April 2018 FROM THE PRESIDENT Don t forget to come to the Field Shoot in May. Enjoy the warmer weather, get out and shoot! By: Galen Mauden, President Greetings, Well it seems we are over the hump, for winters ending and we re heading into summer. It is about time, winter seemed to drag on forever. We will be starting 3D target repair soon and help is needed. Jim, Jerry and I are the only ones that know how to properly repair the things and we are getting along in years. We really need more people that understand the repair process, not only to help out but to learn how to do the patching so the torch can be passed down to the next generation. The club saves tens of thousands of dollars every year by patching targets rather than buying new mid sections. It also allows us to use our limited funds to purchase new targets occasionally. A big thank you to those that helped getting the targets ready for the Redding Warm Up as well as setting up courses and working the shoot. It is great to see members getting involved and enjoying the whole experience of belonging to CRB. The shoot was a lot of fun, even if we were competing with the Grays Harbor Clam Shoot for archers. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and we got several compliments. BOARD MEETING REMINDER The May Board meeting will be held at 6:30 PM on May 10t at the Neuwaukum Grange Hall, 38402 180th Ave. SE, Auburn, WA. 98092. All CRB members are welcome! WINTER INDOOR ARCHERY Tuesdays in the Clubhouse 6:00pm Potluck Social 6:45pm Shooting Begins Indoor league is going on now! Come join us for some friendship, food and some friendly competition. A great time is had by all! This is an Open House event, if you have family or friends that want to try shooting or just watch, bring them along. 2018 CRB BOW RAFFLE CRB is raffling of a 2018 Bowtech Realm compound bow. Tickets will be sold through Bownanza and drawn at that time. Contact Bocci Delphino (last page here for his contact information) for information and tickets. Please try your luck!

CRB 2018 TOURNAMENTS MAY 19 & 20 JUNE 9 & 10 JULY 27, 28, & 29 AUGUST 11 SHOOT THE FIELD (FIELD SHOOT) Y.O.U. BENEFIT (3D) BOWNANZA (3D) WIRE HUNT (3D) Reminder about Club Gates The first gate (Community Gate) to the Range is to be kept closed and locked at all times by all members entering or leaving the Range. Or Do You Just Belong? Are you an active member, The kind that would be missed? Or are you just content That you re on the list? Do you attend Meetings And mingle with the flock? Or do you stay at home, And criticize and knock? Do you support your Club s We Did It projects and join the fun! Or do you just pay your yearly dues And expect everything to be done? Think it over, archer, You know right from wrong, Are you an active member, Or do you Just Belong? Thank You! By: Bocci Delfino A shout out thank you to Tyler Hulse for helping with filling the potholes in roadways at the Club! PUFFS OF SMOKE CEDAR RIVER BOWMEN NEWSLETTER April 2018 Are You Planning an Event at the Club? By: The Board If you are planning any type of event at the Club such as Birthday Party, Family Reunion, Anniversary, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Holiday Weekend Event, Family Camp Over/Out, etc. with non-members involved you must contact the a Board member and get Board approval prior to the event. Thank you. This is for liability concerns. Cook Shack Help Needed! By: The Board Concessions are a key part of our tournaments and helps with shooter turn out. ANY AND ALL HELP WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. CRB 2018 Work Party Dates By: The Board Please mark your calendars as Your Club can really use your help! May 12 th, June 2 nd, July 14th and 21 st, August 4 th Work parties start at 9:00 am and last until about 1:00 pm. Lunch is provided after the work party. Old Guys and Pixie Dust By: Unknown Why is it that the old guys seem to be always working at the Club and not many of our younger members seem to show up to help out? Is it because our members think the old guys have pockets full of pixie dust and they sprinkle it around and magically everything gets done at the Club for everyone else to enjoy?

Just so you know, the old guys don t have any pixie dust and we need your help as we can t do it alone. We need your help at our work parties and tournaments. You ll find there is much to be learned about what goes on at the Club and that the people here are very nice to work with. Look over our work party and tournament schedules and give us a hand by pitching in. As far as the tournaments go; we typically set up on the Friday before the shoot, starting at 9 AM. Please help us out and volunteer! Without volunteer support and labor, there will be no longevity for the Club! You don t want that to happen, Do You? Pets at the Club, Please Read and Heed (No Exceptions!) By: Galen Mauden Standing Rules Article 1. Sec 13: Pets will be the responsibility of their owners. During CRB shooting events, all pets must be on leash. Pets shall only be allowed on the course if all shooters in the group approve. At other times, pets shall be in the owner s direct control while on Club property. Owners must clean up after their pets by removal of deposits. Offending pets could be banned from the Club by a vote of the Board of Directors. Lost Arrows? Have you lost arrows at the Club? As we collect lost arrows, we will put them in a bucket by the Registration Booth. If you want to retrieve your arrows; check out the arrow bucket. Please come and pick them up. At the end of the year if they are still here, the Board will decide what to do with them. Thanks. PUFFS OF SMOKE CEDAR RIVER BOWMEN NEWSLETTER April 2018 Club Member Arrow Safety By: Jim Walker Arrow safety is something allot of us take for granted. However, it is something that should be a top priority for each of us. To properly inspect our arrows we need to inspect each arrow for damage prior to every shot. Proper care of carbon arrows can ensure years of quality performance. However, shafts can be damaged. To inspect an arrow, grasp it on both ends and flex it away from yourself and others while visually and audibly checking for splinters, cracks, or nicks. Rotate and repeat this process four or five times around the entire circumference of the shaft. Also, inspect the nock for damage or cracks as well as the area of the carbon shaft in which the nock is positioned as this is a common area where cracking occurs. If you find an arrow to be damaged in any way, discard it immediately. SHOOTING DAMAGED CARBON ARROWS CAN RESULT IN ARROW FAILURE, DAMAGE TO BOW, AND POSSIBLE INJURY TO YOURSELF OR OTHERS AROUND YOU! Please do your part by inspecting your arrows. Arrow Removal Information By: Jim Walker When arrow removal is done properly, it also does less wear and tear on our targets! Extracting arrows from targets has been a problem for archers for many years. Depending on equipment and weather conditions, all types of arrows are sometimes difficult to remove. Carbon arrows are generally most difficult to remove from all types of backstop material. The small size of the shaft makes them more difficult to grip. The increased speed and rough surface generates more friction inside the target

PUFFS OF SMOKE CEDAR RIVER BOWMEN NEWSLETTER April 2018 materials. This reaction translates to heat buildup and can actually bond material to the carbon shaft surface. Several things can be done to aid in aluminum and especially carbon arrow removal in 3-D targets. The use of an arrow puller will enable the archer to grip the small shafts much better. The thicker and bigger the material, the more power you can generate to remove arrows. Treating the point and first 4- to 5-inches of the arrow shaft with a friction-reducing lubricant will decrease heat build-up and greatly aid in easy arrow removal. Tests prove that lubricants with higher silicone content work the best. Depending on conditions, the treatment may have to be done every 3 to 5 shots. For best results with carbon arrows during cold weather, a combination of gripper and lube is recommended. The use of silicone lubricants on carbon and aluminum arrows has been professionally tested and proven not to affect arrow velocity or accuracy. CAUTION: Always be careful pulling arrows. If several people are helping remove arrows, be sure not to stand directly behind the nock-end. When a hard-to-pull arrow breaks loose and comes out quickly, someone could be hurt by the nock-end. Think safety when shooting and removing arrows. We ve had a member get an ugly hole in his leg just for this reason. Tips and Techniques 1. Support the target with hand or hip. Arrows are easier to remove if the target is firmly supported. This way you shouldn t damage our targets. 2. Always position hands on the arrow shaft and close to the target. This prevents damage to your arrows. 3. If numerous arrows are to be pulled, start with pulling arrows on the outside edge of the group closest to you and work your way across the group, or work from the outside edge toward the center of the group. One Hand Method Support target with one hand while using other for actual gripping and pulling of arrow. Position your pulling hand on arrow shaft against target material for the best leverage. Opposing force is applied with both hands, arms and back to remove the arrow. The thumb may also be used to push against the target and add extra force to start the arrow moving. Two Hand Method Position your hip against the target for support. One hand should be positioned on the shaft with the thumb extended toward the fletching and the other side against the target. Second hand is now positioned close to the first hand (1-to 2-inches) with the thumb extended and overlapping the thumb of the first hand. To begin the arrow removal process, flex and tighten hand muscles, second hand against the first and the first against the target. Next, begin to pull with

PUFFS OF SMOKE CEDAR RIVER BOWMEN NEWSLETTER April 2018 arms and back, keeping hip pressure against the target in the opposite direction of the pulling pressure. Flexing one hand against the other creates leverage against the target and helps wedge the arrow loose. Once the arrow is broken loose from its lodged position, less pressure is needed to completely remove the arrow. When arrow removal is done properly, it also does less wear and tear on our targets! 2018 WSAA Calendar By: Jim Walker April 7-8 WSAA Safari Championship Capitol City Bowmen S /W 7-8 Double Shot Safari Tacoma Sportsman S 13-15 NASP Western National Sandy UT NASP 14-15 Spring Fling Wapiti 3D 14-15 Warm-Up Safari Silver Arrow S 21-22 No Strings Attached (Redding Warm Up) Cedar River S 21-22 Clam Shoot Safari Grays Harbor Bowmen S 21-22 Klickitat Chinook Archers 3D 28-29 Spring Fling KBH 3D 28-29 Trad Shoot Silver Arrow 3D May 4-6 National Marked 3D Championship Redding CA M3 10-12 NASP Eastern National Louisville KY NASP 12 Lilac Invitational Evergreen Archers F 19-20 WSAA 3D Championship Grays Harbor Bowmen 3D /W 19-20 Camo Classic 3D Lewis & Clark Bowmen 3D 19-20 Shoot The Field Cedar River F June 2-3 WSAA Field Championship Evergreen Archers F /W /N 2-3 Iron Amos Tacoma Sportsman 3D 7-10 US National Field and World Team Trials Darrington WA FF /U 9 Summer 3D Evergreen Archers 3D 9-10 Youth Outdoors Unlimited Charity Shoot Cedar River M3 17 900 Shoot Lewis & Clark Bowmen T 16-17 Fathers' Day 3D Wapiti 3D 23-24 CCB Shoot Capitol City Bowmen 3D July 14-15 WSAA Target championship Skookum T /W /N 22 Washington State Senior Games Skookum T 25-29 NFAA Outdoor National Mechanicsburg PA F /N 28-29 Washington Outdoor FITA WCW FO /U 28-29 Bownanza Cedar River 3D August 4-5 NW All Star Skookum Alt 4-5 Hunters Dream 3D Grays Harbor Bowmen 3D* 8-12 USAA National Target Championship Dublin OH F/N 11 CRB Annual Hunt Shoot Cedar River Alt

Nominations: Ali Masood elected as Treasurer Andy Bakken elected as Secretary Range Master Report: Range looks good, there is a lot of firewood to bring in from courses. Suggested we make D-9 a 109-yard shot, tabled. Question about burlap targets for the animal courses. Jim will look into getting burlap and making our own targets. Assistant Range Master: Dustin no report Dave there is a lot of wood to cut on the field courses. Generator needs parts, will get ordered. Dave purchased 10 lights for the club house. The will be installed in the near future. Bowhunting Report: Discussed possibility that Eastern Washington Elk will be made antlerless, still under consideration by WDFW. March 31 is the deadline for multi-season application. Spring black bear hunt begins February 21. Membership: PUFFS OF SMOKE CEDAR RIVER BOWMEN NEWSLETTER April 2018 152 paid, 9 life, and 6 honorary to date, and expecting more renewals in the near future. Records show we have about 19 new members, a number of whom joined because of the Sportsmen s Show. We need to check the number club decals on hand. Recommend we purchase 300. Tabled until we can get a count. Board Meeting March 8, 2018 The meeting started shortly after 6:30. Treasurer report: Ali emailed this reports at noon on 3/8/2018 to entire team for their review prior to the meeting. Short report gross profit is good, with very low expenses at this time. $710 net profit from last month. Month of Feb total income $13,593.97. Month of Feb total operating expenses $1,851.64. Moved $4,200 from paypal into our regular account. WA state non-profit filing is now done. IRS 990N form is due soon, Ali received key-fob with necessary data on it at meeting, should be ready to proceed. Ali suggested to committee that we consider investing some of our saving accounts into bonds or tracking stock for better interest on our money. Ali will research options and costs. Ali is using new free software to track accounts instead of Excel spreadsheet. It generates P&L,

PUFFS OF SMOKE CEDAR RIVER BOWMEN NEWSLETTER April 2018 account balance and account transaction PDF sheets (see his email). We will still need Excel for shoots to help break down the income. Each account transaction has notes that breakout if the money was used for multiple items. Also, has mobile phone app that allows you to take a picture of the receipt for tracking purposes (less paperwork?) Reimbursals for items purchased with personal funds still needs forms filled out. Mike has software club purchased long ago to track membership on a very old XP box. Currently has no way to bring this software & data forward. Need to make sure this new software can migrate onto a new box for the future. Ali software can also handle membership & send renewal emails at end of year. Ali Paypal is costing us %3 on all money we move through it. Members cover this cost and the club picks up the other $0.29 transaction fee. Perhaps we should look at another credit card processing company? There was a motion to accept the treasurer s report, seconded & passed. Membership: Club has 40 decals, Mike kept 60. Cost is $1.75 per decal. Board decided to sell $4 each and 2 for $7. 176 paid members, 8 honorary, 9 life (does this include Walt Watkins?), 60 70 non-paid members who are still receiving the Puffs newsletter but don t have a key. Ali should we send reminder emails asking for dues? Bow Hunting: 2 Ray White awards have been submitted. Can we get the road-kill rules added to the Puffs email? YES Special hunt:multi season due by end of month. The state of WA has an email list that Mike & Dave are on. They will help Robert get on it as well. Mike State proposal of no cows in typical 300 units & 100 cow tags for Clockum herd. Black bear no new units added. Turkey add to the Ray White entry opportunity? Tabled for another meeting. Puffs: Walt s obituary? Who knows the most about Walt? Jim and Dave will work on this. Perhaps name our Polar bear target in honor of Walt? Old Business: Galen is still looking for members for lease committee.

PUFFS OF SMOKE CEDAR RIVER BOWMEN NEWSLETTER April 2018 Good news on the property lease. Have 2 years left on lease New owner sounds happy/eager to renew lease We should take the opportunity during our renewal talks to push our agenda Add the right of refusal & rent to own clauses to our lease Tournaments: Dave course D was not setup for the Boar s Head shoot. Everyone was OK with this. Jim brought in some burlap sample that was screen printed on to show to everyone what the targets would look like. Does not yet have the official stencil patterns made. 4ft x 100 yards of burlap cost ~$180. Estimate ~$2/target, maybe max at $3/target. Jim will track down how much it will cost to cut the plastic stencils at a metal fabrication place (Brian Blare @ NW Metal). Estimates that 3 or 4 people could do 40/50 screen printed targets in 3 hours. Merrel targets retail at $12.99, on sale at $11 each. Mike concerned with how light/thin the burlap is. Will it stand up to our use? Bocci could we use Tyvec instead of burlap? Should we increase our 2 day fee to $25. We are putting $15K / year into the property acquisition fund. We could get close to $500K towards purchasebin 20 years. We need to start planning for the future. Target repair Jim Tracking down using shipping containers instead of constructing wooden building. Call 3 different places for prices on 40 ft boxes $2,600 for beat-up but water tight box $3,000 for ship ready box $3,600 for used once box, better than ship ready $5,600 new, not used box Bocci knows someone down the street who is trying to sell one, he will check on price and condition. Put new box next to #7 container? Boxes are 8 ft outside dimensions, what is the inside dimensions after insulation &? Use a blue flames indoor propane heater? Bocci has a diesel furnace he is willing to donate to club. Put in club house? TABLED Bocci extend the club house by 20 so we can shoot full 20 yards? TABLED Bownanza Raffle prizes and door prizes: We are a dealer at Sport Services, Inc. As such, we have to spend at least $1,500/year with them.

$4,000 club pays for door prizes. Buy through Leisure Sales & Sportco. Everyone on Board has to bring 2 items to raffle. Raffle another bow? How much? TABLED Need Course Captains for each course. Need Course Marshall to oversee all loops for consistency. Have marked yardage? NO Also need to stop anyone from bringing a range finder onto the courses. Have archers take a picture of the money-shots? NO, still on the honor system. New Business: Banquet: It was proposed that we look into doing a members banquet this year. Maybe at a restaurant, maybe a picnic. April club shoot and picnic/potluck? BJ was nominated to head committee, seconded and passed. We were informed that Walt Watkins died on Sunday, March 3 rd. The members of the club would be informed of when the memorial will be held. (This task was completed by Mike Stefanick s email on 3/11/2018.) Someone from the club s leadership committee may talk to his family about buying his tractor. No action item or point person on this. Meeting Adjourned. PUFFS OF SMOKE CEDAR RIVER BOWMEN NEWSLETTER April 2018 RECIPE CORNER (HEALTHY) Garlic Chicken Ginger Thighs Ingredients 2 pounds skin-on, boneless chicken thighs 1 cup thinly sliced red onion 2 tablespoons minced garlic 2 tablespoons minced peeled ginger 1/4 cup soy sauce 1/4 cup fresh tangerine or orange juice Freshly ground pepper Vegetable oil, for the grill Directions Combine the chicken, onion, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, juice and 1 teaspoon pepper in a large resealable plastic bag. Flip and continue to

PUFFS OF SMOKE CEDAR RIVER BOWMEN NEWSLETTER April 2018 grill until cooked through, about 5 more minutes. Let rest 5 minutes before serving. Roasted Salmon with Shallot Grapefruit Sauce Ingredients 4 skinless salmon fillets, 5 to 6 ounces each 1/4 teaspoon salt, plus more for seasoning 2 ruby red grapefruits 2 teaspoons olive oil 1 tablespoon minced shallot 1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger 2 1/2 teaspoons honey Pinch cayenne pepper 2 teaspoons lemon juice 2 tablespoons thinly sliced basil leaves Directions Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Season the salmon with 1/4 teaspoon salt, place in a baking dish and roast until cooked through, about 18 minutes. While the salmon is cooking prepare the sauce. Cut 1 of the grapefruits into sections by cutting off the top and bottom of the fruit, then standing it on 1 end, cut down the skin to remove the pith and peel. Then, with a paring knife, remove each segment of fruit from its casing and cut the segments in half. Set the segment pieces aside. Juice the other grapefruit and set the juice aside. In a medium skillet, heat the oil over a medium heat. Add the shallot and saute until softened, about 2 minutes. Add the ginger, grapefruit juice, honey, and cayenne pepper and bring to simmer. Cook until sauce is reduced by about half about, 10 minutes. Add lemon juice and season with salt, to taste. Right before serving, toss the grapefruit pieces and basil into the sauce. Put the salmon onto a serving dish. Spoon sauce over the salmon and serve Membership Our weather is beginning to look a lot more like spring and summer so get on out there and shoot, tune your bow, walk some courses, just go have a good time.
