Myrtle Beach Pelicans (49-58, 15-22) vs. Down East Wood Ducks (46-62, 11-27) Tuesday, July 31, 2018-7:05 p.m. Game No. 108 Second Half Game No. 38 Home Game No. 57 TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark Myrtle Beach, S.C. MiLB.tv MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch TuneIn RHP Alex Lange (6-7, 3.61 ERA) vs. LHP Joe Palumbo (0-3, 4.15 ERA) PELICANS EDGE HILLCATS TO TAKE SERIES D.J. Wilson collected three hits Sunday to help the Myrtle Beach Pelicans slip by the Lynchburg Hillcats 4-3 from TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. Wilson scored in the first inning on Jhonny Pereda s sacrifice fly for the game s first run. After the Hillcats tied the score in the second, Wladimir Galindo scored on a wild pitch in the fifth to put the Birds back in front at 2-1. Lynchburg knotted the score again in the seventh. However, in the bottom of the frame, Aramis Ademan s two-run single made it 4-2. Jodd Carter notched an RBI base hit in the ninth, but Jose Paulino got Trenton Brooks to ground out to end the ballgame. Justin Steele pitched five innings with just an unearned run against his ledger in his first start for Myrtle Beach since August 1, 2017. MACY S THANKSGIVING PEREDA Jhonny Pereda went 1-for-3 on Sunday, pushing his on-base streak to 20 games. Over these last 20 contests, Pereda is 25-for-79 (.316/.386/.430) with a double, triple, two home runs, 10 RBIs and nine walks. On the season, Pereda s opposite field rate of 36.8 percent ranks eighth in the Carolina League. He has also posted the eighth-highest line drive rate (23.6 percent), with a swinging-strike rate of 8.3 percent that places as the eighth-lowest in the circuit. In his five minor league seasons prior to this one, Pereda played in an average of just 53.2 games per campaign, slashing.238/.323/.302. This year, he is at.283/.356/.387 in 92 games. EYE OF THE TIGER Myrtle Beach starter Alex Lange ranks eighth in the Carolina League with a 3.61 ERA. The former LSU Tiger is third in the circuit in WHIP (1.16) thanks to his impeccable control; Lange has walked only 6.0 percent of batters this season, the fourth-lowest in the league. In comparison, the Lee s Summit, Mo., native has struck out 21.3 percent of opposing hitters, the eighth-best mark in the circuit. This combination of strikeouts and walks has helped push Lange s FIP, an ERA estimator based on factors most within a pitcher s control like strikeouts, walks and home runs, down to 3.21, the third-best mark in the league. Opponents are also just 9-for-17 (52.9 percent) stealing bases against Lange, the eighth-lowest such mark in the league. THE WEEK AHEAD YOUNG FOREVER In the first four games following his July 7 promotion from Low-A South Bend to Myrtle Beach, Jared Young went just 2-for-15 (.133) with an RBI and three walks. However, the Prince George, British Columbia native seems to be starting to figure out the High-A level. Over the last 16 games, he is batting 22-for-61 with two doubles, two home runs, 10 RBIs and four walks to slash.361/.400/.492. Young has reached base in all 20 games with Myrtle Beach, and dating back to his time with Low-A South Bend, is currently on a 29-game on-base streak. PITCH (NEARLY) PERFECT Myrtle Beach surrendered at least five runs in each contest of the club s six-game losing streak from July 18 through the opener of a doubleheader on July 24. Since that losing streak, the Pelicans have yielded five runs or more just once over their next six games leading into their Tuesday series opener with Down East. Over the last six games, the Birds have allowed a grand total of 14 runs. The club s starting rotation has yielded just four runs, three earned, on 14 hits in 30.0 innings for a 0.90 ERA. Myrtle Beach starters have whiffed 31 against nine walks during this span. ONE WAY OR ANOTHER Myrtle Beach s 4-3 victory on Sunday over Lynchburg was the fifth consecutive one-run affair for the Birds, and their sixth out of the last seven contests. On June 10, the Pelicans beat Salem 4-3 to push their record to 10-3 in one-run games, the best such mark in the Carolina League at the time. Since that point, though, Myrtle Beach has played 14 games decided by one run and lost 10 of them, dropping their record to 14-13 in one-run engagements. PELICAN POINTS Erick Leal was named the Carolina League s Pitcher of the Week on Monday. The right-hander pitched 8.1 scoreless innings over two appearances, including one start, during the week, posting 11 strikeouts against no walks and two hits allowed... Andruw Monasterio has reached base in 10 straight games, going 13-for-33 (.394/.487/.455) with two doubles, five walks and a hit by pitch during that stretch... Myrtle Beach has outscored Down East 105-63 over their 18 meetings this year. The Birds are 13-5 against the Woodies. DATE TIME OPPONENT PELICANS STARTER OPP. STARTER Wed. The right-hander was one of two pitchers the Cubs tabbed in the first round, joining southpaw Brendon Little, who was picked 27th overall out of the State Junior College of Florida. -Alex was adopted on the day after he was born by Renee Lange and her husband Craig. When Alex was in first grade, the couple divorced and Renee raised Alex by herself. She has been the biggest influence on my life, Alex told NOLA.com. She adopted me and raised me by herself for most of my life. She has helped me through everything.... She had to play the bad guy at times. Everything I ve accomplished I attribute to her. My mom tells me sometimes that she was lucky that she adopted me, but I m the one who got lucky. I can t imagine what my life would be like without her. -Alex first visited LSU and Baton Rouge in June of 2012, when he pitched for a Baton Rougebased Marucci Elite summer team. The Missouri native instantly fell in love with the Bayou culture, and learned to cook Cajun favorites for when he returned back home. On that same note, he also made sure to stock his mother s spice cabinet with a Louisiana special, Tony Chachere s. -Lange had a legendary career at LSU. The right-hander pitched the Tigers into the College World Series twice, winning a pair of games in Omaha. He finished his career just three strikeouts shy of the career record of 409 set by Scott Schultz over four seasons from 1991-95. Overall, Lange posted a 30-9 career record with a 2.91 ERA, 143 walks and 406 strikeouts in 350 innings while limiting opponents to a.222 batting average. His 30 victories place fifth on LSU s all-time wins list. -A Second Team All-American and First Team All-SEC honoree as a junior in 2017, Lange registered a 10-5 record and a 2.97 ERA in 124.1 innings with 48 walks and 150 strikeouts. -Lange burst onto the scene as a freshman in 2015, courtesy of two changes from LSU pitching coach Alan Dunn. Dunn coaxed Lange into losing 25 pounds, and also eliminated the righthander s slider, allowing Lange to focus more on his curveball. Lange wound up earning First Team All-American, First Team All-SEC and SEC Freshman of the Year after going 12-0 with a 1.97 ERA in 114 innings with 46 walks and 131 strikeouts. 2018 SEASON -Over 10 starts from May 17 through July 16, Lange yielded just 15 runs on 45 hits in 53.1 innings for a 2.53 ERA. Over that span, he whiffed 52 against 11 walks. -The right-hander has fared worse when working from the stretch this season. In 227 plate appearances with the bases empty, Lange is holding opponents to a.238 average and.614 OPS. However, in 140 plate appearances with runners on, opponents are batting.256 with a.704 OPS. -Lange doubled his previous career-high with 10 strikeouts in a start against Lynchburg on May 23, scattering six hits without walking a batter in six shutout frames. 2017 SEASON -The Cubs held Lange to just 9.1 innings in an effort to keep his inning total down from the collegiate season. ADDITIONAL CAREER NOTES -Lange made three appearances (one start) on the mound for the USA Collegiate National Team in the summer of 2016, allowing just two hits in nine scoreless innings with one walk and seven strikeouts. -When Lange got to Lee s Summit West High School as a freshman, he joined a club dedicated to influencing students to remain tobacco, drug and alcohol-free. As he made his way through high school, Lange remained in the club and wound up as an officer. Lange finished high school with a perfect 4.0 GPA. -Following a senior season when he compiled a 9-0 record with 120 strikeouts and an 0.95 ERA in 71 innings, Lange was named the 2014 Missouri Gatorade Player of the Year and an All-American by Perfect Game.
