SUPPORT THE RIDE In 2011 we raised 5,500; in 2012 our target is 10,000 for charity By riding in and sponsoring the 3rd Bucket & Spade Ride which takes place on Saturday 23rd June 2012 you will benefit a number of important charities and community projects. The Bucket & Spade Cycle 2012 will link two of England s classic seaside resorts: Southport - Blackpool. The Ride will be supported with foodstops and mechanical provision. The Ride is for amateurs and enthusiasts alike. All riders will cycle in one peloton. Cyclists will ride a minimum of 40miles to Blackpool, with the option of the return leg to Southport to complete the 75-miler (120km). This is a fantastic opportunity to make a significant contribution to local, national and international charities through donations, riding or event sponsorship. Simply Southport magazine will partner with the Ride and feature coverage of this fundraising event. Riders may raise sponsorship for a charity of their choice. In addition, the Ride supports 3 nominated charities: Shoreline Church is a LOCAL community church working in Southport with a team of volunteers to assist disadvantaged children and adults via youth projects, soup kitchens, life skills initiatives, counselling and activity programmes. www.shorelinechurch.org.uk Green Pastures Housing is a NATIONAL not-for-profit charity providing sustainable housing and care for homeless people. GP partners with over 25 organisations to provide long-term accommodation for hundreds of people. www.greenpastures.net Tearfund is an INTERNATIONAL charity which provides humanitarian aid, development support and disaster response to crisis areas across the world. www.tearfund.org

THE ROUTE THE ORIGINAL RIDE The ride will take place over one day. The course is split into 6 stages with intermittent WC/ foodstops. Cyclists will start and finish in Southport, with an optional halfway finish at Blackpool. The distance is 37 miles one-way or 75 miles return (route reversed). BLACKPOOL FINISH 1 THE OLYMPIC CHALLENGE To celebrate the 2012 Olympics we are offering a select group of riders a breakaway challenge via the notorious/ glorious Parbold Hill. Riders will depart at the same time as the main bunch, split early and then chase down the peloton to rejoin before Lytham. Stage 1 (&6): Southport - Preston Stage 2 (&5): Preston - Lytham Stage 3 (&4): Lytham - Blackpool STAGE 3,4 STAGE 2,5 PRESTON LYTHAM STAGE 1,6 START SOUTHPORT FINISH 2

HOW THE RIDE WORKS WE ARE CYCLING 120KM (75MILES) FROM SOUTHPORT TO BLACKPOOL RETURN TO RAISE MONEY FOR CHARITY. Please read the information below as a guide to help you prepare for the Ride. Please contact us if you have any queries: e. cycle@bucketandspade.com START: Meet at 6.45am @ Shoreline Church, 9 Mornington Road, Southport, PR9 0TS. Parking available on forecourt. 1) Come changed and ready to ride... 2) you will sign-in... 3) load your day-bag onto a support vehicle (see kit list for details)... 4) pick up an event t-shirt... 5) enjoy a free breakfast... 6) listen to a briefing from Ride organisers... 7) Grand Depart 7.15am FINISH: We expect to return to Southport at approx. 5pm HOW THE RIDE WORKS The ride is 75miles (120km) in total, over 1 day on SAT 23rd JUNE 2012 There are two finishes - one at halfway in Blackpool; one in Southport after the full distance. Riders should decide which finish they will aim for. The day is split into 6 legs of approx 12miles each, assuming an average speed of approx. 12mph. It is not a race. The aim is to ride in pairs, in a single peloton (bunch ride). RIDE SCHEDULE - Breakfast and set-off - Stage 1: 12miles 1hr 15min break Stage 2: 12miles 1hr 15min break Stage 3: 12miles 1hr - Arrive at Blackpool at approx. 12pm (FINISH 1) 30min - Stage 3: 8miles 45mins - 1hr lunch break at Lytham - Stage 4: 12miles 1hr 15min break Stage 5: 12miles 1hr 15min break Stage 6: 8miles 45mins - Arrive at Southport around 5pm (FINISH 2) - SUPPORT VEHICLES Support vehicles will follow the peloton and will carry water, food, basic first aid, mobile phone, maps. Two vans will operate as broom wagons sweeping up riders (and their bikes) who cannot continue for whatever reason. RIDER PROTOCOL 1. Support the Ride in general through the mantra: ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR ALL. 2. Follow the instructions of the Ride leaders as this will ensure the smooth running of the whole event. 3. Ride leaders are: David Head, Mario Aigner & Simon Rigby. 4. Communicate with Ride leaders if you have any problems. 5. Ensure that you are all present and correct after intermediate rest-stops. 6. We ride as one group/ peloton for the social aspect and for safety. Do not break away from the peloton unless agreed with Ride leaders. 7. Stronger riders should take a turn at the front of the peloton (to take the wind); the Ride leaders will generally direct this and the pace. 8. Use signals to inform people behind you of what is happening. ie: moving out due to obstruction/ parked car or slowing down etc. If it s an emergency SHOUT! 9. Buddy up ride two abreast in clean lines to save energy. 10. The Bucket and Spade Ride is not a race! No break-away groups unless Ride leaders agree to split the peloton. FULL OR HALF DISTANCE? As organisers we will try and accommodate everyone. If at any point in the ride if you feel tired/ unwell/ or get a puncture a van will pick up yourself (and your bike) so you won t be left stranded. If this occurs on the outward leg, you will sit in the support vehicle until the next rest stop, or until riders reach the halfway lunch stop. At lunch you will have a chance to rest/ see how your legs feel and decide at this point if you wish to opt out of the return leg/ make your way home. You may be able to share a lift with other riders who only ride halfdistance. If you do not have space for your bike, your bike will remain on the bike bus until the end of the ride and will be stored at Shoreline Church at your risk. You must make arrangements for bike storage and collection with the support crew. If you decide to commit to the return leg but then need to stop, again you (and your bike) will be picked up but (as per the outward leg) you will have to sit in the support vehicle until all riders reach the finish back in Southport.

T-shirts tend to absorb and hold sweat so you may wish to bring a spare to change at half-time lunch-stop etc. Remember that our total riding time will be approx. 6hrs which is a long time even on a warm sunny day and your body temperature will naturally drop at the various stops so it is important to snack and drink regularly to maintain your temperature.
