HK&HDCA PRESIDENT S REPORT 2016 / 17 SEASON The 2016/17 season provided us with was another successful and enjoyable season that brought a few challenges with the weather in the last two months of the season. Extreme heat offered us the challenge whether to play or not to play and a healthy supply of wet weather provided little opportunity than to watch the rain fall. The decision not to play on the weekend of the extreme heat was taken with great pain by all concerned across the Association and not all were in agreement. While we have rules are in place to minimise the risk to all involved in our sport the circumstances of that weekend provided for a greater risk to those participating than we considerable reasonable. Team numbers were held at a historically very strong 140 across the 9 Junior age divisions and 68 Senior teams in 9 grades. Our Junior competitions continue to improve the retention of teams into older age groups. With strong interest being maintained in the younger ages there is a clear indication that game formats being offered by the Association are providing an enjoyable experience to players and parents alike. During the winter we have been provided with details of Junior game formats that have been developed by Cricket Australia and that Cricket NSW have directed that we implement in 2017/18. As an Association we will not be implementing these new formats across the board in the coming season. We are however committed to providing game formats that are considered beneficial to the development of players skills and improvement of the playing experience available. The Association will continue to review the game formats available and implement those options that best meet these criteria. Of course, the Association is not run by one person and to this end I wish to thank the other Office Bearers of the Association, Bruce Parker, Bill White and Tim Davidson for their work and support over the last year. Bruce & Bill (Vice Presidents) & Tim (Treasurer) while not openly visible in these roles, are the base around whom our Association is built and are a sound source of advice for the President. I also wish to thank Bruce Kimberley (Junior competitions), Gavin Wingfield (Senior competitions), and Bruce Parker (Representative teams) and their committees for their tireless efforts that have ensured these areas once again ran extremely well. Providing cricket competitions for the participation of members of our community is our primary responsibility and between these three groups more than 2000 matches have been organised this season. Thank you also to Geoff Hasler (Umpire s Association), Bruce Wood (Coaches Association) and Tim Inman (Girl s Association) and to our committee members, Scott Burrows, Andrew Miedler, Mitch Burger and John Campo. Congratulations to West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook who won the Senior Club Championship and also to Hornsby District who won the Junior Club Championship. Congratulations to the 2016/17 Senior Competition Premiers, Berowra (A Grade), Mt Colah (A Reserve Grade and Kookaburra Cup), West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook (B Grade), SKLPS (B Reserve Grade), West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook (C Grade), St Ives (C Reserve Grade), Castle Hill (C 3 Grade), Asquith Rugby League (D Grade) and St Ives (D Reserve Grade). Congratulations also to the 2016/17 Junior Competition Premiers, Castle Hill RSL (Under 11), Castle Hill RSL - White (Under 12), Pennant Hills (Under 13), Thornleigh (Under 14), Kenthurst Upper Hills (Under 15) and Normanhurst-Warrawee (Under 16). The Kimbo Cup was won by Hornsby Gold Under 11s. Senior T20 competitions were won by Berowra (Division 1), Mt Colah (Division 2), Sydney Lions (Division 3), Kissing Point (Division 4) & West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook (Division 5). Success at a representative level is a challenge often measured against recent successes and while not able to repeat the outstanding results of past years we did return some very strong performances across the age 2
HK&HDCA PRESIDENT S REPORT 2016 / 17 SEASON: Continued groups in both NSW DCA and IDCA competitions. The high quality of cricket played in our junior competitions and junior representative results in recent years have been noticed at other levels of cricket in our local area with a number of HK&HDCA recently graduated juniors heavily involved with the Northern District Grade Club. We can be very proud of the healthy relationship we have developed with our local grade club and it is pleasing that we can share in each other s success because of our strong links. Northern District had a fantastic season in both men s and women s competitions. The men s teams won the Club Championship, Premierships in 3rd Grade and T20 Cup, Grand finalists in 2nd Grade and Green Shield and finalists in 4th & 5th Grades. In recognition of the leadership provided at the Club, Chris Green, was named joint winner of the Sydney Cricket Association 1st Grade Captain of the Year award. The women s teams won the Premiership in Brewer Shield T20, the Spirit of Cricket award and were also finalists in the Brewer Shield Limited Overs competition. Thanks also to our three local Councils (Hornsby Shire Council, Hills Shire Council and Ku-ring-gai Municipal Council) that host our Association s matches on their grounds. Once again they provided quality grounds for our Senior and Junior competitions and for our Representative teams. In 2017 Ku-ring-gai Council have delivered their North Turramurra Recreation Area project that will deliver a fantastic new ground for our use in the coming season. There are several major sporting facilities to be developed across our three local government areas over the next decade. Ku-ring-gai have the proposed redevelopment of Gordon Golf Course, Hornsby Council will be developing plans for Hornsby Park (Old Mans Valley and Hornsby Quarry), Westleigh Water Board site and The Pony Club site at Pennant Hills. In Hills Council developments at Balmoral Road, North Kellyville, Box Hill and Box Hill North, are several of proposals that will in years to come provide additional facilities but may be just outside our reach for new grounds for HKHDCA. I would also like to thank Barker College who have again allowed this Association to play our Under 15, Under 16 and Under 15 Girls representative matches at their magnificent school turf wicket ground. This is both a privilege and a pleasure for those fortunate enough to be involved. HKHDCA has also been granted the privilege of using the grounds available at many other schools in our area and we would like to thank each of them for their co-operation and support. Thank you to the Club committee members, team managers, team coaches and parents who put in considerable effort each week acting as umpires and scorers among many other responsibilities that ensure our junior teams take the field with the best possible preparation. Without your hard work we simply would not have a competition for our cricketers. I look forward to 2017/18 with a great deal of enthusiasm as we have many more challenges ahead. The revision of our Constitution to comply with ever-changing legislation is almost complete, a full review of training facilities across the Association is well underway and we continue looking for open space where we may be able to develop new cricket pitches both through arrangements with Councils or Schools within our area. HK&HDCA COUNCIL REPORTS HK&HDCA Publicity Report The Association places significant priority on maintaining accurate information in a range of media which is readily accessible to our players, officials and the general cricket community. Our website www.hkhdca.com.au continues to be our main source of information, with the HK&HDCA senior & junior rules, draws, competition tables, statistics and historical records stored on the MyCricket database. During the coming season we will be including a complete history of all trophy winners on the website. The HK&HDCA website is your one-stop spot for information about upcoming events, current news, information covering representative cricket; the Coaches Association; Umpires Association; Sponsors; Newsletters; Minutes of meetings; Annual Reports; the Association s Constitution; policies; Life Members; Patrons and office bearers; wet weather information; media articles; local Council information and links to member clubs and kindred bodies. In addition to our website and email communications, HK&HDCA utilises several popular online media streams, with a dedicated page on Facebook (facebook.com/ hkhdca); LinkedIn (linkedin.com/ company/hkhdca) and Twitter (twitter.com/hkhdca). This season saw an increase in the utilisation of Facebook to help keep our players and supporters informed of the developments within our Association. The popularity of HK&HDCA is steadily growing and as we went to press with this report the Association had 1,070 likes, an increase of 21% from the year before. HK&HDCA recognises and appreciates the wonderful support of our major corporate sponsors, Kookaburra Sport and Hornsby RSL. For this reason, our sponsors logos feature prominently on our homepage, with a direct link to the sponsors websites. The printed HK&HDCA business cards for key Executive members promote our Association and also promote our three sponsors with their colour logos on the back. The sponsors logos are also included in all correspondance and major HK&HDCA publications, including the Annual Report. Craig Menzies - Executive Officer HK&HDCA Records Officer Report For some reason batting and bowling performances in the Senior Competition were the poorest for some years and only one individual record and one partnership record was broken. In C3 Grade Charith Liyanaarachchi (Castle Hill RSL) took 46 wickets at a new low cost of 7.85 each. In the competition for the Kookaburra Cup Matthew and Tim Buwalda (Mt Colah) put on an unfinished partnership of 153 for the eighth wicket in the Final. They came together at 6 for 224 and cut Kenthurst out of the match. Four records were narrowly broken in the T20 Competition. This did not include an outstanding allround performance by Christopher Pastras for Castle Hill RSL against WPH-C in 2nd Grade. He scored 89 not out (8 fours & 5 sixes) out of 147 runs and took 5 wickets for 17 runs. There were no referrals involving junior teams. Let s hope that we keep this downward trend going for next season. At the commencement of the season the Executive introduced a new disciplinary category called Breach Notices. In essence it allows qualified umpires officiating in our matches to cite players for minor breaches of our Code of Conduct and/or the Laws of Cricket without it going to a full D&D process. If a player receives 3 Breach Notices within a 2 year rolling period that player receives an automatic 1 match suspension. This was a ground-breaking decision by our association assist umpires in controlling poor player behaviour Scott Burrows - D&D Chairman
ASSOCIATION SPONSORS HK&HDCA is extremely fortunate to have Hornsby RSL as our sponsor partner. We have just completed our sixth year together. Hornsby RSL has given the Association and many of our affiliated groups a true home to meet and socialise. The RSL is a terrific fit due to its location in the geographic heart of our Association and I can truly say it is an excellent location for the many meetings we hold throughout the year. This helps assure that our meeting attendance numbers are strong which is crucial to communications with our member Clubs and the future success of the Association. The RSL also hosts many meetings of our sub-committees and our affiliated bodies such as the Umpire s and Coach s Associations. Post meeting we can enjoy open and frank discussions in a relaxed atmosphere. Hornsby RSL s Showroom was again host to our largest and most prestigious event, the Junior/Representative Presentation night. This event is extremely well supported with some 500 people in attendance to acknowledge our successful representative season and recognize the highest achievers from our junior competitions. The RSL is also a great location to host other events such as Annual General Meetings and Presentation nights. My thanks to the Hornsby RSL Board for their ongoing support and in particular to RSL Assistant CEO Steve Rigney who manages our sponsorship each year and Jo Gilbert who professionally manages our many bookings and events throughout the year. 7
ASSOCIATION SPONSORS: Continued The HK&HDCA has been proud to receive sponsorship from Kookaburra Sport since 2004-05 and in February 2013, both parties agreed to continue this partnership until at least the 2017-18 season, with increased ball royalties (rebates) included in the deal. This season Kookaburra sponsored HK&HDCA and member clubs to the tune of over $7,500, comprising ball rebates, prizes and other in-kind benefits. SPONSORSHIP AGREEMENT WITH HK&HDCA In addition to generous rebates on the purchase of Kookaburra branded balls (Regulation 4 piece, Tuff Pitch and Red King 2 piece), the agreement includes some fantastic Kookaburra Rising Star Awards, with 5 monthly award winners receiving $100 worth of Kookaburra gear, and the overall winner being presented with a trophy and $500 worth of Kookaburra gear, including a terrific new cricket bat. The ongoing sponsorship agreement between Kookaburra and HK&HDCA also includes $100 worth of cricket gear for the selected player of the match in both the Ross Turner Cup and Glenn Hourigan Cup matches. The current agreement also includes the provision of match balls and stumps for the Ross Turner Cup and Glenn Hourigan Cup fixtures. Kookaburra Sport has also agreed to provide HK&HDCA with two full-sized Autograph Bats signed by a Kookaburra contracted player to be used for fund-raising purposes; and playing shirts for the Junior Representative sides participating in the annual Regional Cricket Carnivals during the season. LOCAL COUNCIL REPORTS HORNSBY SHIRE COUNCIL During summer 2016/17 HK&HDCA hired and played on 20 synthetic wickets for full day use in the Hornsby Shire. These grounds were Arcadia Oval, Berry Park, Booth Park, Brooklyn Oval, Campbell Park, Cheltenham Oval, Dural Park, Edward Bennett Oval, Greenway Park # 2, Headen Park, James Henty Oval, John Purchase Oval, Montview Oval East, Montview Oval West, Mt Kuring-gai Oval, Old Dairy Oval, Normanhurst Oval, Thomas Thompson Oval, Thornleigh Oval, Warrina Oval HK&HDCA also hired for half day use of the following 6 synthetic wickets across the summer 2016/17 season; Cowan Oval, Galston Recreation Reserve, Glenorie Oval, James Park, Foxglove Oval North, Foxglove Oval South. Hornsby Shire Council also provided 2½ turf wicket grounds for the hire and use by HK&HDCA over the summer 2016/17 season. These included Berowra Oval, Parklands Oval and Storey Park (shared with Northern District). Hornsby Shire Council is committed to improving grounds across the shire and completed the following cricket capital upgrades at HK&HDCA hired grounds in the 2016/17 financial year: Warrina Street Oval cricket wicket replacement Thornleigh Oval cricket practice nets run up & synthetic grass replacement Foxglove Oval 1 & 2 cricket wicket synthetic grass replacement Normanhurst Oval cricket wicket synthetic grass replacement Mt Kuring-gai Oval cricket wicket synthetic grass replacement Cheltenham Oval cricket wicket synthetic grass replacement KU-RING-GAI COUNCIL During summer 2016/17 HK&HDCA hired and played on 12 synthetic wickets in the Ku-ring-gai Municipality. These grounds were Auluba Park, Bannockburn Oval, Brown s Field Carrington Sportsfield, Cliff #2, Comenarra Sportsground, George Christie, Hassell Park, Karuah Oval, Mimosa Oval, Samuel King and Westbrook. The council also provide the turf facilities at Turramurra Oval and The Glade. The Association was unable to use Howson Oval during the season as council spent the summer to do major upgrades to the full sportsground which will see an improve playing experience there for all users all year long. Next season will see a new ground available for our use in both the junior and senior competitions with the much awaited opening of the North Turramurra Recreation Area ground with a brand new large senior sized ground and four new cricket nets being provided by council for our use on Saturdays. THE HILLS SHIRE COUNCIL During summer 2016/17 HK&HDCA hired and played on 14 synthetic wickets in the Hills Shire Council. These grounds were Annangrove Park, Coolong Reserve, Ellerman Park, Francesco Crescent Reserve, Fred Caterson 2-3, 4 and 6, Glenhaven Oval, Greenup Reserve, Holland Road Reserve, Kellyville Park #1, Kenthurst #2 and Les Shore Reserve 1 and 2. The council also provided the turf facilities at Kenthurst #1 and HSA Landscapes did a fantastic job of preparing the pitch for each weekend. OTHER GROUNDS During the season the Association also had the use of 10 other grounds provided by schools and other sporting organisations and we thank them for the use of these grounds. These grounds were Barker Oval (turf) Cherrybrook Public School, Hayes Park, Hornsby Heights Public School, Mills Park, Northholm Grammar School, Pennant Hills High School, Pennant Hills Park #4, Redfield College Oval and West Pennant Hills Public School. 9
UMPIRES ASSOCIATION (HKHDCUA) The HKHDCUA has enjoyed another very successful season as shown in this report. 2016 Annual General Meeting The HKHDCUA AGM was held in June, 2016 with Geoff Hasler re-elected as President, Scott Reid as Vice-President, Steve Wilson as Secretary, Simon Moore as Assistant Secretary, Tim Davidson as Treasurer, Barry McDonald as Training Officer and Gary Barton as Sponsorship & Functions Co- Ordinator (with Steve Hill his assistant). Barry McDonald, Darren Goodger (NSWCUSA), Alex Terry and John McQuillan were once again re-elected as Patrons of the HKHDCUA for the 2016/17 season. We also welcomed our special guest Geoff Garland, from the NSWCUSA to our AGM in 2016 who presented Steve Wilson with his Life Membership plaque (after being elected as the 3rd Life Member of the HKHDCUA). Geoff also gave an informed talk about developments in the NSWCUSA and Australian cricket overall. Geoff Hasler thanked Geoff for his attendance, interesting talk, presenting Steve with his award and the NSWCUSA books he handed out to all members in attendance. Training Programs Once again Geoff Hasler and Barry McDonald conducted several training courses locally. They conducted the 2016 Captain s Ticket Course, which was again very well supported by the Senior Competition team captains. The majority of attendees passed their exam. Geoff and Barry also presented the now well established Level 1 Umpire Certification Course for coaches, managers and captains of junior teams, with great success. A new course, developed by Geoff as an introduction to Scoring was presented by Geoff with assistance from Rob Hanich also. Our thanks are extended to Geoff, Barry, John and Rob for their excellent contributions in training so many people within the HK&HDCA area. Appointments Summary & Scores At the start of the season, Simon Moore announced his retirement and we also lost the very experienced Bruce Wood from the seniors. Further, Tim Crozier moved to Wauchope and Gary Barton retired. However, we did retain Jason Fletcher for his first full season as an umpire and he had a very good season. He was a great help to our coverage in both seniors and reps. Steve Redman also joined us mid-season and did a rep game and finals when not playing. Finally, (after a bit of encouragement) Simon also returned to the fold and eventually did the A-Reserve Grade Grand Final with Rob Hanich. I must give a special welcome to Jason and Steve Redman and thank them for joining us. We hope you will be with us for many years to come. This year s coveted A-Grade GF appointment went to Geoff Hasler who did his 14th A-Grade GF and Steve Hill who did his first with many more to come by all accounts. Congratulations to both gentlemen on your selection to do the A Grade GF and indeed congratulations to you all. Space prevents me from acknowledging everyone s GF appointments but you should all be very proud of your efforts. This year was a real headache sorting everyone out because the standard of umpiring continues to improve each season. The 2016/17 season, saw the HKHDCUA yet again create a new record of 318 appointments filled for the season. Unfortunately, 7 senior semi-final matches were not covered this season mainly due to having double umpires in the 11.00AM games in the top two grades. However, all our other commitments in covering a minimum of all A grade and A2 Grade games on turf wickets, all rep matches, the Ross Turner and Glenn Hourigan Cup games along with all junior semi-finals and grand finals and the senior s grand-finals were achieved an amazing effort by all our umpires and part-timers yet again! Can I also pay tribute to our part-timers (players) who did such a good job also. Well done and thank you. As usual, all senior umpires had the opportunity to umpire and get exposure in A Grade at some stage during the season as part of their development. This is important as is having double umpires in games as much as possible. This is because it gives the players in the top grades the chance to see and meet all our umpires group and from my perspective, it gives us the chance to mix and match some of the newer or less experienced umpires with an experienced umpire from whom who they can watch and learn, and more importantly, talk to after the game. It seems to be a great success given the feedback I have received from the A Grade captains and the umpires themselves especially on those stinking hot days when the workload can be shared. Off the field, Geoff Hasler was terrific again in his role as President and he was backed up by the excellent work of Tim as Treasurer and the solid support from Scott Reid (VP) and Simon in his capacity as Assistant Secretary. Further to these gents, the contribution of Steve Hill (especially when Gary retired) cannot be under-estimated in his role of Sponsorship & Functions Co-Ordinator. The transition was seamless and Steve again successfully negotiated sponsorship 10
UMPIRES ASSOCIATION (HKHDCUA): Continued from the Asquith Bowling Club at the start of the season. He also organised the Barefoot Bowls night, the Christmas dinner and our second Presentation/ Dinner night held in April, all of which were very well supported by our members, guests and sponsors, and all were a great success. Our sincere thanks go to Steve for his tremendous work and contribution to the HKHDCUA. Sponsorship I must publicly go on record and again thank David Haynes, Chairperson of the Asquith Bowling Club in agreeing to sponsor our Association. Whilst our numbers are small (25), we certainly try hard as a group to support the ABC, where we have our regular after match drinks, all our meetings, our bare-foot bowls night and our Christmas and Presentation dinners. I trust that the ABC board are very happy with our efforts. In return, I can say with confidence to David and his board that we are most grateful for their generosity. As promised, the money given goes to the development of umpiring through training courses at all levels and umpiring shirts and equipment. We have developed a great relationship with the ABC which I hope we can maintain for many years to come. I must acknowledge the efforts of all the friendly staff at the ABC who look after us so well. Thank you so much. Assistant Secretary s Report HKHDCUA covered a total of 73 representative matches (up from 61 last year) for which we used the services of 16 of our umpires. Alf James completed 11 games with Paul Pastras 9, Toby Norrish 8, Jason Fletcher and Steve Wilson 7 each, Scott Reid 6, Simon Moore and Brendon Lowndes 5 each, Geoff Hasler, Bruce Wood and Steve Hill 4 each, Rob Hanich 3, Peter Schouten 2 and Craig Easy, Shayne Harris and Steve Redman 1 each. As was the case last season, we appointed two umpires to some of the President s Cup games which assists in training as well as taking some pressure off those who umpire on Saturdays. contributions during the season. Next Season The 2017/18 season is going to be a very important year for the Association and all our umpires. The MCC Laws have basically been rewritten and there are many and substantial changes. This means all our umpires, players and officials are going to be impacted on M.C.C. rule changes next season. As the umpiring body, it will imperative that we firstly understand the laws and changes ourselves and then work with the Association in implementing the changes to suit our level of cricket. Interesting times ahead and work will commence on this very shortly for us. The winners in 2016-17 were Amardeep Gill (WPHC), Marcus Ridley (Berowra), Cameron Tunks (WPHC), Marco Levy (Kings), Dylan Bish (WPHC), Jarod Baxter (Normanhurst-Warrawee), Keerthekan Nagarajah (Pennant Hills). The Coaches Association ran 17 separate coaching programs in 2016-17 and coached 1,307 boys and girls, making HKHDCCA the largest not-for-profit junior cricket coaching organisation in NSW. HKHDCCA had a busy off-season in 2016 with its annual U/10 U/11 Development Program over 6 Sundays at Rosewood Oval, Barker College, plus its Specialist Coaching Program, which was sold out on all 4 Sundays at James Park. This program provided high quality coaching for U/12 U/15 representative standard players covering batting, pace & spin bowling, wicket-keeping and fielding. Both off-season programs were very successful with positive feedback from the players and their parents. HKHDCCA held its annual Cricket NSW Community (Level 1) accredited coaching course at the Sportsbliss Active Indoor Centre, Thornleigh, on 18 September 2016, which was facilitated by Rod Hokin (Head Coach). Congratulations to the 34 successful graduates from the HK&HDCA clubs and the local cricket community. The Coaches Association held its 8th AGM on 16 May 2017 and one of the highlights was the induction of Bruce Wood as our third Life Member. Bruce has coached thousands of young cricketers over the past 20 years and his efforts in establishing HKHDCCA in 2010 and driving its success have been outstanding. Rod Hokin, HKHDCCA Head Coach, also had a great season and won the Coach of Year award (Bruce Wood Cup) in 2016-17. Following the successful Coaches Association / Northern District CC U/15 cricket tour to Sri Lanka in 2015, we will be taking a rep. team on a 9-match tour to the West Indies and USA from 26 June to 14 July 2017 (see photo). The Coaches Association was delighted to receive continued corporate sponsorship from Parramatta Leagues Club in 2016-17 and sincerely thanks Bevan Paul, Chief Executive Officer, for the club s generous support of our youth development programs in north-western Sydney. HKHDCCA again co-ordinated the annual Ross Turner Cup and Glenn Hourigan Cup matches, as reported elsewhere in this annual report; held two free coaching clinics for Beginners; and a clinic for Blowfly Cricket, a wonderful organisation led by Mark Rushton that provides children with special needs the opportunity to play cricket. HKHDCCA again provided coaches for the primary schools Girls Super 8 program at Montview Oval in Term 4, 2016, which was organised by Tim Inman; and Super 8 Blast program at Booth Park, Beecroft in Term 1, 2017, organised by Adam Kirk. 12

SENIOR COMPETITION REPORT 2016-17 Once again the season began with our T20 competitions across 5 grades. The 1st grade final was contested between Berowra and St Ives. St Ives had overcome last seasons winners Sydney Lions in a tense semi-final while Berowra had beaten the 2015-16 runners up West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook in the other semi-final. Having won the toss, St Ives recovered from 5-34 to put on 106 without losing any further wickets. That was always going to be tough to defend and Berowra were in control from the start reaching the target in 14 overs just 1 wicket down. Berowra were also in the final of 2nd Grade. In a mirror of the 1st grade match, Berowra won the toss and chose to bat, putting on 121, 6 down off their 20. Mt Colah took just 15.3 overs to reach the target, captain wicket keeper and opening bat Michael Loomes putting on 53 in the process, Mt Colah defending their title from the previous season. Sydney Lions put Normanhurst in to bat in 3rd Grade and Normanhurst must have thought the writing was on the wall posting just 96 for the loss of 8 wickets, but it proved to be a real nail biter with Sydney Lions, traditionally strong in the T20s across all grades, making the target on the final ball. Kissing Point were soundly beaten inside 14 overs in their first round match in 4th grade but recovered to take out the final against West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook with 2 balls to spare, the only blip Josh Klingberg running out his dad after they had stabilised the chase for the eventual win. West Pennant Hills had posted 108 for the loss of just 3 wickets. You have to wonder if West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook should have retained Brent Larkham in 4th Grade, having scored 40 and 40* in his 2 innings there, he did make sure of a resounding victory for the 5th Grade side though, putting on 66*. Captain wicket keeper and opening bat Andrew Morris, who played the regular season in C Reserve putting on 63 before being stumped coming down the pitch for his first dismissal 219 @ 219 (including a century) in his 4 matches. 4-157 having been put into bat proved 100 too many for St Ives, who were dismissed for just 57 runs in 13 overs. So again 7 different clubs represented in the T20 finals, with a different club taking out each grade and Berowra (2) and West-Pennant Hills Cherrybrook (2) and St Ives Wahroonga (2) the only teams to appear in more than one final. A great start to kick off the season. Having adjusted the rating system to accommodate the C4 grade we found that we only had 68 teams enter the season proper from 17 clubs, meaning that we dropped the C4 grade and placed 6 teams in D and D Reserve. West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook entered 10 teams in the competition, with St Ives Wahroonga and Hornsby entering 7 each, Berowra had 6, completing the associations big 4. We had 3x 1 team clubs and 2x 2 team clubs. Fire and Ice, round 11 11th and 18th February So extreme was the weather that on the 11 Feb 2017 I was inundated with phone calls as reports predicted temperatures exceeding 40C. I had my phone on charge the whole time I wasn t away from a power supply as most teams were keen to cancel the matches while others were almost insisting on playing. So intense were the calls that I barely had time to consult with my committee and the executive as to what action to take. At one point I was walking outside when my phone suddenly cut out, not from battery loss but it reported that it was too hot and needed to cool down. Teams were permitted initially to cancel the games by mutual consent until the decision was eventually made as CNSW cancelled all Grade matches and announced on National TV that all cricket matches had been cancelled for the day. That match became a one day match to be played on the 18th February. It was the day immediately following another highly enjoyable association golf day (thanks Geoff Hasler) and some of us would have found golf clubs more use than bats. Many games started but few completed as Hail rained down the size of the golf balls we had been hitting the day before and bigger. Many cars in the St Ives, Turramurra and Hornsby areas were damages with reports of broken and cracked windscreens. Thankfully no one was injured as everyone sought shelter. The weather for the season never really recovered as it played havoc with our season, with 2 of the A Grade sides missing out on 4 matches plus the opportunity to complete either of the semi-finals. In fact, there were very few games that got on for much cricket in the semi-finals and we only saw 2 results, both achieved on the first day. A Grade A Grade was a prime example of the chaos that the weather caused with both Berowra and St Ives Wahroonga not playing a complete 2 day match after round 5 on the 26th November. The other teams did have the advantage of a complete 2 day match at the end of January, round 11. Rounds 13 and 14 were wiped out, and although we did manage the first days play in the semi-final, the lower placed teams, St Ives Wahroonga 25
SENIOR COMPETITION REPORT 2016-17: Continued (3rd) and Hornsby (4th) had to bow out without the opportunity to chase down the 227 and 224 runs that they conceded to their higher placed opponents before the rain washed out the 2nd day. Many reports from players in A Grade was that it was the closest competition for a number of years and although Berowra, the minor Premiers were 10 points clear of their final opponents West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook, who were themselves 13 points clear of 3rd placed St Ives Wahroonga, only 7 points separated them and last placed Asquith Rugby League, the defending Premiers struggling with the loss of a few players and the disturbing news that Andrew Watson was diagnosed with cancer at the start of the season. It was great to see the cricket community rally around Andrew and we all hope he makes a full recovery and is back on the field next season. We are thinking of you Andrew, and your family. 6th and 7th placed Glenorie and Normanhurst Warrawee will have been disappointed that the round 14 washout deprived them the opportunity to make the finals, while Sydney Lions were aggrieved that they didn t get the opportunity to try to displace St Ives Wahroonga in 3rd, but have to look at their 2 outright defeats when they analyse their season. Congratulations to Richard Johnson of Hornsby who took out the batting award, amassing 350 runs at 35 from his 12 innings. Riley Meidler of West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook collects the bowling award with his 32 wickets at 13.75. A special mention to Kushal Patel and David Steptoe, who both outscored Richard, but didn t have as good an average to go with it. Congratulations to both teams who contested the grand final, all reports tell me it was an incredible match, played the way the game should be and with some dogged performances, I did make it for the first hour of day 2 and it was great to see so many there. There will be a report later from Geoff Hasler and I have asked all the captains of the winning teams to contribute to my report as I can t be at all games. With all the horrible weather we received, it was unbelievable that we got the amount of cricket in we did - all thanks to you. To all those involved with the club - from top to bottom - this premiership was for you. We can t turn up and play cricket every weekend without the countless hours you guys spend organising, administering and babysitting! There s a whole ton of work that goes on behind the scenes to get lads on the park every weekend, and you don t get nearly enough credit. So thank you to everyone that made this possible - we couldn t have done it without you! Now - to the match report! Saturday was an awful long day for the A grade lads. We rocked up at 10am, having to be ready to play at any time, and began our warm up. West Penno were already out on the pitch with blower vacs, their drone remaining constant throughout the day as they went through at least 2 tins of petrol trying to dry the pitch out. The umpires took a look at how soft the wicket was and declared there would be no play until at least 3pm in the afternoon, so the boys had to sit there twiddling their thumbs and keeping themselves occupied until that time. Videos were watched, Instagrams were stalked, Facebook comments were made, until 3pm rolled around. Play would start in 1 hour, at 4pm. A second warm-up begun, and Captain Smally went to do what would be a crucial toss. The pitch was still very soft, and would certainly assist the bowling side. Unlike the last time we played West Penno on a wet deck at Berowra, Smally lost the toss and we were sent into bat. Finishing top of the table afforded us the luxury of being able to win via a draw, so the lads knew they had to knuckle down and bat for as long as possible. Bub and Gronk padded up and walked out to bat. A fired-up West Penno greeted them, knowing they had the better conditions to bat tomorrow with a clear day forecast. The innings started with controversy, bub skying a full-toss to midwicket, only for it to be called a no-ball! That break gave the openers a bit of a reprieve, and Bub went about his merry task, blasting some lovely drives and cuts on his way to 22. He was dismissed late in the afternoon, a short ball sticking in the pitch which he could only spoon to a deep-ish gully. Berowra 1/29 and West Penno with their tails up. Kushal you don t understand Patel was next to bat, and he joined Gronk in attempting to build the Berowra Trump s wall. Gronk would fall for 8 later, snicking off to West Penno s spinner (who was the pick of their bowlers, taking 7/35). Berowra were left 2/36 and looking precarious late in the day. It turned out there was nothing to worry about, as KP and Nick loves a GF McNay were resolute in defence. They guided the lads to 2/47 overnight, a decent start to our innings. Sunday dawned, along with an awfully bright sun. Things were looking better and better for West Penno - if they were able to dismiss us early in the day, they d have a flat and dry pitch to bat on. They had to get through KP and McNay however, who resisted sternly, getting us all the way to 72 and chewing up valuable 26
SENIOR COMPETITION REPORT 2016-17: Continued overs in the meantime. Their spinner struck by snicking off KP for 22, bringing Brad Nervous Wreck Fiedler to the crease. These two would only combine for 13 runs (including 1 dinger from Bing that hit the A Grade Shield), but again - faced a lot of deliveries, reducing the amount of overs West Penno would get to have a crack at our total. McNay, who had played so well, missed a straight one and was given out LBW for a valuable 16. Like all good batsmen (probably learnt it from me), he reckons he was not out. Berowra were 4/85, and Onions came to the crease. At this stage, West Penno were operating with pace at one end, and the dangerous spinner from the other. Paterson, the spinner, was getting the ball to bounce and turn viciously, the Berowra deck playing similar to the turners we d seen in the Indian series earlier. Paterson used this to his advantage, and struck 3 times in a short period of time, removing Brad (13) who fended at a wide one that bounced sharply and was caught in the cordon, Captain Globes in all GFs Smallhorn, who hit a full toss straight to midwicket for a quacker, and Onions (8), who got a snorter that popped off the shoulder of his bat and was caught at 2nd slip. Berowra were 7/98 and looked in dire straits. Sloppy Joe Leighton and AJ Cook came together at the crease and decided hitting out was safer with the spinner getting so much turn. Joe would hit 2 massive dingers down the ground on his way to 21, and AJ struck a lovely 4 in his 9. The 20 run partnership between these two would prove to be vital, giving Berowra the impetus they needed when out in the field, and knocking the wind out of West Penno s sails. Faf (3) and Constable Gunther (2*) dragged Berowra s total to 135 off 73.3 overs - probably a bit short of where we would ve liked to be, but worth 200 in the conditions we had batted in. The lads regrouped in the sheds and discussed what we needed to do to win this game. We knew early wickets would be key, and tight bowling was essential. The pitch was flat and dry by this point in the afternoon, so things were definitely not in our favour. The innings started poorly - West Penno s openers getting off to a flying start with some clean striking, heaps of play and misses, and a fair chunk of luck with edges letting them run away to 64. The momentum was stopped by a smart caught & bowled chance taken by AJ Cook, dismissing their opener Phil Wurth for 46 and allowing Berowra to put the brakes on and dial up the pressure. AJ and KP would bowl tirelessly, restricting scoring opportunities and picking up key wickets along the way - AJ finishing with 2/26 off 12, and KP 4/21 off 16. KP s flight and turn were causing the West Penno batsmen severe problems, and he even managed to burgle one off a rank half tracker that was smashed to deep midwicket to be caught. West Penno had gone from 1/64 to 5/93, and the wobbles began to show. AJ Cook would then pop up with the vital wicket of Jobson, having him fend one which dropped back and was kicked onto his stumps. West Penno were now 6/119, only requiring 16 to win. Enter McNay and Faf Perrin. These two bowled their absolute socks off, and denied West Penno any chance at all to score easy runs. Macca was full and straight, constantly beating the bat and asking questions of the batsmen (even the set opener), and Faf s pace and movement made him a handful to score off. As it headed towards crunch time, McNay would skittle the set West Penno opener and captain James Makin for 40, sending his stumps flying and West Penno s hopes with it. West Penno 7/121, and squeaky bum time began. They needed 14 off 3 overs, after previously needing 25 off 10. Only 4 runs were scored off Faf s over, with McNay to bowl the second last, and 9 runs required off 2. McNay dug deep, and bowled one of the best overs of the day - clean bowling the West Penno bat and sending the crowd wild. This left West Penno requiring 8 off the last over, with 2 wickets in hand. Faf Perrin stepped up, captain Smally hoping his pace would provide enough to deter the West Penno batsmen. 2 runs were scored off the first 2 deliveries, a 2 and a play and miss. A single from the next, leaving West Penno needing 5 off 3. The West Penno bat wound up, and was caught in the deep by Joe Leighton. Berowra were pumped now, West Penno had to get 5 off 2 with only one wicket in hand. A drive is hit to the deep, they burgle 2. 3 required off the last ball. Faf charges in, delivers, and the ball is driven to the deep again. The throw comes in... West Penno have only completed 2 runs and the lads plus everyone on the hill (it seemed like 1000 people from the sound) go absolutely bananas. Final score - West Penno 9/134 drew Berowra 135 - but Berowra being first placed in the table meant they took the victory. As for what happened after that... I m unfortunately not a good source of information - there were beers, beers and more beers as the lads celebrated a hard earnt victory and a triumphant season. A Reserve The A Reserve competition was less tight than A Grade with Minor Premiers Mt Colah impressing throughout, them and Kenthurst and Upper Hills finishing as top 2 with quotients of in excess of 1.5. While the semi-finals were again washed out, Kenthurst would have gone into their final full of confidence having reduced West Pennant Hills to 3/2 chasing their 194. With the persistent rain throughout the week the final was played on 27

Kenthurst will have been excited when opener Loomes was dismissed with just 1 run on the board, but there were few further bright spots as Mt Colah took full advantage of their higher position on the ladder and batted through a day and a half. Some may say this was negative cricket, but I would give them a big tick for their approach, they earned the right, and simply had to avoid defeat to take out the trophy, so why would you take chances and give it away. Maybe I am getting old. Congratulations to Matt and Tim Buwalda who came to the crease with Kenthurst still having a glimmer of hope at 7-224 and took the game away from Kenthurst with an unbroken partnership of 153. Congratulations to Thomas Lee of Kenthurst and Upper Hills who took out the batting award, amassing 495 runs at 82.5 from his 12 innings. Matt Buwalda, yes the same one who batted well in the grand final, of Mount Colah shows he can bowl too collecting the bowling award with his 36 wickets at 8.56. Brother Tim was runner up with the ball, picking up 34 wickets at 12.97. Thanks to Mount Colah for the summary below: Mount Colah claimed its second consecutive A Reserve premiership in 2016/17, capping a dominant season with a brutal grand final display. The minor premiers amassed 7/377 against Kenthurst in a ruthless day-anda-half at Warrina Street Oval, Berowra, to secure premiership victory via a drawn Grand Final. Brothers Matt (117*) and Tim (51*) Buwalda compiled a brilliant unbeaten 153-run eighth wicket partnership to ensure Mount Colah would not be required to bowl a ball in the decider. Collectively, Mount Colah was the leading outfit throughout the season, taking out the minor premiership by nine points. In a rain-shortened season, they earned 70 competition points in just 11 completed matches, including two outright victories. While they were the grand final heroes with the bat, the Buwalda brothers also dominated the A Reserve competition with the ball Matt picked up a competition-high 36 wickets at 8.56 apiece, ahead of second-placed Tim with 34 wickets at 12.97. The team also finished with four batsmen inside the competition s top 10 run-getters Matt Taylor (428 runs), Stuart Fone (415), Brody Camp (319) and Matt Buwalda (301). B Grade B Grade was a division of 2 halves. The top 4 were decided before the weather caused all the disruption with the top 4 and bottom 4 close but with a 12 point gap between the 2 halves. St Ives, as they traditionally do in B Grade started poorly after an opening draw they lost the next 3 before going on a run of 7 straight wins before losing a one day match to eventual Premiers West Pennant Hills in their last match before the semifinal. Hornsby took advantage of a forfeit in one of the washouts, but as it turned out they would have been minor premiers regardless. The rain was kind to Hornsby in their semi-final with no play on day 2 as they were in trouble at 7-48 chasing St Ives 70. Hornsby had no such luck in the final coming up 4 runs short of eventual Premiers West Pennant Hills, who when asked to bat again put on a further 68 without loss. Congratulations to Ashane De Silva who took out the batting award, amassing 483 runs at 60.38 from his 11 innings. Joshua Steel took out the bowling award with his 32 wickets at 11.97, including 4/27 in the grand final. Special mentions to Rodney Ribet of Glenorie, (I remember playing him in D2 not so long ago), who scored 501 at 45.55 and Christopher Pastras of CHRSL who scored 485 at 53.89, both of which you would often think would be sufficient to take out the prize. Thanks to West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook for the below report: Throughout the season it was clear there was a strong divide between the top four teams, and the bottom four teams. The top four teams were secured quite early in 2017, with Premiers from the previous season Kissing Point struggling to regain their footing and finishing last by the seasons end. The top four ended up being Hornsby District, WPHCCC, Glenorie District and St Ives respectively, who had all defeated another one of the top four prior to the finals. The semi finals saw third and fourth place knocked out, meaning West Penno would have to beat minor premiers Hornsby District in the final for the first time this season. The grand final was a low scoring thriller seeing West Penno being bowled out for 82 in 74 overs on a slow Brooklyn Dairy. West Penno fought back hard and bowled Hornsby out for 78 runs in 60 overs. This game was looking back and forth throughout up until that final wicket lost for Hornsby. West Penno were sent back in to bat but the game was quickly over as they finished on 0/68 off 14 overs to play Hornsby out of the game, and win the B1 trophy. B Reserve In B Reserve the top 2 ran away with it, and while Glenorie were perhaps out of their depth, the battle for the remaining 2 semi-final spots was incredibly tight with ARL and Sydney Lions finally prevailing. SENIOR COMPETITION REPORT 2016-17: Continued SKLPS and runners up West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook were comfortable in the semi-finals batting out the first day until the rain took care of the 2nd day. The battle between the finalists in the normal rounds finished a win a piece, so this was looking like a tight one. Put into bat West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook found themselves 2 down without troubling the score and 6 down for 11 runs SKLPS must have been thinking this was a stroll, eventually dismissing their opposition for just 44. West Pennant Hills had other ideas and took out the SKLPS opener for a duck and soon had SKLPS 4 down for 5 and 6 down for 28 before SKLPS passed the target and were dismissed for 73. There was time left and West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook came out to bat again, this time putting on 7-103 before declaring. At 3-2 it was backs to the wall for SKLPS, but they held on to take out the Premiership. The awards both went to players from teams who didn t make the final, so congratulations to Shane Cash of Hornsby who took out the batting award, with 468 runs at 84 from his 13 innings. Matthew McRobert of Berowra collects the bowling award with his 31 wickets at 9.87. C Grade There is no doubt that this was a batting competition with no less than 5 players exceeding 400 runs, 3 of them averaging around the 60 mark. As you might expect, only 6 bowlers took 20 or more wickets. As with B Reserve, the C Grade awards both went to players from teams who didn t make the final, so congratulations to Tom Calloway of St Ives Wahroonga who took out the batting award, with 699 runs at 63.55 from his 14 innings (St Ives will be hoping that Tom follows Matt Horvatt into A Grade, who was similarly dominant in C Grade a few seasons ago). Khalid Bakhshi of Hornsby collects the bowling award with his 25 wickets at 16.64. Thanks to West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook who provided the below report for the season: The C1 grade competition was tightly contested throughout the season, with probably only Hornsby and Mt Colah falling out of Finals contention midway through the season. Defending premiers West Pennant Hills- Cherrybrook finished as minor premiers, largely helped by picking up the only outright win gained within the grade all season. They played 4th placed Sydney Lions in the first semi-final. WPHC batted first on a very slow Les Shore #2 outfield, and were untroubled to bat through the day to finish on 4/150. The stand-out performance was by Mat Marsden who batted through the entire 75 overs to finish on 64 not out. Day 2 was washed out, so WPHC marched into their 4th consecutive final in this grade. In the other semi final, 2nd placed Normanhurst-Warrawee played Berowra at Normanhurst. Berowra were sent in and were looking in trouble at 8/98, but a fighting lower order resistance led by Conrad Nitzsche (60*) enabled Berowra to reach a competitive 193 at the close. Again, day 2 was washed out so Normanhurst progressed to the Final. The Final between WPHC and Normanhurst was moved to Auluba Oval in the morning after Roseville Park was deemed unplayable. Normanhurst had boasted 2 wins against the minor premiers throughout the season so were confident when sent in to bat. At 3/112, Normanhurst were in charge but a stunning outfield catch to dismiss top-scorer Joshua Hayes for 39 turned proceedings on their head and WPHC stormed back taking the final 7 wickets for just 19 runs, dismissing Normanhurst for 131. Semonn Oleksyn (3/12) and Mat Marsden (3/18) were the chief destroyers. WPHC chased cautiously and seemed to always have the upper-hand, firstly at 1/42 then 3/84. However another middle order collapse was engineered by the new ball that saw WPHC stumble to 8/109. WPH s lower order managed to hold their nerve and steer WPHC home by 2 wickets and successfully defend their premiership, and raise the Hornsby Theatre Cup for the 3rd time in 4 years. C Reserve In one of only 2 semi-finals to achieve a result on the first day, 2nd placed Normanhurst Warrawee were put in to bat by 3rd placed Kissing Point and while the openers put on a relatively untroubled 27, they were the only members of the Normanhurst Warrawee team to score more than 5 as they were skittled for 56 inside 35 overs, Michael Haines taking 6-24 in the process. Kissing Point similarly made a decent start putting on an untroubled 22 before losing both openers in quick succession and 5 wickets with only a further 4 runs added. They were still a run short of victory at 9 down but Prasanna Sivanathan saw them home. In the grand final St Ives could only manage to put on 86 in tricky batting conditions, Jude D Silva the pick of the bowlers taking 4-10 off 7 overs. St Ives must have been confident as a steady flow of wickets saw Kissing Point on the ropes 6-26 and then 9-44 with Dean Thomson doing the majority of the damage picking up 5-34 off his 18 overs. The tail wagged again and they were within 7 of the target when they lost their final wicket. Kissing Point must have thought that they were back in it as St Ives limped to 8-58 before old heads Dean Thomson and Gary Boyd stabilised the innings and at 9-99 Kissing Point finally shook hands to concede a hard 29

Congratulations to Ghume Strydom of St Ives Wahroonga who took out the batting for the grade, making 501 at 45.55 that included a duck in the final. Sumit Ram, another finalist, this time for Kissing Point takes the bowling with 31 wickets at 16. Sumit was well watched in the final with defence the key to restricting him to just 1 wicket across the innings. Thanks to St Ives Wahroonga for the following report of the Grand Final: On arrival at Thornleigh there was still a lot of water on the ground. Kissing Point however worked hard and decided to use blowers and sponges to soak up the water on the ground and they even travelled to Bunnings to pick up the sawdust. After an hour the umpires approved start of play. Despite losing the toss, St Ives were put in to bat, which would have also been the choice had they won it. It was a very scrappy day for the bat with the balls swinging both ways and cutting through the St Ives line up in 40 overs, finding themselves all out for 86 with Mitul Dholakia top scoring with a quick fire 18. We would also like to welcome Dean Thomson and Ruan Jordaan to the infamous duck club! It was most definatley a sign that day 1 was a bowlers day. The opposition proved difficult with the ball and their support made things difficult out in the middle. At the change of innings, the Saints came together and were determined to lift and give nothing for free. The field was filled with talk and encouragement. We decided to run with only 3 bowlers since they were bowling consistently and giving nothing, and just like the game of domino s the wickets followed each other. Considering we only scored 86, we banded to leave them 5/24 at stumps, with wicket keeper Nick Briffa taking some great catches, Tom Palm 1/7 (7) and Gary Boyd 1/2 (4) dominating with the ball. Dean Thompson also chipped in scalping 3/9 (11) in quick succession. A huge shoutout to all those who came out to support us. big mentions to Shivank Bargoti, Graeme Terry, Duncan Phillip Maher, Sam Whiteley, Michael Benjamin, and our fearless leader looking all dapper, Gavin Wingfield who were huge in lifting the boys and assisting with ground, scoring and updating the club! (Sorry if I missed anyone) After a great finish to the first day, we needed to keep moving with the momentum on day 2 to take out the first innings. It didn t take long for the boys to take down the middle order batters but with the Kissing Point final wicket partnership at the crease needing to make 42 to take the first innings, we knew they wouldn t go out easy. It was one of those either just win or just miss it situations as they were eventually only 7 runs required to take first innings. With that being said, the Saints banded together and Ruan Jordan bowling the stumps out of the ground cementing the first innings for the Saints. With a huge lead of 6 runs, we knew batting all day would allow us to claim the victory. Unfortunately the batters didn t hang around long again, with the ball moving and pitch assisting the fielding team we were in a bit of hot water. Fortunately Guy Finch, Dean Thomson and Gary Boyd held some solid time out in the middle, forcing Kissing Point to accept defeat early with the score on 9-99 having been 8-58 a little earlier. C3 Grade The C3 competition was a lot tighter than it looked with only Thornleigh cast adrift and had the weather not prevented St Ives from taking out West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook in round 13 they could have been minor Premiers, while the other members of the top 4, and indeed 5th placed Beecroft and 6th placed Kissing Point also having every right to feel that had the final 2 rounds not been affected by the weather, they could have made the finals or finished higher. As it turned out West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook finished as minor premiers and were well on top (146) of 4th placed Hornsby (6-25) when their 2nd day of the semi-final was washed out. In the other semi-final 2nd placed St Ives came up against a strong Castle Hill RSL team, with much respect between the 2 teams. Castle Hill RSL s opening bowler was late to the ground and having won the toss still put St Ives in to bat. The bowling was unplayable with the ball swinging and cutting at pace and St Ives were 6-16 before rallying to 58 when they lost their 8th, 9th and 10th wickets. It was one of only 2 semi-finals in the association to have a result as Castle Hill reached 3-89 despite some strong bowling and tight fielding. In the final Shanuka Liyanaaracchchi was back opening the bowling but Castle Hill RSL had learned that Rushanth Kumaranathan was lethal with the new ball, the tall swing bowler who had destroyed the St Ives top order with great seam position, and kept his place as number 2 in the attack. Rushanth (3-11 off 12.3) picked up the first wicket and the second quickly followed for pace man Shanuka with West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook reduced to 2-6. There was some resistance as the batmen marshalled the bowlers and reached 57 before a run out saw them having to build again. At 4-81 West Pennant Hills will have thought that they were well in the game and even after being dismissed for 105 in 70 overs must have thought that the total was defendable. Dismissing the opener for a duck and quickly having Castle Hill 2-2 and then 3-15, they must 30
SENIOR COMPETITION REPORT 2016-17: Continued have thought that Castle Hill RSL might fold, but with Usman Paracha at the crease and skipper Carl Spears eventually joining him with the score 4-68, the pair stabilised the innings and took them past the total. Usman top scored with 67, more than half the team total, when he was dismissed at 124, but Carl who was eventually run out by his number 9 Thisal De Silva had guided his team to 180. With Castle Hill all out for 185, 80 runs ahead, West Pennant Hills decided to have another go, and why not with nothing to lose. Castle Hill are hard to score against until the ball is old and with the pace and skill of the openers, it was unfortunately a losing battle, not assisted by 3 run-outs, but when you have to score fast and boundaries are hard to come by you have to take those risks. West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook were finally beaten with the score 8-50 off 16 overs, still 30 runs short of forcing Castle Hill RSL to bat again. Congratulations to Charith Liyanaaracchchi of Castle Hill RSL, the less mentioned above brother of Shanuka who may not be as quick, but does have the ability to get late swing which, at this level of the game, is just as lethal to the batsmen. Juan Becker of Kenhurst and Upper Hills, who started the season strongly took out the batting with 438 runs at 39.82. No other batsman managed to score more than 400 runs or average more than 30, but that is hardly surprising given the level of knowledge and experience across the teams in this grade this time around. It may come as a surprise that only 5 bowlers took more than 25 wickets but that also shows the depth of involvement in the grade. D Grade This was the first of 2x 6 team competitions and Glenorie and Berowra were cast adrift early in the New Year as the top 4 fought it out for positions. Asquith Rugby League who had not won a game in C2 the previous season and had dropped to C3 only to not win a game in the first 4 this season, were dropped to D Grade. Despite losing their first game in D1, I was unsure that it was the right thing to do as the main thing this team lacked was confidence. Sure enough, once they had won their first, they proceeded all the way to Premiers winning the grand final against minor premiers St Ives Wahroonga. It could have been a different outcome as the final was moved, at the recommendation of the local Hills Council from Les Shore 1 to Les Shore 2. Les Shore 1 had only been half mowed and Les Shore 2 was prepared and ready for the 2 days of play. On arrival at the ground on day 1, the pitch was deemed too wet and unplayable, and a decision was made to suspend play and come back on the 2nd day to get the game played. The executive officer and I were called on the morning of the 2nd day with the news that the ground was being used by an alternate hirer, not just Les Shore 2, but 1 as well! The council had somehow double booked the ground in error. All we had left across the entire association was John Holland Reserve just around the corner, and both teams and umpires were sent to the ground with the game only delayed by 15 minutes. There are no one day matches in a grand final so ARL, on winning the toss, put minor premiers St Ives in to bat. St Ives batted for 53 overs but could only put on 83 runs as the outfield was damp with long grass and incredibly slow. Alex Johnson was the pick of the bowlers with 3-8 off his 8 overs. There were still plenty of overs to go and despite picking up the early wicket of Louis Cummings with the score on just 6, ARL powered ahead lead by Joshua Phillipson with an unbeaten 61 of the 85 runs required, and the game over in 24 overs. Joshua was also the star of the semi-final with another unbeaten 73 giving him season figures of 237 at 59.25 from 6 innings. He was a late recruit joining the association in round 8, and only just qualified for the final with 4 matches, although had the weather not prevailed I am sure there would have been more. Congratulations to Pratah Sinnetamby of West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook who took out the batting award with 370 runs at 37 from his 12 innings. Scott Murray of St Ives Wahroonga couldn t find a breakthrough in the grand final, but with 33 wickets at 10.3 he takes out the bowling award. Special mention to Wayne Norrish who was the only batsman in the grade to exceed 400 runs with 63x 4s and 4x 6s for the season. D Reserve D Reserve was another 6 team competition. Kenthurst and Upper Hills were the unfortunate team to finish bottom on quotient, but it wasn t without a lot of effort and 4 wins along the way. Kissing Point also managed 4 wins and Hornsby in 3rd were only one outright win ahead of them. The teams in D2 have continued to improve and while defending premiers St Ives Wahroonga appeared to run away by 20 points they still lost 2 matches along the way and were only marginal favourites going into the final. Following some ding dong battles and fearing that Hornsby would be at full strength St Ives were keen to avoid Hornsby in the semi-final. With the wash outs, it turned out to be a battle of the top 2 in the final. Having won the toss, Dave Cooper opened the bowling for St Ives and removed the 2 openers before the first change pair of Peter Blackmore and John Coote set about the middle order with a devastating spell reducing Castle Hill RSL from 2-22 to 7-33. 31
SENIOR COMPETITION REPORT 2016-17: Continued The tail wagged assisted by Mr Extras as Castle Hill reached 94. Castle Hill RSL were never a team to hang around and having been put into bat by St Ives it was a sharp catch that did for one of the top 2 batsmen in the grade, Justin Ward. St Ives set about the chase, and at 2-13 Castle Hill RSL will have felt that they were in with a chance. Peter Blackmore, Dave Cooper and Michael Mckeown set about building a winning innings and despite Blackmore being dismissed with the score on 61 the damage was done. Cooper had been suffering with the flu and once the runs were on the board retired hurt. Without Coopers guidance the wickets fell reasonably steadily and St Ives eventually declared their innings on 190. Taking away the top 3 scorers and extras, the other 7 St Ives players managed only 19 between them, 2 less than the 21 that Castle Hill RSL managed without their top 3 scorers and extras. Castle Hill had nothing to lose and the spirit and friendship between the 2 teams was incredibly good, so why not go out and have a hit. Unfortunately for them they were dismissed for 80, but they had a decent go. Congratulations to St Ives Wahroonga who have won the D Reserve premiership for 3 years in a row despite moving the key players from the team up to higher grades. I was at the game for a short time and the teams sat together and laughed and joked about the individual and team performances which was great to see. Dave Cooper and Justin Ward had been in a tight battle for the batting award but they still shook hands and congratulated each other at the end of the day, and Justin showed genuine concern for Dave s health. No one was more disappointed that Justin came up short than those friends of Dave who will forever more hear about how Dave won the batting award. So Congratulations to Dave Cooper who as mentioned takes out the batting award with 583 at 53. Castle Hill RSL had 3 of the top 5 highest run scorers in the grade and St Ives Wahroonga had the other 2. William White, St Ives Wahroonga captain, takes out the bowling with 29 wickets at 10.97 Club Championship In the overall club competition, congratulations go to West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook who recovered from their disappointment of being pipped to the post in the Club Championship last season by just 0.005 points to overcome last seasons Club Champions Normanhurst Warrawee. St Ives Wahroonga were a close 3rd as they continue to strengthen across the grades. The Wrap Credit goes as always to the clubs and their players for playing the fabulous game in great spirit throughout the season. I would like to thank the clubs and registrars for their efforts in complying with the rules this season; the SCC only had a few incidents and disputes to deal with and I don t believe we handed out any financial penalties. We had some really tight competitions across most of the grades this season and I thank clubs for assisting in ensuring that players are in the correct grades. I had a lot of feedback from many players, telling me that they have really enjoyed the tight competitions and found them challenging. Going into the final few rounds in the knowledge that almost any team could still make the final, and only one or two were at that point guaranteed a spot increases our enjoyment of the game, the fact that so many missed out on the opportunity to battle to the end due to the weather is a dampener, but still all players will have some great memories from the season. Running the competition is very much a team effort and I would like to extend my thanks to the SCC members, John Klingberg, Roger Friend, Brad Rayner, and Carl Spears who all backed up from last season, and also to Craig Menzies, our Executive Officer, who assisted with the draw, ratings and audits. The committee have given up countless hours throughout the season as there is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes to ensure that everything runs smoothly and our competitions are as evenly contested as possible. This season was particularly tough given the weather conditions. We should also thank the recreational staff of the three Councils who have again prepared some decent wickets for us this season, battling the weather. The fact that we managed to get a game on turf for the grand final was an incredible achievement, and I sincerely thank them. Our thanks are also extended to the Umpires Association and HKHDCA executive who have given us support and helped to make 2016-17 a successful season. 2017-18 will provide new challenges with a redraft of the MCC Laws and a few additions in there to challenge us. One final note, you will notice that I have included reports from the winners of the grand final where provided, so have your notebooks at the ready if you are lucky enough to be in a 2017-18 grand final. A GRADE FINAL Venue: Berowra Oval Umpires: Geoff Hasler and Steve Hill The fact that this game was played was in no small way due to the efforts of the WPHC players in covering the pitch area from Wednesday night onwards and the totally dedicated commitment of groundsman, Trent Allen, who worked tirelessly to get us on to the pitch. This match proved to be one of the most exciting, see sawing contests of the past fifteen years or more and generated incredible involvement from a very vocal crowd of supporters from both camps. The result was a DRAW.but what a draw it was. Saturday at 11.00am presented the participants with a very muddy, damp square which was the barrier to an immediate start, in fact, despite the hard work of the groundman and primarily the WPHC players and supporters, we were unable to commence play until 4:00pm with a 30 over minimum requirement. The toss, a very important factor, was won by James Makin, captain of the WPHC team, and he had little hesitation in inviting Berowra to bat, not too surprising a decision given the circumstances. The very experienced Berowra opening pair of Grant (Gronk) Reid and Dave (Bub) Steptoe took on the opening attack led by Matt Jobson and Riley Miedler, on a deck that provided a few bruises for the batsmen, with steep but slowish bounce when pitched short of a length, but came on to the bat when pitched up. It took some 70 minutes and 17 overs for the opening partnership to be broken by fast bowler Scott Henderson having Steptoe caught in the cordon for 22, in an opening stand of 29. Another half hour saw the Gronk dismissed for a very patient 8 runs, and at stumps on Saturday, Patel and McNay had taken the score to 2/47. Sunday provided a bright sunny environment for cricket and play commenced on time at 11.00am with 90 overs (20 in the last hour) within which to achieve a result. Kushal Patel, Berowra s classy English import, was dismissed for 22, caught by Makin off the bowling of Paterson with the score at 72. WPHC spinner, Justin Paterson, had commenced his 21 over spell, which was to yield 7 wickets in an excellent display of slow bowling on a pitch that certainly encouraged the spinners. Paterson continued a spell from the 42nd over until the completion of the innings in the 74th over, constantly beating the bat, well supported by his WPHC fieldsmen. The remaining Berowra batsmen struggled with the spin until Joe Leighton decided to take on the bowling and scored a rapid fire 21 (two big 6 s) with the score being 8-121. The tail took the total to 135 from 72.4 overs, leaving the WPHC side 136 runs to get from a minimum of 45 overs (20 in the last hour). It is certainly worth noting the performance of Justin Paterson, who took 7-35 from his 21 overs (7 maidens), an exceptional spell from the left hander. WPHC openers, Phil Wurth and James Makin, two very contrasting players in approach, took the field on an improving pitch, but the task was never going to be simple given the very consistent Berowra bowling attack, spearheaded by Francois Perrin and Joe Leighton. An opening partnership of 64, with Wurth contributing 46 of these (seven 4 s and a six) set WPHC on the path to victory, with James Makin playing his captain s knock to perfection, accumulating around his partners. The Berowra spin twins, Kush Patel and A.J. Cook then came into their own, with Patel taking two quick wickets and the match was on. Connell and Robertson added a valuable 22 runs, and then, in the space of two balls, not Patel s best deliveries, two wickets fell to boundary catches and Berowra were very much back in the contest, well supported by a very vocal crowd, as were their opponents, relishing the close contest. Matt Jobson joined the reliable Makin and they added a further 26 runs, to bring their side within 17 runs of victory, with four wickets in hand. Makin followed with only two additional runs to the total, for a very well compiled 40, and the equation was 15 to win, three wickets to get. The bowling change by Berowra captain, Jack Smallhorn, had produced the break though, with Nick McNay bowling Makin, and Francois Perrin returning to the bowling crease in support. McNay struck again, bowling Nick Bennett, with the score at 8/127. Just nine runs required and two wickets, the atmosphere was electric, the umpires under pressure from the raucous crowd of supporters. Miedler was next to go, the score at 131. The hero of the WPHC bowling attack, Justin Paterson, joined Scott Henderson as the hope of the side. Perrin was given the task of the final over of the match, and with one ball remaining, four runs were required to take home the A Grade trophy. Paterson faced the final ball with Berowra placing nine men on the boundary. Hit down the ground for two, but no more and pandemonium was the outcome, with the Berowra boys celebrating their first A Grade premiership since the 2004/5 season. This final will be remembered for many, many years as the outcome was fluctuating throughout the match, the atmosphere electric and the crowd support, incredibly loud, long and lubricated. Congratulations to both teams in providing such a match, you deserve to be remembered for the fantastic contest. Technically, the match finished as a draw, with Berowra claiming the trophy as they finished the season as Minor Premiers. But what a draw it was! 38

HK&HDCA REPRESENTATIVE SECRETARY S REPORT 2016 / 17 The rebuilding continues, and the results whilst mixed, are showing a clear improvement. The Under 10 Foster Shield team played in the Semi Final, with the Under 13 Cawsey Shield and Under 14 Moore Shield teams playing in their Qualifying Finals. If we had converted 4 close games to wins, we would have finished fourth in the Shell Shield for the season. Again, in the seniors, there was no Durham Shield competition, as NSWDCA was unable to attract enough teams to compete. We did compete in the Telegraph Shield and Martin Shield competitions with the Martin Shield playing in the Qualifying Finals. The Presidents Cup teams results improved further on last season. The Under 11 Blue IDCA Cup team were the runners up in their competition. Overall we came third by average, first by aggregate in the Presidents Cup. HK&HDCA entered an Under 15 Peden Shield team this season, which included a number of talented young girls. This team will increase in strength as the development of young female players within HK&HDCA progresses. A number of changes were introduced into the HK&HDCA Representative program over the last few seasons. These changes are starting to take effect and are moving HK&HDCA back up near the top of the NSWDCA Shield and IDCA Presidents Cup competitions. Congratulations to Regan Bridgewater who won the Under 10 Foster Shield NSWDCA bowling award. Congratulations to Lachlan Shaw for selection in the NSW Magenta team for the School Sport Australia 15 & Under Boys National Championship. The following players were selected for the CNSW State Challenge Cup: Under 13 - Will McCarroll, Oliver Jennings and Patrick Xie Under 14 - Lachlan Shaw, Jack Nisbet, Jonathan Moran, Cory Miller, Yash Patel and William Coffey HK&HDCA also had a number of players selected for the CNSW Cricket Academy. They were: Under 13 - Cameron Tunks and William McFadden Under 14 - Oliver Jennings Under 15 - Corey Miller, Jack Nisbet, Jonathan Moran and Yash Patel Under 16 - Lachlan Shaw Without the all the hard work from club administrators, coaches and managers, Reps would not be as successful as it is. Club coaches develop players batting, bowling, keeping, catching, fielding and general team skills, which the Rep coaches can then build a team around. The Rep coaches do not have the time to devote to fine tuning a batsman or bowler, we rely on the club coaches or specialist coaches to fulfill this part of a player s development. Reps would not exist without the clubs, and the support they provide to their players and officials. The ongoing development of Reps is reliant on this continued support. So to all the club administrators, coaches and managers, thank you. I would like to thank all of the Umpires, especially Simon Moore who had the unenviable task of assigning Umpires to all of the games, and having to deal with last minute ground changes. 54th LIFE MEMBER OF HK&HDCA INDUCTED IN 2016 At the Association s Annual General Meeting held on Tuesday 26th July 2016 the meeting unanimously voted to elect Steve Wilson as the Association s 54th Life Member. Steve has been an active member of this Association ever since his relocation to the area in the late 1980s. He first started playing in our Association in the 1989/90 season for the Berowra Cricket Club and changed to the Hornsby Heights Cricket Club from the 1992/93 season as it was closer to home. Highlights of Steve s input to this Association include; He was an active member of the Hornsby Heights Cricket Club committee from 1992/93 to 1995/96. Appointed the inaugural Hornsby Heights Cricket Club Kanga Cricket Coordinator 1992/93 to 1995/96 Along with the Late Kim Solling from Hornsby RSL CC, initiated the merger of Hornsby Heights and Hornsby RSL Cricket Clubs into the now Hornsby District Cricket Club. Was appointed President of the new merged club for its inaugural season (1996/97). This first season of the new club required a softly softly approach to ensure both clubs were involved in a smooth transition, and Steve s inclusive manner as President was instrumental in overcoming any hurdles. Needless to say that the transition proved to be stress-free and the building blocks established in the first season under Steve s Presidency have borne fruit with a now very strong club in existence. For the 1999/2000 season Steve decided to hang up the boots and join the other side the umpires. He has undertaken his duties as an umpire in the same manner that he does with all his other roles with conviction and responsibility and has great respect among both players and fellow umpires. He has been umpiring now on and off for 18 years in this Association (with the occasional season in-between to play again and keep the physiotherapists busy). Appointed HK&HDCA Senior Competition Committee Secretary 2004/05 to 2010/11 (7 seasons). Steve was always looking for ways to improve the competition and was a great pioneer of change during his time as SCC Secretary - highlights included; - Establishing the U19s Colt competition - Introducing covers for all our turf grounds - Always ensuring the full season draw was completed prior to the commencement of the competition - Establishing the Sunday Competition - Occasional Sunday play for our senior astro-turf grades to ensure access to better grounds - Instigating the pre-season T20 competition - Establishing the 10 tier player ratings system - With great foresight trialling the MyCricket software before it was compulsory for all Associations - Coordinating many local rule changes that improved the organisation and running of the afternoon competitions - Coordinating the rewrite of the local rules handbook into a much more consistent and logical document (the format of which is still currently being used) Apart from these highlights, Steve always ran a very efficient SCC and always emphasised that they were a team working for the Association and for the betterment of the competitions. Steve has always listened to both sides of issues and has always promoted arguments for the best outcome for the Association, without any personal or home club bias. Appointed Umpires Secretary 2011/12 to current (5 years) to Hornsby Ku-ring-gai & Hills District Cricket Umpires Association. In this role Steve coordinates the umpire appointments to the bulk of all relevant HK&HDCA matches (in 2015/16 there were over 250 appointments). Member of the HK&HDCA Executive 2005/06 to 2014/15 (10 years). Steve was always an active contributor to the Executive meetings and his views were always highly regarded. As at the end of the 2015/16 season Steve has umpired in over 320 games in our Association, making him one of the three most experienced umpire s in our history. 63
ROSS TURNER CUP SUNDAY 25 SEPTEMBER 2016 TURRAMURRA OVAL HK&HDCA s showcase junior representative match called the Ross Turner Cup (RTC) has been held since 1998-99 and features the outstanding players in our district from the U/15 age group and below. The annual contest was originated by Tom Richmond, OAM, Life Member and Patron of both HK&HDCA and HKHDCCA, who passed the responsibility to Bruce Wood, President, Coaches Association in 2010-11. The previous 18 RTC matches have unearthed some outstanding cricketers over the years, with an amazing 24 players graduating to play First Grade cricket in Sydney. D Souza 3/4) The Cup is named in honour of Ross Turner, one of our Association s most famous products, who became Northern District s most successful captain, winning two First Grade premierships. Ross worked for Cricket NSW and Cricket Australia, pioneering development activities, before working for the International Cricket Council (ICC) in the development of cricket in Bangladesh, China, Malaysia, Afghanistan and India. HKHDCCA appointed two emerging coaches for this 19th RTC match Hame Fullagar (West) and Nick Miller (East), who did a terrific job. The RTC captains were Jordy Hayes (West) and Joe Hiley (East). Experienced umpires Bruce Wood and Geoff Hasler were appointed to officiate their 11th RTC match. GLENN HOURIGAN CUP SUNDAY, 25 SEPTEMBER 2016 KARUAH PARK HK&HDCA s showcase junior representative match called the Glenn Hourigan Cup (GHC) has been held since 2003-04 and features the outstanding players in our district from the U/13 age group and below. The 14th annual East v. West GHC contest was held on Sunday, 25th September 2016 at Karuah Park, Turramurra. The GHC T20 matches were played a fortnight earlier on Sunday, 11th September 2016 at Montview Oval, Hornsby Heights, with 4 teams of 12 boys playing two exciting T20 matches, which included a Super Over after a Tied result. The Marsh T20 team won the final congratulations to Coach - Dhruva Thorat and Captain - Patrick Xie. HKHDCCA provided opportunities for some young coaches with Shivraj Rana & Dhruva Thorat (East) and Riley Behlevanas & Rashad Rizme (West) coaching the GHC teams. All four lads guided their teams very impressively. Scott Reid and Alf James OAM enjoyed umpiring this GHC match together for the first time.
