The most innovative bike hire scheme in the UK

What is Brompton Dock? Brompton Dock is a secure hire, return and storage facility that has been developed specifically and uniquely for the Brompton folding bicycle. Brompton Dock works with partners to make Brompton folding bicycles accessible to members Partners are local authorities and public or private companies that host a dock on their premises Members are end-users who pay a yearly membership fee to use the dock Brompton Dock offers different tariffs to suit individual requirements

Brompton Dock is smart & fully automated A member s Brompton Dock experience: Register online, choose type of membership and tariff Enter name, mobile number, email address and unique PIN number Enter credit card details and pay the appropriate fee To hire a bike, send a TEXT containing dock number and PIN to the dock The dock will send an access code Punch the access code into keypad and take bike out from allocated bay Hire period starts as soon as the door is shut Keep the bike as long as you want Repeat the TEXT process to return the bike Your credit card is automatically debited for the hire charges Our partner does not have to be involved at all in this process.

Brompton Dock is flexible Flexible for our member: 24/7 access to a Brompton Keep the bike for as long as needed, from 24 hours to 6 months or more Brompton bikes provide extra flexibility as they can be folded and carried anywhere, including public transport Flexible for our partner: Partner only has to provide a location Brompton Dock provides complete package of membership management, bike servicing and dock maintenance Docks use solar power, no connection to mains needed = easy, low-cost installation Docks can be moved to the areas of high demand, no fixing to ground necessary

Brompton Dock s pilot scheme South West Trains were keen to expand Brompton bike hire with an automated system. Therefore, pilot scheme was launched on 30 July 2011 at Guildford Railway Station. Aims: To test security, flexibility, sustainability and reliability of the system To measure uptake from users and revenues To learn from market research and user feedback To establish the standard operating factors, maximizing number of bikes supported by 40-bay dock What we learned: Ongoing promotion to recruit new members is necessary Flexible membership tariffs are needed to encourage more members How to overcome technical problems associated with a hostile location Basic 40-bay dock can be installed and operational within hours

Partnership with Brompton Dock Why is Brompton Dock attractive for partners? Infrastructure costs 1,500 per bike (London Cycle Hire Scheme costs 25,000 per bike) Cash-generative and self-funding a percentage of revenue from membership and hire fees is returned to partner 1 car-parking space = 40 bays which can support 80 (or more) bikes = high revenue per square metre Encourages integrated travel plans = more revenue for train operators Reduces traffic lowering carbon foot print and congestion linked to the site Low-cost employee/client benefit healthy, on-demand transport Car parking demand reduced and space released/lease costs cut Contributes to delivery of Travel Plan targets, avoiding penalties and costs Creates modal shift onto cycling

1 car park space = 1 car = 5 people max. OR 1 car park space = 40-bay Brompton Dock = 40 bikes (even more!*) * More than 40 bikes can be associated with a dock if the bikes are on hire for longer terms.

Partnership with Brompton Dock Our prospective partners include... Local authorities in the UK: For LSTF delivery, London Borough s Cycling Fund and other Travel Plan initiatives. Transport Operators: Meeting the demand for integrating cycling with bus, tram and rail services; generating an income from the enhanced service and resolving space and crime issues with the conventional cycle parking. Universities & NHS Campus Sites: Alternative to costly intensive provision of shuttle buses and reserved parking spaces for internal/inter-site journeys. Low-cost incentive offered to staff and students when car parking capacity is restricted. Business parks & private companies: An added value service for tenants, providing independent and flexible access to local town centres, railway stations etc. Overseas enquiries: Brompton Bicycle s international reputation and uniqueness of Brompton Dock generated a lot of interest from overseas.

Brompton Dock membership Why is it attractive for members? Provides end-to-end journey solution Immune to most traffic congestion Consistent and predictable journey times Save time with immediate onward travel - no waiting for a bus, train or taxi No time lost seeking parking place and walking back Cycling is 4 times faster than walking Healthier and more active life style Save money by reducing the costs of petrol and parking

Brompton Dock membership 100% of our members say that they would recommend Brompton Dock to their friends* It makes a Brompton affordable. Please open a Dock in Edinburgh, then Glasgow! The system is easy to use and the cycles are reliable and of good quality. I hope that the pilot scheme extends to other railway stations/locations as it would be helpful to return the bike to a location near to my residence should I require to do so. * Result and quotes from our member survey
