Charlotte Observer October 22, 2005 Section: Metro, 1B A LESSON IN EXERCISE AND FUN MERRY OAKS ELEMENTARY CELEBRATES WALK TO SCHOOL DAY- STEVE LYTTLE, STAFF WRITER The school bus stopped at the Park Apartments in the predawn darkness Friday, and the driver opened the door, expecting about a dozen students to climb aboard, like they do every other school day. "You can keep going," social worker Anna Smendziuk told the driver. "We're walking today." It was "Walk to School Day" at Merry Oaks Elementary School. Teachers and security officers accompanied the students for safety reasons. For most of the students, it was a 1/2- to 3/4-mile walk to the school east of uptown Charlotte. Merry Oaks' walkers seemed to enjoy themselves. "This is fun," said Jamil Chambers, 8, as he neared the school's front door and was cheered by his principal. "I'd like to do it again."
