Pennant, four-games-to-two Chicago advanced to this year s NLCS by defeating the Washington Nationals in the NLDS, three-games-totwo, including a wild 9-8 victory in Thursday s decisive game five in Washington. This marks the third time the Cubs and Dodgers meet in the postseason Chicago was swept in the 2008 NLDS, three-games-to-none, before meeting last year s NLCS. Chicago has now reached the NLCS in three-straight years, meeting the Mets there in 2015 (swept, 4-0) and the Dodgers last season (won, 4-2) the Cubs are the first team to reach three-straight NLCS rounds since the St. Louis Cardinals made four-straight appearances from 2011-14. Chicago aims to become the first franchise to repeat as World Series champions since the New York Yankees won three-straight World Series titles from 1998-2000. WHO KNEW?: This is the sixth time the Cubs have appeared in the NLCS the team s previous appearances in the NLCS: 1984 vs. San Diego (L, 3-2), 1989 vs. San Francisco (L, 4-1), 2003 vs. Florida (L, 4-3), 2015 vs. New York (L, 4-0) and 2016 vs. Los Angeles (W, 4-2). GAME ONES: The Cubs are 9-14-1 in their 24 opening games of post-season series, including a 1-0 mark this year, a 2-1 record in 2016 and a 1-2 record in 2015 Chicago is 2-3 all-time in the opening game of the NLCS. THE NLDS GAME FIVE: Chicago on Thursday erased a 4-1 deficit through two innings and took a 7-4 lead through five innings before eventually winning, 9-8 Chicago s four-run fifth inning against Max Scherzer featured a two-run double by Addison Russell, a Jason Heyward intentional walk, a run scoring Javier Báez passed ball strikeout in which a run scored thanks in part to a Matt Wieters throwing error, followed by Tommy La Stella reaching on catcher s interference, followed by Jon Jay bringing home a run on a hit by pitch. According to Baseball Reference, none of the 2.73 million half-innings in the site s database has featured an intentional walk, a passed-ball strikeout, catcher s interference and a hit-by-pitch only five games logged by Baseball Reference have had all four events occur. Elias notes that Addison Russell, who on Thursday drove in four runs, is just the second player to collect four RBI in a one-run, series-clinching win Lance Berkman had four RBI in Houston s 7-6, 18-inning Game Four win over the Braves in the 2005 NLDS Russell is the first Cubs player in franchise history with two four-rbi games in the postseason (also, six RBI in Game Six of last season s World Series). Cubs closer Wade Davis recorded the final seven outs to help Chicago advance it was his most innings pitched since August 24, 2013, when he was a starter with the Royals and went 6.0 innings against the Nationals. Elias notes that Chicago became just the third team ever to win a post-season game after not collecting a hit through six innings the Cubs join the 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers (vs. the Yankees in Game Four of the World Series) and the 1974 Oakland A s (vs. the Orioles in Game Four of the ALCS). A MATTER OF TIME: Thursday s NLDS Game Five took four hours, 37 minutes to play that s the longest nine-inning game in postseason history, breaking the record of 4:32 in Game Five of last year s NLDS, when the Dodgers eliminated the Nationals. THE BRIGHT LIGHTS APPEAL TO HIM: Anthony Rizzo s six career post-season home runs are a franchise record his 18 RBI are tied for first with Addison Russell and his 28 hits rank tied for second Rizzo s six NLDS RBI against Washington were a franchise record, surpassing four RBI from both Mark DeRosa (2008 vs. Dodgers) and Jorge Soler (2015 vs. Cardinals). DEFENDING CHAMPS: The Cubs finished the regular season with a 92-70 record reached 92 regular season victories for the thirdstraight campaign and for the 19th time in franchise history dating to 1876. The Cubs are the first defending World Series champions to win their division the next season, and reach 90 wins while doing so, since the 2009 Philadelphia Phillies went 93-69 and won the N.L. East by six games. In fact, besides this year s Cubs and the 2009 Phillies, the only other defending World Champion to win their division the following season in the last 15 years was the 2002 Arizona Diamondbacks, who won the N.L. West by 2.5 games. Furthermore, the Cubs are the first defending World Champions to even make the playoffs the next season since the 2012 Cardinals secured a Wild Card spot the Cubs have snapped a four-year drought in which the defending World Series champion failed to qualify for postseason the following year. BUSY BODIES: The Cubs have played a major league-high 517 games between the regular season and postseason since the start of the 2015 campaign Toronto is second with 506 games played while the Dodgers are third at 505. The Cubs lead the majors in combined regular season and post-season victories in that span, with 310 the Dodgers are second (297), followed by the Indians (289). For reference, Cubs pitching has thrown a major-league high 4,645.1 innings between the regular season and postseason starting in 2015 the Detroit Tigers have thrown the fewest in that stretch, recording 4,295.1 innings pitched. OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN: Manager Joe Maddon is the first Cubs manager to lead the team to three-straight postseasons since Frank Chance did so from 1906-08 this is Maddon s seventh postseason appearance as a manager, having taken Tampa Bay to the playoffs in 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2013. BREAKING UP: The Cubs posted a 49-25 (.662) record following the All-Star Break, the best mark in the N.L. and trailing only Cleveland (55-20,.733) Chicago ranked second in the majors with a +127 run differential following the Break, trailing only Cleveland (+180). Chicago led the majors with 423 runs scored in 74 games following the All-Star Break, making that the second-most prolific second half in franchise history since the All-Star Game began in 1933 the 1935 Cubs plated 487 runs in 82 games after the Break.
