Last year they were runners-up to St. Bernard's. After a good start, Old Scotch faded against Caulfield Grammarians, who won comfortably and gained promotion back to the top section in 1977. De La Salle fumbled a lot more than their opponents and missed many uncontested chest marks. North are usually slow beginners but such was not the case last week and they were only two goals behind at quarter-time. "De La" did. better against the wind and were still well in it when they trailed by only 10 points at the interval, but ruined their chances in the third quarter, which they finished a point down. They held North well in the early part of the last term, but then North cut loose with a burst that gave them eight goals for the quarter and they ran out easy winners. Old Scotch kicked six goals i n the first quarter against Caulfield, Old Haileybury had little difficulty in disposing of Parkside, who went down by nearly eight goals, and St. Bede's were no match for Beverley Hills. AJAX fought back from a 21- point deficit at half-time to go on and beat Old Camberwell by 14 points and LaTrobe Blacks were too strong for ANZ Bank. In the Junior games, Monash University beat University Blues by three goals and Thomastown overwhelmed Old Paradians. The only really close game was that between Beverley Hills and West Brunswick Reserves, with Beverley Hills scoring by three points. DUTY OFFICERS FOR TODAY'S GAMES Elsternwick Park - Mr. E. Fuller. , Prt UMPIRE'S By KEVIN MeKAY CORNER As each week the umpires are told by coaches - players and spectators how to umpire, today I am taking the liberty to air my own views on how to play football in some of the most important positions on the field. The full forward's main purpose is to kick goals and to assist in the scoring of as many goals as possible. He should be a safe strong mark and accurate kick, a good ball player and, as with all members of the team, should be totally unselfish. An understanding with his other forwards and players afield is essential. You should know the type of kick the y are, whether they turn left or right - can they kick to position under pressure,? etc. Be on the move at all times. A forward who stands still is easy to mind. Learn to read the play from further upfield. This is essential when leading, as you should be in the front position 90 per cent of the time. When kicking for goal, aim to place the ball "through" not to the goals. Be part of as many goals as possible. Centre line players are two-way players - attacking one moment and defending the next - mainly over the area between the half-forward and half back lines. Centre play is the pivot of action for the team. Centremen must be fast with the ability to turn both ways at top speed, and sure ball handlers, both in the air and on the ground. They should practice all the skills at top pace, especially kicking, which must also be accurate. When opposing defenders have the ball, play close to your opponent, but when your own defender has the ball, break away to the open space. Don't crowd your forwards, but if the run of the play does take you to the forward line, return to your position immediately you have disposed of the ball. A golden rule for full-backs is to "cover your opponent at all times" discipline yourself to this task. A top full back must be a good mark and a long kick, and physically strong enough to win the ball from scrimmages and ground play. Try to position yourself between the flight of the ball and your opponent. Make the ball your objective - attack it with confidence. When clearing the ball kick to the flank, and if you have made a dash down field return to your position immediately you have kicked. Have an understanding with your back pocket players to "cover" for you if you are forced to follow your opponent up field. If unable to mark - punch the ball towards the flank. DO YOU KNO W That on Saturday, July 23rd, 1938 there was a remarkable series of results to four of the six V.F.L. fixtures. Each finished one point the difference. Essendon d Collingwood. Melbourne d Hawthorn. North Melbourne d South Melbourne. Geelong d St Kilda - All by a one point margin. As a matter of interest, Carlton downed Richmond 132 to 91 and Footscray beat Fitzroy 129 to 86. All at Marcellin O.C. wish to congratulate John D. Gregory on playing his 50th game recently. "Peckie" has been a prolific goaikicker for the Reserves since coming to the club in 1973. Early in his career at Marcellin, John played several games in the firsts but since then he has been seen to be mixing his football with frequent trips overseas. Well done John. Many times during the year, I have made it abundantly clear that I have a strong regard for St. Bernard's as an efficient football machine with an experienced and canny coach in Gus Mitchell. Well as De La Salle have performed during the season, when they claimed the scalps of all the good teams and entered the final series with first grade credentials as the number two team in the competition, I feel that they may fail to stand up to the pressure of a preliminary final. Whilst neither side is blessed with a`big" ruckman, I cannot see "De La" coping with the spring and agility of St. Bernard's Gavin Mitchell at the centre bounce, as well as his marking around the ground. Lyons, Groves and the Halasa brothers can be counted upon to battle their hearts out for De La Salle, well supported by fourteen other "desperates". However, I believe that Wade, Rackham Drennan, Thompson, Mahoney, Doolan and Aughton will enable St. Bernard's to outgun De La Salle in too many positions and set up a replay of last years Grand Final. - ALF KEAM. B SECTIO N Well top of the ladder Old Scotch are in the hot seat. For some reasons teams losing the 2nd Semi appear to suffer a mental let down when going into the PRELIM. Not so Old Scotch as this is the very ammunition "The Entertainer" thrives on. Aghan uses the "Sting" well and will bring Old Scotch up to this game in the right mood. Marcellin too are buoyant and youthfully exuberant with a good sniff of A Grade in their nostrils. That is the last quarter Marcellin we saw against Paradians and not the third quarter Marcellin who looked anything but an A Grade proposition, although in all fairness Paradians have made better teams than Marcellin look grubby. What a superb game this will be. Marcellin reckon they will rise gloriously into A Grade astride the beams of President Bill (yet another) Gartner. Scotch say the man of destiny will show them the way. The highlight will be the ruck duals and the game will be won from this position. Power, Price and Carrucan are formidable and Aloisio is great but so also are Kefford and Clark if he plays GAMES and Johnson and Marx are eager. The Marcellin group are more agile but Scotch have devii. If Scotch are to come apart it will be on the half-back line as they are a little loose and Marcellin's group are very sure particularly Cullinan. Marcellin have a sound goal-to-goal line bordering on the dashing. - Cooney, John Gartner, Mahon, Cullinan and Jones. Cooney nearly kicked the ball out of sight against Paradians and his handball and play-on style started the team moving. However the Scotch centre line is a beauty - King, Tallent and maybe Brown, and this group will give the forwards plenty of chances. In this regard Cooney and John Gartner will have to curb their dashing style as Sherwen and Cox will lap up any latitude given them. Additionally "Ando" will run havoc if not closely guarded. I select Scotch to win because their class centre line will provide so many opportunities that the forwards will kick a winning score. Also on reflection I cannot get out of my mind how ordinary Marcellin's big men looked against a small Paradians in that disastrous 3rd quarter. I just wonder whether they are strong enough, even though they are undoubtedly talented. - JOHN BYRNE. John Byrne is away, but phoned his selection this week from Adelaide - Next week Norm Nugent will take over the preview of the B Section Grand Final. - Ed. C SECTION The big Monash ground plus windy conditions found Parkside wanting against Old Haileybury. Always slow starters and Mike Porter, realising the wrong wing was being exploited, Old Hails responded to the tongue lashing he gave them - they went "crazy" and began to score from the right pockets. The banning of cigarette adverts. didn't deter Don McQueen, as he huffed and puffed on the bench. Congrats, to Old Haileyburians on their win and re-entry into "B" Section. Today will be a close clash, dependant on how each team reacts to the ground. Nev. Schmidt and John Corrigan form a good back line and will have Old Melburnians talent to contend with - Urquhart, Cordner and Robertson can set O.M's. alight. John Houghton is back to form and Mike Houston's marking will add some spice to the game. To win Old Haileybury must continue with their attacking game - they like the Monash ground which is similar to Keysborough and I am going for them to win. - ALEX JOHNSON. Vealls price $770 (less with your trade-in).. 7214 D SECTION I write tongue-in-cheek - fancy tipping against the competition's outstanding team throughout the season! But congratulations on your season Old Camberwell - you did yourselves proud. AJAX have every right to think I have something against them - but let's face It, your form has been a little unpredictable in recent weeks. The chance Is there today for proof beyond all doubt that you were worthy of that glorious run early in the season. Today's Grand Finalists - Old Xaverinns and AJAX - both worthy of promotion to "C" Section and now justly established as the best sides in "D" Section. And that is the way tipsters like to see things finish up. But as for selecting a winner in today's game - well that's another matter. Three games for the year between them - "Xav's" have the edge 2-1 but one was that "one-pointer" in the Second Semi. I am not going to individualise because that is not how premierships are won. We all know Ritterman is the AJAX key but recent games have indicated that he is not the player "head above all else" that he was earlier in the season. I am led to understand that this is because he has team-mates of similar calibre. I doubt this as early in the season I was informed he was averaging 35 kicks a game - certainly "Best on the Ground" performances, So let's get to the point! Old Xaverians, consistent for weeks, must hold or at least nullify this player. If this can be achieved they can win. Xavs are an even side with plenty of height. Weather conditions do not appear to vary their performance. But weather could play a big part today because if the day is fine and the ground firm, AJAX's pace will show out. And a premiership team with a proven goal-kicker is a must - BIALEI _ is this answer provided his team-mates look for him and don't blaze away themselves. This one is a toss up ; I change my selection with every sentence. Can an all-round even Old Xaverians withhold a brilliant AJAX as they did in the Semi-Final? I have a strong feeling they can but I also hold an intuitional suspicion that AJAX are about to explode back to their form of the early rounds. There will be little in it and it will prove to be the best contest of all today's Association fixtures. The coin has fallen - I select AJAX by a margin of somewhere between one and 14 points. But congratulations to both on a superb season and the allimportant promotion which must rank as a flag for each. - JIM FIDGE. E SECTION Not being as long winded as a couple of my mates, I will content myself with I saying that St. Kevin's and La Trob e Page 6 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - SEPTEMBER 11, 197C Blacks should be avery good struggle and that I expect St. Kevin's to be a short head in - front at the finish and I wish them well in D Section in 1977. - SYD. WHITFIELD. F SECTION Beverley Hills put paid to St. Bede's aspirations to return to "E" Section and as far as Beverley Hills are concerned it must have been a~reat victory. Beverley Hills and great Brunswick now advance to "E" Section. Nothing new for West Brunswick but a challenge to both uams next year. This year there is still a grand final to be played. I don't think that I have to go through more statistics this week but %%rhat I will say is that West Brunswick proved their all-round ability in the home and away games and the second-semi undefeated. Beverley Hills have certainly been very consistent in the second round and their finals games indicate that they can accept the pressures of finals matches. Who better to play off in a Grand t'isial? On overall performance I can't o past West Brunswick. Best of luck t o! oth teams and welcome to "E" Section. KEITH FINDLAY. JUNIOR SECTION 1 Congratulations to those sides who gained promotion to a higher section last week and commiserations to those who finished the season last Saturday. This scribe is hoping to maintain the success achieved over the last two weeks. North Old Boys play Monash University (at Yarra Park) for the fourth time this season. North have won two out of the three encounters and their 70- point win in the second semi-final was most impressive. John Vakalivicous has the ability to get Monash keyed up sufficiently to beat `iorth, but unfortunately he is lackin g home ground advantage. Monash also have Sloan on top of the goal kicking st. On the other hand, Godfrey has aen kicking well for North and they also have many forwards who are accurate around the goals. betterm I North tbecause o f hroughout thei the r season. - PETER NATHAN. JUNIOR SECTION 2 Today sees the climax of the efforts made by all during the past half year. Thomastown and St. Bernard's receive the reward for their efforts by being the contestants in the Grand Final and because they have earned promotion to Junior Section 1 for 1977. In the minor round, Thomastown scored two convincing victories over St. Bernard's. The more recent was on August 21. However, to the surprise of all (except Peter Nathan), St. Bernard's showed a fourteen-goal improvement within the week to defeat the "Brown and Golds" in the important second semi-final. Today the sides clash for the third time within four weekcs and each player should instinctively know the movements of his opposite number. Final series games are different from home and away games. Failure to learn this lesson cost Thomastown dearly in the semi-final. A good side adapts its style of play to suit the occasion; be it conditions, umpiring interpretations or the bigger crowd. If Thomastown has learned the lesson their players should do well today. The season's performance by Thomastown reveals only two errors. On the other hand St. Bernard's players have shown great improvement as the season has progressed. The key to today's game may well prove to be concentration. Will the St. Bernard's team do as they did two, weeks ago? Will the Thomastown "dynamos" concentrate fully? My feelings ar e have benefited from tfinal'she experience an d that John Dri will win the ball from the centre to send his team into attack where Czerny will continue to convert his opportunities into major scores. Thomastown should prove its superiority by becoming the premier side of Junior Section 2. - NORM NUGENT. SPECTA T0R3' NOT All WED ON Q I/ALS of SPECTATORS ARE NOT ALLOWED ON GROUNDS AT QUARTER-TIME AND THREE-QUARTER-TIME INTERVALS, AND OFFENDING CLUBS WHICH DO NOT POLICE THIS RULE THEMSELVES, WILL BE BROUGHT BEFORE THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE. Alan started his great career with the Juniors in 1963 and has taken only 14 seasons to play 250 games. This record is surely a tribute to his fitness and dedication to training. All at Old Scotch congratulate Alan and we hope that his 252nd game will be in "A" Section, following next week's Grand Final. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER- SEPTEMBER 11, 1976 5 YEARS AGO - 1971 University Blues won their way into the grand final with a 15-point win over Ormond in a high standard second semi. Kevin Ladd kicked 11 goals for Ormond and leading goalkicker David Barkley got 7 for the Blues to take his season's tally to 92. Old Paradians with Johnson, Galloway and Mansfield best, had a convincing 24-point win over North Old Boys to earn promotion to "A" Section. Other teams to win finals and promotion to higher sections were "C"- Tooroonga Malvern (to meet Old Trinity in the grand final) "D" - Power House (to meet Reservoir Old Boys) "E" - St. Patrick's (to meet La Trobe Blacks) "F" - Old Ivanhoe (to meet Marcellin ). 10 YEARS AGO - 196 6 With a great burst of power football in the first half, Melbourne High gained a commanding lead over Coburg in last week's second semi, and although Coburg fought back strongly in the last quarter, High held on to win by 3 goals and go into the grand final. Best were Irish, Featherby, and W. Dick (M.H.S.O.B.) and Merrick, McIntosh, Parkes (Coburg) : Kew earned promotion to the top section with a 19-point win over Ivanhoe when they took control in a strong last quarter. Best were Gartner, Walker, Fisher (Kew) and Constance, Spoule, and Logan (Ivanhoe). Geelong scored 3 goals in the last few minutes to snatch a 4-point win over St. Bernard's and the right to meet North Old Boys in the "C" grand final. For Geelong Allden, L. Smith, and R. Wheeler starred, and for the unlucky St. Bernard's, Amott, Hancox and Mitchell were best. 25 YEARS AGO - 195 1 In a hard tough Final Hampton Rovers won their first "A" Section premiership when they scored a goal on the bell to defeat Ormond by 5 points. The winning goal was kicked by Roy Clover, and final scores were : Rovers 7.12, Ormond 7.7. Results of premierships in other sections were "C" - Myer 11.10 defeated Parkside 9.9 "D" - Elsternwick 11.15 defeated Parkdale 10.9, and Juniors, Ormond 21.18 to M.H.S.O.B. 12.7. In "B" Section Old Paradians defeated Alphington who exercised their right of challenge (in those days gained by the team finishing on top of the ladder by clear points) and the two were due to meet on Elsternwick No. 2 Oval under umpire Barnette to decide the flag. P All at Thomastown would like to congratulate John Botting, who plays his 50th game today and wish him every success in today's Grand Final. Old Xaverians congratulate John Nankervis and Don Smarrelli on playing their 50th game last week. John came to us in 1972 but played only two games. He returned in 1974 and has consistently held down the Full back position. Captain in 1975 and vice-captain this year, his safe high marking and run through style has severely dented opposition forward's confidence. Don first played with us in 1974 and has excelled on a half back flank. A brilliant spoiler of the ball and safe mark as well as the ability to get foot to ball in rapid time highlight Don's play. Congratulations to you both. May your 51st game be one to remember by all players and supporters.
