IF YOU LOVE THE NORTH CANBERRA BEARS AND YOU LOVE JUNIOR FOOTY THEN WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! If you always wanted to manage your own empire we have two positions vacant right now. You will be well supported by the rest of the committee. We need to fill these very important roles, and remember, being a member of the committee is NOT A LIFE TIME COMMITMENT, 2 years is all we ask. HOUSEKEEPING DO WE HAVE YOUR CONTACT DETAILS? If you are not receiving SMS s or emails from your coach it could mean many things... above all, it could mean your coach doesn t have your details. ENSURE YOUR COACH HAS YOUR CONTACT DETAILS & THAT YOUR CONTACT DETAILS ARE CORRECT. Team Photo Day is coming up and it s YOUR RESPONSIBLITY to ensure that your manager has the correct spelling/name of your child. If there is an incident, on or off the field, and you can t/don t want to approach your coach/manager, please do call or email a member of the committee. Together we can tackle the problem. Merchandise: the Bears have tracksuits, polar fleece jumpers, hoodies and polo shirts for sale contact Justin Boxy Box or Mick Blando Bland - details on page 2. SPORTS CLUB 5

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR TEAM UNDEER 66' 'ss ROUND 4 VS BUNGENDORE 20-8W What a beautiful day for footy, almost felt like summer compared to last week. Another road trip saw us venture back into NSW to take on the Tigers. Again we were able to come home with the points. It is amazing with each week that passes I see improvements in every single player. I would like to take them time to welcome Logan our new recruit, who played his first game this weekend, and showed a lot of promise in his first hit out. I would also like to wish Thomas a speedy recovery from his broken arm (not suffered from footy). You will be missed, but we hope you can make a return before the end of the season. For the third week in a row we have scored 5 or more tries. This week our try scorers were Connor with two, Matty, Mac and Brodie well done boys, keep up the good work. One thing we must remember is to get back into our defensive line as quick as possible, and make sure we are ready to tackle, as this is what let us down this week. But that s ok; it will give us something to work on for our match against the Bulls next week. I have been very impressed with our tackles lately, and I know how much the kids are working hard on them. I would like to congratulate Hayden for some really good tackles, being smaller than most of his opponents Hayden showed a lot of guts to step up and tackle kids that were significantly bigger than him well done. I am continually amazed how well we are getting our offensive set up, and how quickly we are playing the ball. Gomez especially is doing a wonderful job at helping getting everyone organised. I am very impressed with our running. Everyone now is running straight and hard, keeping those legs pumping. Good work to Blake and Mia who have really improved recently with their runs. As always Tyreece made many metres for us, and was unlucky to be caught before scoring a try on the buzzer. Congratulations to all the kids, you are all doing an amazing job. I look forward to every weekend getting to train you and watch you develop every week. Keep up the good work. TRAINING Saturday 3pm @ Ashburton Ova Well done Bears Caz 0466 826 135 UNDEER 77' 'ss ROUND 4 VS QBN BLUES Thanks Ross Clarke 0412 358 087 UNDEER 88' 'ss ROUND 4 VS WEST BELCONNEN WARRIORS Wow, wow, wow. What an effort and what an improvement. You do have your listening ears. The U8 s went to West Belconnen to play and this time there was no ice on the field. The boys warmed up well and were keen to get on the field to play. From the opening whistle the boys defence was very encouraging, the wall defence was 6

awesome and we were nicely spread out. As soon it was time to move up, the boys tackled in threes and fours. Great to see. The only times that we were vulnerable was out wide, but again our scramble defence made sure the Warriors earned their points. The first two thirds of the game we scored three times and in the last third we scored four times. The goal kicking was on song with only one kick that was not converted. Overall it was a great performance by the whole TEAM. Don t be surprised to get a call from Ricky Stuart for game 2. Continue to put in the hard work both at training and in the game and you never know, you just might get that call. Congratulations to one of our tackling machines Aiden who received the Player of the Week trophy, well done and well done to you all. It was a great win and the first for the year. Don t forget that we also have training on Thursday nights from 5.45 to 6.30. TRAINING: Saturday afternoons between 2pm and 3pm & Thurs from 530-645pm at Diamantina GO BEARS! Coach Kel 0417 203 968 UNDEER 99' 'ss ROUND 4 VS QBN BLUES TRAINING: Diamantina at 6pm 7pm on Wed and Thurs Well Done & THANK YOU! Peter Foley 0430 608 027 UNDEER 1100 ss ROUND 4 VS CROOKWELL 38-4W TRIES: Jarrod Walt x2 Ryan Robbie x2 Tom CONVERSIONS: Jake s Charlie B Charles K Walt Tom Great result on a great weekend, what an awesome day, well done to everyone! We played as a team, supported each other with tackling and stayed away from the sideline and what a difference that made this week. Everyone on the field this week impressed us with two in a tackle and getting the ball out wide. It was great to see the boys looking down the line and shifting the ball out to where we could do the most with it. It was also great to see everyone sharing the ball and spreading out in your lines. Points to improve on for next game are to talk to each other more during the game and back each other up when in attack. Player of the match this week was Robbie it was very hard to decide as everyone played so well, well done Robbie. Thanks again to all our parents for their support and positive/encouraging words to our boys throughout their games. Our result confirms that we get the best out of our kids when we provide a positive environment to play in. That s all till next week, TRAINING Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5pm to 6pm both days GO THE BEARS! Clyde Morton 6242 6432 7

UNDEER 1111 ss REED ROUND 4 VS VALLEY DRAGONS 16-24L Tries: Harley Smith Shields x3 Goals: Josh Iyves Zarn Forner EFFORT!!! Well done team for the tremendous effort and heart shown in last weeks game. Unfortunately we were unable to get the win, but given the turn around in form to take it to the top of the table team (Undefeated), really shows how hard we have all been working at training. Brilliant first half which we led 16-12 and showed how solid we are in defence when we work together. Unlucky in the second half where we had a few injuries and let in a couple of late tries to go down 24-16. All in all though, a courageous and selfless performance from all involved. Bodies on the line with everyone playing on despite the vast amount of injuries! We can turn our season around in no time if we keep this type of effort up. A few wins are only around the corner!! TRAINING Tuesday & Thursday 5.45pm 7pm Diamantina Ovals Go the Bears!!! Ben Cullen 0401 151 785 UNDEER 1111 ss BLLACCK ROUND 4 VS SHARKS 16-38L TRIES: Dante Sam Mark CONVERSIONS: Lucas Sam I have say that Ashburton Ovals is Canberra s best kept secret! The oval is lush and green and soft, they are well looked after and marked for each division. The side lines and try lines we played on today were a guessing game. No one felt it more than Sam; from kick off the ball landed straight in his arms - and he was away running along the side line, eventually the touchy called it that he had ran over the side line. He wasnt out (even the Sharks first aider said so). It was an unlucky call, Sam, but we copped it sweet and set our defensive line. FEVRE CARPET LAYING 0412 487 988 It wasnt long before we had possession of the ball again and our team of forwards muscled us towards the try line. Dante had a super game today he really stepped up in attack making yards on the field, he had the most runs for the game. It was Dante who fell across the line for the first points of the game, nice work buddy! A mention needs to go to Ethan - I cant begin to say how impressed I was with Ethan this week! He is set in the Centre position, and you could hear him telling the line to move into the mid-field and fill in the gaps, Ethan was Super-Ethan this week, filling in the gaps and his smack-down tackles were supurb! Great game today matey! Zeke s long legs stepped over 6 defenders as he lept his way to the try line from the half way mark. He could have scored the try himself but he popped the ball to his left to Mark who had supported Zeke all the way. Mark scored the next 4 points for the Bears and it was Lucas who succesfully converted. This display of football is what you see the first graders do! Outstanding effort boys! Outstanding! I love that our boys never give up! It s a credit to our team. Will had a super run and ran like he d been playing football for years stepping through the defence, never giving up and his tackles are great too! And how s this for magic play - Sam booted off the right foot on the 8

5 th and last tackle on the half way line, Jack had his eyes on the ball chasing it all the way; he caught the ball and then passed back to Sam who scored the final points for the Bears. Great display of team-work from our attacking team this week! Running and passing the ball! I love it when a plan comes together! Sam, you are the teams highest points scorer. =) The Sharkies were a tough team to play against, and without dwelling on poor decisions from the ref we have no one to blame but ourselves for the Sharks being able to run through our defensive line and make a run for it putting points on the board. Tennis balls, this week boys, bring them to training. One boy who doesn t need the tennis balls is Chookie! MATE! You know it s a close competition when the tackle count is low there were only 60 tackles for the whole game this week Chookie, Buddy, you did 11 of them! You are this weeks tackle machine! The girls had a point to prove today after last week s game and I must say I was impressed by their effort against the Buffs. The game was safely in our control for the entire match as the Buffs struggled with their handling and had trouble making much ground against our Bears defence. The Buffaloes continually had players going down injured and we would have lost at least 10 minutes of play in each half due to 1 st aiders treating wounded buffaloes. That s not a dig at the Buffaloes; they have been doing it tough due to injuries of late and struggled with some of our big defence and hard running forwards in this game. We 9

played a lot smarter this week with most of our tries awarded to our backs after the hard yards were made by our forwards, compressing the defensive line of the opposition and creating space out wide. We shuffled a few positions around today to test the girls out and they all took it in their stride and put in a great performance. Having said that each player needs to focus on their position, do the best they can and not worry about whoever else is playing in what position. A few Specials this week: Our much improved ball security, about half the handovers from last week!!keep up the good work girls. Bec Casey again showing the way, a real tackling machine and pretty slick in attack as well. Ash L crossing for 4 tries and playing on the wing, testament to her hard running and the good use of our backline. Thanks to Leon for doing the 1 st aid, Sean for running the water and Kim for filling in as Manager, much appreciated. Special welcome and thank you to Glenys and Sid for stepping up as Coaches for our Bears Girls. PS team photos Saturday June 4 th Sports Club Kaleen be there 3.40pm for a 4.00pm shoot!
