FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello everyone As I sit down to write this I am thinking of our first race meeting at Hampton Downs last week and memories of a good friend and a long time Auckland Car Club member Lance Humphreys come to mind. Lance sadly passed away earlier this year. The reason he comes to mind is that his daughter Megan competed in her very first circuit race at our first round in her late dad s Chevy Monza. Lance was a regular competitor in his Chevy Monza and was a past president and stalwart of the Production Muscle Car racing series that has supported Auckland Car Club since the late 1990 s. Lance s late brother Glenn Humphreys (XW Falcon) and his son in law Jason McGregor (XD Falcon) all competed in the same series and it is great to have Megan continuing the family tradition. We also had another new lady driver in the Muscle car ranks Natalie Waite that many of you who frequent the club and our events would know quite well. She is the current president of the Production Muscle Cars and on the executive for the club, is an avid Holden fan so no surprises in her choice of race car which you can see pictured on the cover page of this newsletter. This leads me into my next train of thought. The Auckland Car Club has introduced a new class to run in conjunction with the Production Muscle Car Class and it will run to very similar rules to the PMC series. We have called it the Auckland Heritage Race Series and it is designed to cater for cars that are pre 1985 and have a heritage of racing. Where this class differs from the PMC class is that they don t need to be six cylinder or V8 s so Mk1/Mk2 escorts, V4 capris, Minis, Cortinas and similar such vehicles. These cars can be originals or replicas of four cylinders or above powered machines. What we are trying to recreate is a class that represents how the Bathurst and other such meetings ran back in the day with all types of manufacturers vying for honours in their particular class combined in a mixed field of four and six cylinder, V8 s and V12 s. The cars for this class will need safety equipment as set out Schedule A of the MotorSport manual but you won t need to have a roll cage (although this is recommended) and must run on tyres that are able to get a warrant of fitness in NZ (not just DOT rated). Cars will be allowed with or without COD s (certificate of description). All enquires are welcomed if you think this new class may suit you. It is designed around cost effective racing and have fun with involvement for the whole family and after race BBQ s are always provided. Please visit the Auckland Car Club website for contacts and further information. On a different note and for those that didn t attend the Clubs AGM we have arranged a small loan to finish off and upgrade the clubrooms in Stoddard Road. We will be extending the tar-sealed carpark to the rear boundary to improve parking and fencing the front and side

boundaries and replacing the tired club signage and hopefully illuminating it so the clubrooms and its driveway will be easier (particularly for new members) to locate after dark. Don t forget the Clubrooms belong to you and are there for your pleasure. If you are a member or would like to be a member and would like to pop in for a beverage or a chat we would love to see you any Thursday evening from 7:30pm. Finally we would like to incorporate some of the clubs history and past members into our newsletters so for those of you who are more senior members we would love to hear from you and receive some input. That s all from me. Kind Regards Brett Davy FAREWELLING ROSS HENDERSON After serving on the Club s Executive Committee since 2008 as Club Captain and more recently Membership Secretary, Ross has decided to pursue other interests. The Club would like to thank Ross for his efforts, particularly the transition from the Club s old Microsoft Access membership to its new on-line system. The transition to the new membership system presented more of a challenge than initially anticipated but Ross efforts have resulted in a successful implementation. The Club wishes Ross well and is pleased to see he has retained his membership in the Club. Terry Riding has assumed the Membership Secretary role. Please note: Class write up s, photos and points from round 1 will be in next month s edition

Kevin Corin - Rest In Peace Like many of you I am devastated at the tragic death of our friend Kevin Corin at Hamner Springs on Saturday 1 st September so thought I should write a few words about my association with him. I met Kevin when he was serving his mechanics' apprenticeship under Jim Donald at Panmure Motors in Auckland when JD and I were starting to do some club rallies together in 1974. I also caught up with him at various race meetings where he was always taking photos as I used to do myself. My best dealings with Kevin were through the Auckland Car Club mainly on the rallying front as he was deeply involved in building and service crewing on Rolf Lilleby's Mark 1 Escort in which he also undertook some co-driving duties. We regularly caught up at the various social functions associated with rallying and at our local pub the Royal George Tavern in Newmarket. Kevin branched out into specialising in preparation and engineering of single seater race cars such as Formula Ford and Formula Pacific which saw him head to the UK where he became a sought after engineer for the likes of Tommy Byrne, Damon Hill and Martin Donnelly. While I was living in the UK, Kevin returned for a second stint as engineer for Hill and Donnelly with the Cellnet Formula 3 Team so it was great to catch up with him at various race meetings and sometimes in a pub called the Green Man near Silverstone circuit. He was personally approached by Hill to return to the UK with an offer Kevin could not refuse. After that we both returned to New Zealand where he was running a tyre shop in Newmarket and seen around the fringes of the racing and rallying scene then he suddenly seemed to disappear... or maybe I had drifted away from the mainstream motorsport scene. It was therefore pleasing to see him pop up as a friend request on Facebook a few years ago and then keep in touch until the dreadful events of Saturday. I have no reservations in referring to Kevin Corin as a top class bloke and legend in his own right. RIP, Mate and thank you so much for your wonderful contribution. Kevin Lancaster.

SPEEDSHOW 2018 PAST EVENT Auckland Car Club attended the Speed Show that was held over the weekend of 21 st and 22 nd July at the ASB Showgrounds Greenlane. We set up during the day on the Friday and had each race class supply a vehicle for the display. The walls of the stand were filled with information about the 2018/19 Season, the classes, as well as the Far North Rally. The club members manning the stand over the weekend were busy handing out the race dates cards and talking to people who were interested in getting into racing. Saturday and Sunday were enjoyable days with good weather with a steady turn out from the public. Special thanks to the following people: Natalie Waite for organising all the stand, posters and info and race date cards. Cars on display provided by Kayton Coughey from Northern Muscle Cars, Steve Elliot from Production Race Series, Brittany Sheweiry from All Classic Japanese Series, Emil Tolich from Racing Saloons, Natalie Waite from Production Muscle Cars, Bob Mitchell & Andrew Hawkeswood from Far North Rally. Without all your time and effort we couldn't do the show without you. Thanks to class coordinators and the Speedshow committee for your efforts as well you all know who you are. Thanks also to Lewis Frayne and Brendon McGovern who supplied cars for outside arena action. Cheers to those of you from the Car Club Committee who turned up to help man the stand and special thanks to Keith Jones and Catlin Chubb for your help on the stand over the weekend.

NEW MEMBERS EVENING PAST EVENT The recent new members night was held on Thursday night on the 16th August The event was well attended with introduction to Executive members and President Brett Davy. New members were briefed on the history of the club and also upcoming current events and had a tour of the facility. Some of the new members have volunteered to help out in club activities such as at race meetings. And a timely reminder that the club is open to all members on a Thursday night and friends and their guests are welcome to visit. Motorsport examiners are there to do competition licences on a Thursday night. Auckland Car Club is now one of the few car clubs in Auckland that is open every week on a Thursday and as many clubs decline we continue to grow. We are undertaking some refurbishments to our faculty and also going to increase our car park. With membership increasing year on year we are a club that believes to grow the motorsport we need to collaborate with fellow car clubs to have bigger and better events. The next new members induction evening will be held on Thursday 21st February 2019 Doors open at 7.30pm THUNDER IN THE PARK

ROLL OF HONOUR & MEMBERS REUNION 2018 Saturday 10th November 2018-2pm start The Club will be holding its 2018 Roll of Honour induction ceremony on Saturday 10th November at the Club Rooms. The Club Rooms will open at 1:30pm for a 2:00pm start. Use this as an opportunity to catch up with old friends and help recognize the accomplishments of the 20 new people being inducted onto the Roll of Honour. Light refreshments and a cash bar will be available. Pictures below of some of the special guests that attended the 2017 ceremony. Who will be our special guests this year? Find out in next month s edition of Club news.

ROLL OF HONOUR & MEMBERS REUNION 2018 The Roll of Honour was created to remember and recognize members from the past for their achievements as well as current contributions. This was created 3 years ago as a way to celebrate members who have either served the club, or who have competed with distinction and have been also an ambassador for the club. This November 10th at 2.00pm we will be celebrating our 4th induction of 20 members. The current honours board was designed to hold the first 100 names for the first 5 years then this will permanently hung on the wall at the club rooms. Last year s event was a huge success and we expect this year s will also be well attended, and it is free to attend for current and past members. We have some exciting guests coming. Robbie Francevic and Paul Radisich have confirmed their attendance and there are more special guests yet to confirm. The list for this year will be announced when all the inductees have been notified. How it works is, we invite members to submit names and information as to why they should be honoured. This is then submitted to the R.O.H. committee who then give their recommendation to the Club s Executive Committee. From there the Club s Executive will accept or reject the nominees and once accepted those people are the informed and then the list is made public. The next induction is being held on 10th November and everyone is welcome to attend. If you have someone that you think is worthy please forward the names on to the Secretary who is compiling the list for next year. Also, don`t forget we are only 4 four years away from cerebrating the 90th year of the Auckland Car Club. However our roots date back to further than that to the New Zealand Motor Racing Drivers Club which raced on the beach at Muriwai nearly 100 years ago. If you have any questions please don`t hesitate to contact the Committee.

FAR NORTH RALLY & CLASSIC RALLY 2018 FAR NORTH RALLY & CLASSIC RALLY 2018 SATURDAY 22 ND SEPTEMBER 2018 The rally has been confirmed and is open for entries. The preferred method of entry is via the Auckland Car Club on-line entry system - http://www.aucklandcarclub.co.nz/entry/login.php Key issues being pursued include volunteers for taping the stages and sponsorship of individual stages. If anyone is interested in either of these, please let us know. Queries to Bob Mitchell at mitchellsports@xtra.co.nz ph: 027-442-0613 or Craig Holmes at secretary@farnorthrally.nz ph: 021-889-488

STAGE DESCRIPTIONS Stage 1. Ruapekapeka North starts out fast and wide, gentle climb out of the valley. Narrows past junction onto flowing ridge top then opens out again to finish. Stage 2. Orakau Beautiful flowing stage, perfect northland camber. Climbs over a small ridge midway, opens out down valley to finish with an endless sequence of concrete one lane bridges throughout the stage. Stage 3 Iwitaua Starts out tight and technical through the forest then past the midway intersection gets even tighter on the public roads. Opens out beside the river for the last few km, one of the longest 26k stages around. Stage 4 Mangatoetoe Short and perfect Northland gravel, get your smile back before lunch. Stage 5 Church Road Good public road starting just above Kaitaia, going north this year. Watch out for a few tricky corners in here that have claimed a few. It s tight in places with a little tarmac around some junctions and then opens up to the finish. Stage 6 Parapara Best stage of the rally, starts out on perfect flowing cambered public road and just keeps going. Peria area at its best. Stage 7 Kohumaru Starts out tight and technical climbing over a large ridge on a narrow winding road. Tricky right in junction drops away underfoot then opens up onto a fast narrow road to finish. Stage 8 Waiere Starts out flowing and open climbing to the Puketi forest where it tightens up. Once clear of the forest it just gets faster and faster with a flat out last 8 kms. There are eight Special Stages Sponsorship opportunities available, where small to medium businesses can be involved. You will have the opportunity to erect signage between the start and finish of your Special Stage. Safety of competitors and spectators to always be considered when placing signage. Each of the organising Clubs will post your Logo on their websites until the 2019 event. The event Face Book page will also display your Company logo. The Spectator Map provided for the event will also name each Stage sponsor, as will all documentation, and route books given to competitors and crews. Your Company will be mentioned in any media release and acknowledged at the event prizegiving. The cost for this opportunity will be Eight Hundred Dollars plus GST of which at least Four Hundred dollars will be donated in your Company s name to the local Community group running your Special Stage. For further information please contact Bob Mitchell at mitchellsports@xtra.co.nz or Mobile 0274 420613
