The Lakers travel to Compton Family Ice Arena to face off with the Irish and former Laker head coach Jeff Jackson. The Irish hold a 24-34-7 all-time series lead over the Lakers. Sinc Jackson joined Notre Dame, the Lakers are 3-18-3 in 24 meetings against the Irish. The Lakers are 0-4 in the past two trips to Compton Family Ice Arena. The Lakers (0-4) are coming off a second consecutive weekend sweep, this time at the hands of Robert Morris. The Lakers were held to a single goal against the much more experienced Colonials who returned nine of their top-10 scorers from last year s national tournament appearance team. The Lakers received their lone goal of the series from senior captain Andrew Dommett (1-0-1). Dommett s goal, a power-play goal, came late in the first frame during game one of the series. Ian Miller (1-1-2) and James Roll (0-1-1) picked up the assists on the goal by Dommett. For the freshman Roll, the assist marked the first point of his Laker career. Dalton Izyck came on to give the Colonials a shutout in game two, saving all 28 shots the Lakers put on net. Freshman Gordon Defiel (0-4-0, 3.88 gaa,.907%) has made all four starts in the Lakers net so far this season. Defiel made 36 saves on 39 shots faced during the first game of the series, including a scoreless second period where he made 20 saves. In the second game he saved all 11 shots he faced during the first period before facing 29 more shots throughout the game, giving up 3 goals in the process. The Lakers were outshot 79-58 during the series. The Lakers started five freshmen on their blue line during the series opener on Friday night. Junior assistant captain Eric Drapluk was the lone upperclassman on the Lakers defense. In game two, fellow junior defenseman Zach Loesch returned to the lineup. Robert Morris went 2-10 on the power play this weekend, while the Lakers converted one goal in seven tries. The Lakers committed 11 penalties for 22 minutes, while the Colonials limited their penalties to eight, serving 16 minutes. Continued on page 3...

Lake Superior State coach Damon Whitten Damon Whitten was named the 10th head coach in the 48-year history of Laker hockey on April 25, 2014. Whitten was an assistant coach at Michigan Tech during the past four seasons and worked under several coaches who are familiar friends and rivals of Lake Superior State. He is a 2001 graduate of Michigan State University, where he played for hall of fame coach Ron Mason. After receiving a bachelor s degree in communication from MSU he earned a master s in sports administration in 2005. While coaching with Mel Pearson at MTU, he helped the Huskies implement a new fore-check, neutral zone defense and zone entries. He was responsible for in-game defensive matchups and academic performance, and assisted with all facets of practice, game preparation and recruiting. During his first season at MTU (2010-11), the Huskies enjoyed their best start since 1972, and in 2011-12 they reached the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Final Five. This season they placed fifth in the WCHA standings. Whitten spent two seasons as the director of hockey operations at MSU and worked under two-time Spencer Penrose national coach of the year Rick Comley. During that time, his responsibilities included video work, budget management, travel coordination, and booster and alumni relations. He was also a graduate assistant coach at MSU in 2003-04. He assisted Dave Shyiak at Alaska Anchorage during the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons and Bill Wilkinson at Wayne State in 2004-05 and 2005-06. While playing at MSU, the Spartans amassed an impressive 122-28-20 record, won three Central Collegiate Hockey Association regular-season titles and three playoff championships, and made two Frozen Four appearances. Whitten was an assistant captain of a senior class that owns the Spartans all-time highest win percentage. During his final season, MSU led the nation in goals-against (1.36) and penalty killing (.911). Whitten, a native of Brighton, Mich., totaled 35-40 75 in 166 games as a left wing at MSU. He was a three-time academic All-Big Ten At Large honoree and two-time NCAA Hockey Humanitarian Award nominee. He played two professional seasons in the ECHL one with Greenville and one with Arkansas. He won a Kelly Cup championship with the Greenville Grrrowl in 2001-02. Whitten and his wife, Angela, have one son, Joseph (2 1/2).
