ROUTES OF ENTRY: TOXICOLOGICAL PROPERTIES temperature rises with the formation of chlorine. SKIN CONTACT: Corrosive and irritating to the skin and eyes. Symptoms depend on the concentration and duration of exposure and very from mild irritation to severe destruction of tissues. SKIN ABSORPTION: Unknown EYE: Eye contact results in pain, lachrymation, inflammation, swelling of tissue and possible destruction of the eye. INHALATION: The chief health hazard associated with this mixture is the potential for over-exposure to sulfur dioxide (especially if this product is used in an enclosed area or confined space). Exposure to sulfur dioxide gas in low concentrations is irritating to the mucous membranes in the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs (due to the formation of sulfurous acid when it comes in contact with moist tissues or moist air). Over-exposure to sulfur dioxide may also result in dryness and irritation of the nose and throat, choking, coughing and bronchospasm. The symptoms associated with exposure to specific sulfur dioxide concentrations are as follows: 1 ppm (1-6 hour duration) Reversible decrease in lung function 5 ppm (10-30 min duration) Constriction of bronchiole tubes 8 ppm (20 min duration) Reddening of the throat and mild nose and throat irritation 20 ppm For most persons exposed, this level is objectionably irritating 500 ppm At this level, sulfur dioxide is so objectionable, that it is difficult to inhale a single deep breath without irritation INGESTION: Unknown ACUTE OVER EXPOSURE EFFECTS: Exposure to atmospheres contaminated with sulfur dioxide is extremely irritating. Its odor and prompt irritant action provide a warning of exposure to toxic conditions. High concentrations are extremely destructive to tissues of the eyes and skin. Inhalation may have fatal consequences as a result of spasm, inflammation and edema of the larynx and bronchi, chemical pneumonitis and pulmonary edema. Exposure of the eyes to high concentrations may result in ulceration of the conjunctivae and cornea and destruction of all ocular tissues. Contact with the skin causes severe burns. Systemic toxicity due to sulfur dioxide is not known to occur. CHRONIC OVER EXPOSURE EFFECTS: Unknown

EXPOSURE LIMITS: TWA (SO2) = 2 molar ppm; STEL = 5 molar ppm (ACGIH 1995-1996) IRRITANCY OF PRODUCT: See Skin and Eye Contact, above SENSITIZATION TO MATERIAL: known CARCINOGENICITY, REPRODUCTIVE EFFECTS: known TERATOGENICITY, MUTAGENICITY: Sex chromosome loss, Drosophila melanogaster, oral 2000 umol/liter TOXICOLOGICALLY SYNERGISTIC PRODUCTS: known NOTE: NITROGEN HAS NO IRRITATING OR TOXIC EFFECTS PREVENTIVE MEASURES PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: Silicon or Butyl rubber gloves. Safety goggles or glasses, face shield. Safety shoes, safety shower and eyewash "fountain". SPECIFIC ENGINEERING CONTROLS: Hastelloy C and F, aluminum, and stainless steel 304, 316 may be used with sulfur dioxide mixtures. System should be designed to accommodate the pressures involved with the mixture. LEAK AND SPILL PROCEDURES: EVACUATE ALL PERSONNEL FROM AFFECTED AREA. Use appropriate protective equipment. If leak is in user's equipment, be certain to purge piping with an inert gas prior to attempting repairs. If leak is on container or container valve, contact the closest MEGS location. WASTE DISPOSAL: Do not attempt to dispose of waste or unused quantities. Return in the shipping container properly labeled, with any valve outlet plugs or caps secured and valve protection cap in place to MEGS for proper disposal. For emergency disposal, contact the closest MEGS location. HANDLING PROCEDURES AND EQUIPMENT: USE ONLY IN WELL- VENTILATED AREAS. Valve protection caps must remain in place unless container is secured with valve outlet piped to the point of use. Do not drag, slide or roll cylinders. Use a suitable hand truck for cylinder movement. Use a pressure reducing regulator when connecting to lower pressure piping or systems. Do not heat cylinder by any means to increase the discharge rate of product from the cylinder. Use a

check valve or trap in the discharge line to prevent hazardous back flow into the cylinder. Close valve after each use and when empty. STORAGE REQUIREMENTS: Protect cylinders from physical damage. Store in cool, dry, well-ventilated area of non combustible construction away from heavily trafficked areas and emergency exits. Do not allow the temperature where cylinders are stored to exceed 52 C. Cylinders must be stored upright and firmly secured to prevent falling or being knocked over. Full and empty cylinders should be segregated. Use a "first in - first out" inventory system to prevent full cylinders being stored for excessive periods of time. TDG CLASSIFICATION: 2.3 WHMIS CLASSIFICATION: A, D1, E SPECIAL SHIPPING INFORMATION: Always secure cylinders in an upright position before transporting them. NEVER transport cylinders in trunks of vehicles, enclosed vans, truck cabs or in passenger compartments. Transport cylinders secured in open flatbed or in open pick-up type vehicles. FIRST AID MEASURES SPECIFIC FIRST AID PROCEDURES: PROMPT MEDICAL ATTENTION IS MANDATORY IN ALL CASES OF OVEREXPOSURE TO SULFUR DIOXIDE. RESCUE PERSONNEL SHOULD BE EQUIPPED WITH SELF-CONTAINED BREATHING APPARATUS. INHALATION: Conscious persons should be assisted to an uncontaminated area and inhale fresh air. Unconscious persons should be moved to an uncontaminated area, given assisted resuscitation and supplemental oxygen. Keep the victim warm and quiet. Assure that mucous or vomited material does not obstruct the airway by positional drainage. The physician should be informed that the patient has inhaled acidic vapors. EYE CONTACT: If irritation of the eye develops after exposure to this gas mixture, open victim's eyes while under gentle running water. Use sufficient force to open the eyelids. Have victim "role" eyelids. Minimum flushing is for 15 minutes. Seek medical assistance immediately, preferably an ophthalmologist. PERSONS WITH POTENTIAL EXPOSURE TO SULFUR DIOXIDE SHOULD NOT WEAR CONTACT LENSES. SKIN CONTACT: If irritation of the skin develops after exposure to this gas mixture, immediately begin decontamination with running water. Flush affected area with copious quantities of water for a minimum of 15 minutes. Remove

exposed or contaminated clothing, taking care not to contaminate eyes. Seek immediate medical attention.
