Oklahoma State (43-22): OSU is back in the CWS for the 20th time where they own a 40-38 all-time record The Cowboys are one of 30 teams with an all-time winning record in the CWS Among teams to play at least 30 games in Omaha, they re one of just 10 to win more games than they ve lost OSU won the 1959 national title defeating Arizona 4-0 and 5-3 for its only baseball title The Cowboys return to the CWS for the first time since 1999 The 16-year drought was tied for the longest drought among the six schools to make at least 20 CWS trips Most CWS trips all-time: Texas/35, Miami, Fla./25, Arizona State/22, Florida State/21, USC/21 and Oklahoma State/20 Josh Holliday completed his fourth year as head coach with a 170-79 all-time record as head coach Sports a 13-8 all-time record in NCAA Tournament This was the eighth meeting between Arizona and Oklahoma State in the College World Series;; the Cowboys have won 4 of 8 and eliminated the Wildcats 3 times (1954, 1955, 1959) Holiday, who has guided the Cowboys to four-straight NCAA postseason berths, is the 17th person to reach the CWS as both a player and coach Was a member of the 1996 and 1999 OSU teams as a pitcher Also made appearances with Georgia Tech (2006/Assistant Coach), Arizona State (2009) and Vanderbilt (2011) Holiday and his father Tom (OSU head coach from 1997-2003) are the first father-son combination to lead teams to the CWS Tom led OSU to the 1999 CWS where the Cowboys went 0-2 losing to Alabama 11-3 and Rice 7-2 Josh s brother Matt Holliday is a current member of the St. Louis Cardinals and seven-time MLB All-Star Oklahoma State became the sixth team to post 40 CWS wins (others: Texas/85, USC/74, Arizona State/61, Miami (Fla.)/48, Stanford/40) after beating Arizona 1-0 in Game 1 of the CWS The Cowboys are the first team in CWS history to throw consecutive 1-0 shutouts (vs. UC Santa Barbara and vs. Arizona) Thomas Hatch (9-3) saw his 2016 NCAA Tournament scoreless streak snapped at 23.1 innings after allowing a pair of runs in the first inning against Arizona After tossing nine shutout frames in Game 1 of the 2016 CWS vs. Arizona, Hatch was touched for four runs (all earned) on five hits with two walks in 2.0-plus innings (shortest outing of season) He currently stands fifth on the Cowboys single-season innings pitched charts (130.1 IP) J.R. Davis plated OSU s first run of the game with a sac fly to left field that pushed across Jon Littell, who singled to open the third inning Tallied team co-leading 25th multi-hit game with a single in the eighth inning Trey Cobb made his 24th appearance of the season (12th in relief) where he allowed one run (unearned) on four hits with a walk and five strikeouts in a season-high five innings of relief Tyler Buffett tossed one inning of scoreless relief In two CWS appearances has nine shutout innings with six strikeouts Conor Costello singled in the top of the ninth to extending his current hit streak to a season-best 14 games It was his 14th hit of the postseason OSU has scored 41 runs in the NCAA Tournament, while opponents have crossed home 20 times For the second time in this postseason, OSU trailed in a contest when Arizona scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first in Game 13 (also trailed in G11 after the first inning). OSU had not trailed in seven games in the NCAA Tournament (a NCAA Tournament record) The last team to enter the CWS without trailing in the NCAA Tournament was Georgia Tech (2002) For the first time in program history the Cowboys will not make the CWS Finals after starting 2-0 In the five previous 2-0 starts they have reached the CWS championship game (winner: 1959;; runner-up: 1961, 1981, 1987 and 1990)
