By: Galen Mauden, President Greetings, Well it seems we are over the hump, for winters ending and we re heading into summer. It is about time, winter seemed to drag on forever. We will be starting 3D target repair soon and help is needed. Jim, Jerry and I are the only ones that know how to properly repair the things and we are getting along in years. We really need more people that understand the repair process, not only to help out but to learn how to do the patching so the torch can be passed down to the next generation. The club saves tens of thousands of dollars every year by patching targets rather than buying new mid sections. It also allows us to use our limited funds to purchase new targets occasionally. A big thank you to those that helped getting the targets ready for the Redding Warm Up as well as setting up courses and working the shoot. It is great to see members getting involved and enjoying the whole experience of belonging to CRB. The shoot was a lot of fun, even if we were competing with the Grays Harbor Clam Shoot for archers. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and we got several compliments. Old Guys and Pixie Dust By: Unknown Why is it that the old guys seem to be always working at the Club and not many of our younger members seem to show up to help out? Is it because our members think the old guys have pockets full of pixie dust and they sprinkle it around and magically everything gets done at the Club for everyone else to enjoy?
Just so you know, the old guys don t have any pixie dust and we need your help as we can t do it alone. We need your help at our work parties and tournaments. You ll find there is much to be learned about what goes on at the Club and that the people here are very nice to work with. Look over our work party and tournament schedules and give us a hand by pitching in. As far as the tournaments go; we typically set up on the Friday before the shoot, starting at 9 AM. Please help us out and volunteer! Without volunteer support and labor, there will be no longevity for the Club! You don t want that to happen, Do You? Pets at the Club, Please Read and Heed (No Exceptions!) By: Galen Mauden Standing Rules Article 1. Sec 13: Pets will be the responsibility of their owners. During CRB shooting events, all pets must be on leash. Pets shall only be allowed on the course if all shooters in the group approve. At other times, pets shall be in the owner s direct control while on Club property. Owners must clean up after their pets by removal of deposits. Offending pets could be banned from the Club by a vote of the Board of Directors. Lost Arrows? Have you lost arrows at the Club? As we collect lost arrows, we will put them in a bucket by the Registration Booth. If you want to retrieve your arrows; check out the arrow bucket. Please come and pick them up. PUFFS OF SMOKE CEDAR RIVER BOWMEN NEWSLETTER April 2018 Club Member Arrow Safety By: Jim Walker Arrow safety is something allot of us take for granted. However, it is something that should be a top priority for each of us. To properly inspect our arrows we need to inspect each arrow for damage prior to every shot. Proper care of carbon arrows can ensure years of quality performance. However, shafts can be damaged. To inspect an arrow, grasp it on both ends and flex it away from yourself and others while visually and audibly checking for splinters, cracks, or nicks. Rotate and repeat this process four or five times around the entire circumference of the shaft. Also, inspect the nock for damage or cracks as well as the area of the carbon shaft in which the nock is positioned as this is a common area where cracking occurs. If you find an arrow to be damaged in any way, discard it immediately. SHOOTING DAMAGED CARBON ARROWS CAN RESULT IN ARROW FAILURE, DAMAGE TO BOW, AND POSSIBLE INJURY TO YOURSELF OR OTHERS AROUND YOU! Please do your part by inspecting your arrows. Arrow Removal Information By: Jim Walker When arrow removal is done properly, it also does less wear and tear on our targets! Extracting arrows from targets has been a problem for archers for many years. Depending on equipment and weather conditions, all types of arrows are sometimes difficult to remove. Carbon arrows are generally most difficult to remove from all types of backstop material. The small size of the shaft makes them more difficult to grip. The increased speed and rough surface generates more friction inside the target
PUFFS OF SMOKE CEDAR RIVER BOWMEN NEWSLETTER April 2018 materials. This reaction translates to heat buildup and can actually bond material to the carbon shaft surface. Several things can be done to aid in aluminum and especially carbon arrow removal in 3-D targets. The use of an arrow puller will enable the archer to grip the small shafts much better. The thicker and bigger the material, the more power you can generate to remove arrows. Treating the point and first 4- to 5-inches of the arrow shaft with a friction-reducing lubricant will decrease heat build-up and greatly aid in easy arrow removal. Tests prove that lubricants with higher silicone content work the best. Depending on conditions, the treatment may have to be done every 3 to 5 shots. For best results with carbon arrows during cold weather, a combination of gripper and lube is recommended. The use of silicone lubricants on carbon and aluminum arrows has been professionally tested and proven not to affect arrow velocity or accuracy. CAUTION: Always be careful pulling arrows. If several people are helping remove arrows, be sure not to stand directly behind the nock-end. When a hard-to-pull arrow breaks loose and comes out quickly, someone could be hurt by the nock-end. Think safety when shooting and removing arrows. We ve had a member get an ugly hole in his leg just for this reason. Tips and Techniques 1. Support the target with hand or hip. Arrows are easier to remove if the target is firmly supported. This way you shouldn t damage our targets. 2. Always position hands on the arrow shaft and close to the target. This prevents damage to your arrows. 3. If numerous arrows are to be pulled, start with pulling arrows on the outside edge of the group closest to you and work your way across the group, or work from the outside edge toward the center of the group. One Hand Method Support target with one hand while using other for actual gripping and pulling of arrow. Position your pulling hand on arrow shaft against target material for the best leverage. Opposing force is applied with both hands, arms and back to remove the arrow. The thumb may also be used to push against the target and add extra force to start the arrow moving. Two Hand Method Position your hip against the target for support. One hand should be positioned on the shaft with the thumb extended toward the fletching and the other side against the target. Second hand is now positioned close to the first hand (1-to 2-inches) with the thumb extended and overlapping the thumb of the first hand. To begin the arrow removal process, flex and tighten hand muscles, second hand against the first and the first against the target. Next, begin to pull with
PUFFS OF SMOKE CEDAR RIVER BOWMEN NEWSLETTER April 2018 arms and back, keeping hip pressure against the target in the opposite direction of the pulling pressure. Flexing one hand against the other creates leverage against the target and helps wedge the arrow loose. Once the arrow is broken loose from its lodged position, less pressure is needed to completely remove the arrow. Treasurer report: Ali emailed this reports at noon on 3/8/2018 to entire team for their review prior to the meeting. Short report gross profit is good, with very low expenses at this time. $710 net profit from last month. Month of Feb total income $13,593.97. Month of Feb total operating expenses $1,851.64. Moved $4,200 from paypal into our regular account. WA state non-profit filing is now done. IRS 990N form is due soon, Ali received key-fob with necessary data on it at meeting, should be ready to proceed. Ali suggested to committee that we consider investing some of our saving accounts into bonds or tracking stock for better interest on our money. Ali will research options and costs. Ali is using new free software to track accounts instead of Excel spreadsheet. It generates P&L,

Each account transaction has notes that breakout if the money was used for multiple items. Mike has software club purchased long ago to track membership on a very old XP box. Currently has no way to bring this software & data forward. Need to make sure this new software can migrate onto a new box for the future. Ali software can also handle membership & send renewal emails at end of year. Ali Paypal is costing us %3 on all money we move through it. Members cover this cost and the club picks up the other $0.29 transaction fee. Does not yet have the official stencil patterns made. 4ft x 100 yards of burlap cost ~$180. Estimate ~$2/target, maybe max at $3/target. Jim will track down how much it will cost to cut the plastic stencils at a metal fabrication place (Brian Blare @ NW Metal). Estimates that 3 or 4 people could do 40/50 screen printed targets in 3 hours. Merrel targets retail at $12.99, on sale at $11 each. Mike concerned with how light/thin the burlap is. Will it stand up to our use? Bocci could we use Tyvec instead of burlap? Should we increase our 2 day fee to $25. We are putting $15K / year into the property acquisition fund. PUFFS OF SMOKE CEDAR RIVER BOWMEN NEWSLETTER April 2018 RECIPE CORNER (HEALTHY) Garlic Chicken Ginger Thighs Ingredients 2 pounds skin-on, boneless chicken thighs 1 cup thinly sliced red onion 2 tablespoons minced garlic 2 tablespoons minced peeled ginger 1/4 cup soy sauce 1/4 cup fresh tangerine or orange juice Freshly ground pepper Vegetable oil, for the grill Directions Combine the chicken, onion, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, juice and 1 teaspoon pepper in a large resealable plastic bag. Seal and shake to coat the chicken with the marinade. Refrigerate 1 hour or overnight. Preheat a grill to medium high and oil the grate. Grill the chicken skin-side down until marked, 5 to 6 minutes. Flip and continue to

Roasted Salmon with Shallot Grapefruit Sauce Ingredients 4 skinless salmon fillets, 5 to 6 ounces each 1/4 teaspoon salt, plus more for seasoning 2 ruby red grapefruits 2 teaspoons olive oil 1 tablespoon minced shallot 1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger 2 1/2 teaspoons honey Pinch cayenne pepper 2 teaspoons lemon juice 2 tablespoons thinly sliced basil leaves Directions Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Season the salmon with 1/4 teaspoon salt, place in a baking dish and roast until cooked through, about 18 minutes. While the salmon is cooking prepare the sauce. Cut 1 of the grapefruits into sections by cutting off the top and bottom of the fruit, then standing it on 1 end, cut down the skin to remove the pith and peel. Then, with a paring knife, remove each segment of fruit from its casing and cut the segments in half. Set the segment pieces aside. Juice the other grapefruit and set the juice aside. In a medium skillet, heat the oil over a medium heat. Add the shallot and saute until softened, about 2 minutes. Add the ginger, grapefruit juice, honey, and cayenne pepper and bring to simmer. Cook until sauce is reduced by about half about, 10 minutes. Add lemon juice and season with salt, to taste. Right before serving, toss the grapefruit pieces and basil into the sauce. Put the salmon onto a serving dish. Spoon sauce over the salmon and serve Membership Our weather is beginning to look a lot more like spring and summer so get on out there and shoot, tune your bow, walk some courses, just go have a good time.
