JUDGES REPORT GSDL State Breed Exhibition (NSW) Judge Melanie Groth Bill Spilstead Complex Luddenham Road Orchard Hills August 18 and 19 2018 The show was run by the GSDL and held over two days commencing at 8:30am, finishing at 2:30 on Saturday and 3:30 Sunday. On Saturday, judging included all classes (LSC followed by SC) with the exception of Junior and Open; these were judged on Sunday. The progeny parade occurred on Sunday prior to the Open class final summation and run off. Eight sires were eligible with progeny numbers entered in the show, however only four sires presented. These were Conbhairean Freddie, Djambo Fichtenschlag, Gerry Schacher and Vablo Osterbergerland. There were no dams progeny or breeders groups presented. For future reference the scheduling of the show could include the junior classes on the Saturday and progeny groups so that the progeny do not have to come on the Sunday. The show flowed well, with excellent stewards, Cathy Shayler and Kurt Morton. Fay Stokes was the stenographer. The show manager Tony Lyons and Anne McKenzie the Show secretary provided timely results and a good ring set up. The windy conditions played havoc the management of paperwork, and with the off-lead gaiting on the Sunday but most of the dogs remained under control and it did not adversely affect any of the exhibitors. Reducing the size of the ring for baby and minor classes enabled us to save time with judging. Most of the animals were reasonably well trained however more work needs to be done on the teeth examination and the assessment of the tracking of steps and hocks and elbows on the out and back exercise. The wind however did impact on some of the animals in the assessment of the character and I believe it unsettled a number of exhibits. Unfortunately, as a result I had to penalize placings depending on the severity and in some cases animals were ungraded. One animal in the open class failed the gun. With a total entry of 97 of which 86 were exhibited the atmosphere was light and very sportsmanlike. The vast majority of puppies were graded very promising. It was pleasing to note the number of high quality long stock coats. The winners of each of the classes were able to attain the maximum grading eligible. Exhibits Stock Coats Males Females Entered Exhibited Class Entered Exhibited 8 7 Baby 7 7 6 6 Minor 6 6 1 1 Puppy 5 4 1 1 Junior 6 5 1 1 Intermediate 8 8 6 5 Open 7 7 23 21 39 37 62 entries 58 exhibited Long Stock Coats Males Females Entered Exhibited Class Entered Exhibited 4 3 Baby 3 3 2 2 Minor 3 3 - - Puppy 4 2 4 4 Junior 1 1 2 1 Intermediate 2 2 3 2 Open 7 5 15 12 20 16 35 entries 28 exhibited Total 97 entries 86 exhibited

Virtues and Faults In the Open classes, I was able to grade the State Sieger title to both varieties dogs and bitches. On the whole the quality was very good in both varieties. The colour and pigment on the vast majority of animals is very good, there were very few issues with dentition. Care needs to be taken with bone strength and size. Many of the animals stood on the upper limits of size and in some cases were oversize. In general, the bone strength, whilst medium strong in most of the exhibits it needs to be stronger overall. Care still needs to be taken with the length of the lower chest and this is particularly evident in the long stock coats. Eyes in general were of medium to dark colour. Very few light eyes. The skull and foreface on a number of exhibits needed to be broader. In general, upper arms were set a little steep and many were not of the desired length. Most hindquarter angulation varied from slightly deep to deep and this affects the stability of the hock joints. Care needs to be taken with backlines as many of the best exhibits possess a bend in the lumbar spine and this I s generally coupled with a steepness of the croup. Foreleg length on the whole was very good and most exhibits possessed good proportions. The group of Gerry Schacher had excellent quality animals that gained high placings with the LSC State Siegerin and the Intermediate and Puppy dog winners. The combination of Kelinpark Icing On The Cake and Conbhairean Lauser has clearly been a very good pairing having been repeated and the combination of the Vladimir bitch lines through Anarchy across Eroica Catch Me If You Can and Djambo Fichtenschlag have been very successful also with the puppy bitch winners SC who has lovely littermates interstate and the LSC Puppy bitch winner also. Vablo has combined well with the Sundeneka Fulz di Zenevredo daughter to produce a very lovely intermediate female and some good solid performances through the classes. Conbhairean Freddie also produced some lovely progeny that were highly placed. Handling Many of the exhibitors tend to rely too heavily on attraction from outside the ring and this mars the performance of the animals as they do not show themselves to their best. Much more work needs to be done on making sure animals are prepared for the measuring stick, having their teeth checked and the individual examination. Conclusion I d like to thank the GSDL for the opportunity to judge the SBA 2018 and look forward to watching the further development of the animals exhibited this weekend.
