SEPTEMBER 1999 TRI - LAKES R/C FLYING CLUB MEETING MINUTES AUGUST 10, 1999 President John woods opened the meeting at 7:40 PM at ROCKY TOP FIELD. All officers were present and a total of twenty members were present. The Minutes from the July meeting were approved as written in the August Newsletter. We have one scheduled Fun Fly left and keep your fingers crossed that it has good weather (we are due a break). Time to think about awards for 1999. Who gets the Top Gun trophy, or the most crashes award, or the mad inventor award, or the hard luck award, or the most helpful certificate, or the Combat trophy, best junior and/or senior award or most improved flyer award, etc. B etween now and November give me your ideas on what awards should be given and who 1 Nick and Jerry Kepler were guests. Committee Reports: None. Old Business: President John Woods advised the Club that AMA tapes on building and flying were not available to our club because they belong to a different AMA district. John Woods has ordered Club T-shirts for all that had signed up for them. Anyone else that wants one needed to sign up after the meeting. The price is $12.25 each for sizes up to XL. John has paid a 50% deposit for the shirts so he would like to be reimbursed as soon as possible. It should be two to three weeks before the shirts are ready to pick up. John Woods called Woody Mitchell, who runs horses on the property, to remind him of our meeting. Woody declined the invitation. Nothing further has transpired in this area since the report in the August Newsletter. (Continued on page 2)
THE PRESIDENT S CORNER Like to thank all those members who were able to survive the extreme heat last month and stay for the Club's meeting. It felt like 100 degrees + with the humidity about the same. Good turn out for the meeting. The Tee shirts are in and came out really nice. I would like to thank Omni products for a quality job and their quick turn around. If you have any Screening needs, contact Grant at Omni Products -- 334-3007. If you haven't picked up your shirt(s) yet see me at the field or give me a call. The cost is $12.25 each. Combat flying has been exhilarating the last couple weeks. I finally got a couple "kills" and it feels a lot better than some other pilot whacking your tail off -- you kind of take it personal. Of course the others are extremely boastful if they get lucky and cut your tail off. Ray keeps hitting Don and Don ends up in the trees. He is an expert at retrieval of aircraft in trees above sixtyfive feet. Just a reminder to all the new members to make sure you pick up your frequency pin as soon as you arrive at the flying field so that there are no mishaps because of interference with a channel already in use. Also, anyone using the field must be a current AMA member if they are a guest or a Club member. We have an "Introductory Pilot Program" that provides insurance to the non-ama member so they may try out R/C flying and have liability insurance. Congratulations to Ian Pietz for his recent solo flight -- good job! Happy Landings... John ( Meeting Minutes Continued from page 1 ) Don Livermore reported on the Combat situation. There are now five Battle Floyds and Fun Bats mixing it up over the field. Don will order more Battle Floyds and asked that anyone wanting one to give him your name and $20 for each plane after the meeting. Joe Donavant said he should be able to set the wooden poles for the safety fence sometime during August. The fence will be set the same place as the current fence. He will let John Woods and Howard Shire know when he will set them so the old fence can be taken down. John Woods advised those mowing the lawn not to fill the gas tank to the top as it has a tendency to splash out if over full. It was also suggested that a tarp be rigged on the back of the trailer to protect the mowers from the sun, rain and dust. Howard will get a tarp for this purpose. New Business : President John Woods awarded Mike Anderson his SOLO CERTIFICATE. Ken Adams said it was time to update the Club frequency list. So let him know how many transmitters and receivers you have on each channel. Newer members need to give Ken a complete list of their Tx s and Rx s. Members that have reported before just need to let him know of the changes. All combat pilots should let him know what channel(s) you are using for combat. Ken s phone number is 417 337-9691, e-mail kailman@aol.com or drop him a note at 209 Eric Dr., Kirbyville, MO 65679. John Woods asked if there was much demand for Byron fuels. The consensus was that since Byron has discontinued the airplane kit business they would probably eventually discontinue their fuel business. Gary Metzger said he thought Cool Power had the best fuels. He will see what kind of deal the Club can get on case lots of both 2-stroke and 4-stroke fuels and report back to the Club. John also advised the Club members, especially the new members, that we still get a 10% discount on (Continued on page 3) 2
BLACKSHEEP FLOAT FLY By Don Johnson August 7th arrived with strong gusts blowing over the surface of Springfield Lake. Several people had showed up and in the tradition of the theater the show must go on. According to a report by Herman Hanebrink, there was not one plane that did not crash during the day. The wind even cartwheeled a Lazy Bee several times across the lake. The one Fun Float Fly event was run and winners were determined but not one plane fully completed the course. Erv Rohde gave it a go with the inevitable results, but Herman thought it would be better to wait for another day. By mid afternoon everyone that was still at the lake was just watching the wind and swapping tales. Sunday turned out to be a much better day with a light breeze. The turn out didn t seem as heavy as in the past, probably because of the wind the day before. But there were quite a few neat airplanes and the flying was great - no problem getting a frequency pin when you were ready to fly. Herman was back on Sunday and flew his Eagle 2 (?). The writer brought his Heinkle 31 for its first public flights and was awarded a couple of free raffle tickets for the smallest scale plane or the only electric. All three of our Club members received a raffle prize. After three fairly good flights and lunch at the BlackSheep Grill it was time to head home after an enjoyable day. If you haven't participated in this Float Fly, put some floats on a plane and attend next year s event, you ll be glad you did. ( Meeting Minutes Continued from page 2 ) airplane kits and supplies at T.P.A. Hobby Center in Hollister. Program : Mike Bilyk showed his Lite Machine Helicopter that takes a.06 engine. Neat looking little machine but has not flown yet. *** Curt Krause had a new ARF Cap 232 in yellow with red trim. He said it went together great and had complete hardware and only cost $200. It is a 40 size but he will use a 51 in it. *** There was flying before the meeting, including a five plane combat won by who knows. The meeting Adjourned at 8:25 PM FROM SAFETY OFFICER ERV ROHDE PREFLIGHT CHECKLIST After you get to the field, get your clothes (FREQUENCY) pin and range check your radio. But there should be more. How about your propeller, engine, landing gear, fuselage, rudder, elevator and wing? You re checking for nicks, cracks and breaks; are your hinges, engine and servos tight? Don't say I should have! There is a house west of the main gate. We SHOULD NOT fly near it. If we don't fly west of the storage shed, there should be no problem. I have been in this club since 1991; this is the 6th field. Lets do it right and not lose this field. Erv. SAFETY RULES AND REGULATIONS A monthly review of your Club s Safety Rules Nice looking PBY taxiing out for take-off at Springfield Lake, 12. When several aircraft are flying a spotter should be used to warn the pilot of possible collision with other aircraft, other aircraft landing or other field mishaps that may endanger the pilot. 13. Pilots must announce that they are going to be landing and taking off to the other pilots on the field. 3
