Last evening marked the second time Hendricks has tossed at least 7.0 shutout innings in a post-season game (7.1 shutout IP in game six of the 2016 NLCS) Elias notes the only other pitcher in Cubs history with two post-season games in which he threw at least 7.0 shutout IP is Mordecai Three Finger Brown, who had three such games, one each in the 1906, 1907 and 1908 World Series. Chicago last night was held hitless through five innings by Stephen Strasburg it marked the fourth time in franchise history that the Cubs were held without a hit through five innings in a playoff game, and the first time in nearly 109 years that Chicago went on to win the contest it was first done on Oct. 11, 1908 in game two of the World Series vs. the Tigers at the West Side Grounds thanks to Ed Hartig for his research assistance. HERE WE ARE: The Chicago Cubs, who won the N.L. Central Division for the secondstraight season, tonight play game two of the National League Division Series against the Washington Nationals Chicago aims to become the first franchise to repeat as World Series champions since the New York Yankees won three-straight World Series titles from 1998-2000. The Cubs finished the regular season with a 92-70 record reached 92 regular season victories for the third-straight campaign and for the 19th time in franchise history dating to 1876. The Cubs are the first defending World Series champions to win their division the next season, and reach 90 wins while doing so, since the 2009 Philadelphia Phillies went 93-69 and won the N.L. East by six games. In fact, besides this year s Cubs and the 2009 Phillies, the only other defending World Champion to win their division the following season in the last 15 years was the 2002 Arizona Diamondbacks, who won the N.L. West by 2.5 games. Furthermore, the Cubs are the first defending World Champions to even make the playoffs the next season since the 2012 Cardinals secured a Wild Card spot the Cubs have snapped a four-year drought in which the defending World Series champion failed to qualify for postseason the following year. The Cubs have now qualified for post-season play three years in a row for the first time since 1906-08. BUSY BODIES: The Cubs have played a major league-high 513 games between the regular season and postseason since the start of the 2015 campaign Toronto is second with 506 combined games in that span, followed by the Dodgers (503). OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN: Manager Joe Maddon is the first Cubs manager to lead the team to three-straight postseasons since Frank Chance did so from 1906-08 this is Maddon s seventh postseason appearance as a manager, having taken Tampa Bay to the playoffs in 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2013. Maddon recorded his 1,000th career managerial victory, May 17 vs. Cincinnati.
