October 2004 The Meeting September 21 st 2004 Our next meeting is Tuesday, October 19 th at 7:30 There were 11 new members this month. The President canceled the gun show for September. The vendors have been notified and their deposits refunded. Advertising was non-existent and a lot of tables were still not sold due to communications difficulties. We lost about $8000 in potential revenue and a lot of good will with the vendors. Billy Stalcup and his dad will take over the next gun show in February. They have experience in gun shows since they are vendors themselves. We look forward to working with them. Dave Brooks spoke about the shotgun banquet for the end of the summer league. The shotgun he was raffling off was won by Dr. Thompson s ticket. Dr. Thompson had bought 29 tickets for the raffle and given away 28 of them. The one he had left was the winning ticket but he had traded it just minutes before to another gentleman. Everybody had a good time. The next league will start Monday September 28 th. Saturday schedule will be 8 11 Practice only with league starting at 11 am. Monday and Thursday evening starting at 5 pm. Someone shot up the shotgun range last week (September 12 or 13) with what we believe was a hand gun. If anyone saw or heard pistol shooting down at the west end of the range either late Sunday or early Monday please speak up or call Crime Stoppers. There will be no questions asked. We have got to protect our range. It s our range. Don t approach the people, just take down the license plate number of their vehicle and call someone on the back of the newsletter or range schedule. There will be a registered trap shoot October 16 & 17. The shotgun range will be closed on Sundays now. Steve Brooks reported on the raffle ticket sales and the county fair. He thanked everyone who volunteered at the booth. He was a little tweaked about the fact that he sent out $7000 worth of tickets and there are still $6000 worth of tickets still out. Please bring either the tickets or the money to the meeting in October. If you can t support this club, you don t need to be here. So far he has only sold or received $2643 out of a possible $10,000. We had no gun show this September which means no income so we have to sell these tickets! Someone sent in a book of tickets and the money for them and asked that the tickets be given to some one deserving. Steve is working on that. Friends of the NRA is having a raffle too. It s for a Browning gun safe with a 25

gun capacity. If you would like to buy some tickets, you can pick them up at East Main Trade. They re $20 each. Buy 5 and you will get 1 free. There will be only 750 tickets sold. Wink Mathers donated the safe. Mike Reitz talked about the Shootout at Three Rivers. They had 70 shooters and 118 people attend the banquet. Cowboy Action turned in $1180 to the club from the event which makes nearly $1800 so far this year. Saturday coming up they will have a long range match and their regular shoots will be held on Sundays from now on. For more information, check out their website at www.sassnet.com and click on our area. Wayland Moore announced again that he will be having a Match Directors meeting November 15 th at 7 pm up here at the clubhouse. There will be some match directors retiring this year..22 Benchrest, Cowboy Rifle/ Pistol Silhouette and Indoor Bullseye will definitely need directors or there won t be any of those matches held next year. The rewards are that you shoot for free, get a little irritation and it s gratifying. Wayland also spoke about the fact that vandalism is out of control up here. As was mentioned before, the shotgun range was shot up. We have a fingerprint this time and the sheriff s office was called out. The Canyon outhouses have been shot up with shotguns. Someone shot up 8 of the steel silhouettes with a.223 high powered rifle last month. The fence has to be fixed weekly! There is a $250 reward offered by the club for information on any vandalism you see. The club will prosecute. This place was built with hard work and donations. A motion was made to redirect the $6500, originally designated to finish the expansion on the existing storage building, to the purchase of several new carports for storage use instead. The $6500 that had been approved to finish the storage building will instead buy several carports that will be closed in and used for storage. They will be placed on the first level in the canyon for the IPSC, IDPA, and Cowboy Action activities. This way there will be plenty of storage close to their shooting areas. The board feels that this is a better use of the money already approved for storage. They will have steel sides, with a road base floor and anchored with long steel stakes. By not using concrete floors, we won t have to pay tax on a permanent building. The structures will be 18 x 20 at least and we will be able to get 3 or maybe 4 of them. Dave Brooks said that he might have a garage door he can donate to close the buildings in and Ken Kempa donated 2 garage doors. The garage doors are needed because of the equipment trailers that are used and stored during each match. The motion passed. The Outdoor Range Officer Bond Kinney announced that he will be fixing the fence this Thursday. If you can help, please sign up after the meeting.

Ken Kempa (our new secretary) announced that he would be giving a slide show on his Zimbabwe, Africa hunt last year. It will be held Friday October 1 st at East Main Trade. Ken Kempa is a U.S. correspondent for Caliber Magazine in Europe, a technical advisor for Stey Mannlicher, as well as being on the advisory staff for Barnes Bullets. If you would like to try out any of Stey Mannlicher s rifles, contact Ken. There will be a gun show in Aztec October 13 & 14 at the Civic Center. This one is sponsored by the Lions Club. Karen Stalcup spoke about the 4H shooting sports. Any child age 9 19 can participate in the 4H shooting sports. Kids ages 9 12 can shoot pellet or archery. Kids ages 13 19 can shoot shotgun, muzzle load,.22 rifle or pistol and archery. If you know of any kids that might be interested, call the county extension agent for more information. 4H had 22 kids sign up at the Youth Sports Fest. Dave Brooks wanted to remind everyone about the Junior NRA club. If you know of any Juniors who are already members call Dave so he can list them on our rolls. If you have any one interested in joining the Junior NRA, call him for more information. ANNOUNCEMENTS The deadline for the October newsletter is November 8 th. You can reach me at 564-3651, or email me at ptnopt@fisi.net. If I m not home, I have an answering machine and I read my email every day (almost). Hunter Education Instructors needed!! Game and Fish Ranger Kathy McKim came to the board meeting this month and informed us that there are currently no Hunter Safety Instructors active with memberships or connections to the San Juan Wildlife Federation. The San Juan Wildlife Federation has been involved in Hunter Safety for years. Part of our Wildlife Pledge is to promote education and safety. We need to fill that void. Kathy is willing to hold the two day class for Hunter Safety Instructors if we can get 6 people together. Please call Kathy McKim at 632-0485. Vandalism hits really hard this time. Someone shot up the shotgun range last week (September 12 or 13) with what we believe was a.40 cal. They even put 2 rounds through the kids tip can. If anyone saw or heard shooting down at the west end of the range either late Sunday or early Monday please speak up or call Crime Stoppers. There will be no questions asked and there is a $250 reward offered for information on any vandalism. We have got to protect our range. It s our range. Don t approach

the people, just take down the license plate number of their vehicle and call someone on the back of the newsletter or range schedule. Raffle The Raffle will be held at this October meeting. If you still need tickets, see Steve Brooks at East Main Trade or at the meeting this month. If you wrote your name on the back of the tickets you sold, the person who sold the most tickets will get their dues paid for the next year. Steve promised not to use the tickets he sold at the fair as part of this competition. Cost is $2 each, 3 for $5, and a book is $15. Match Directors Meeting Executive Officer Wayland Moore is planning to have a Match Directors meeting November 15 th. If you want your discipline to have scheduled matches at the San Juan Wildlife Federation range next year then someone from your discipline will have to be there to reserve your times. That s November 15 th at 7:00pm. This is a must do meeting. New Mexico Shooting Sports Association Membership Challenge NMSSA has a membership drive going on till the end of December. The club that signs up the most new members with NMSSA will get a rifle or hand gun. Only $15 a year. If you are interested, there will be membership applications on the secretary s desk at the meetings. Concealed Carry The Club is still offering classed for $125.
