Cherokee County Clover Connection APRIL 2017 4-H Teen & Adult Leaders Meeting April 4 th Where: Cherokee County Extension Office Time: Teens @ 4:30PM & Adults @ 6:00PM Who is invited? ALL TEENS, PARENTS, AND ADULT VOLUNTEERS ARE INVITED Officers DO NOT forget you are expected to be in attendance at all meetings. Upon missing your third meeting you will be replaced on the officer team. All summer camp committee members; please be prepared to give a committee report at each meeting. Summer camp committee members come early; we will have a camp planning meeting starting @ 4:30PM. SMALL ANIMAL CLUB MEETING Where: Cherokee County Extension Office When: April 4 th at 7:15PM THE TURTLES ARE HERE!!!! Annual Cherokee County Turtle Race May 20, 2017 Adopt a turtle and get a chance to win some CASH & PRIZES! Make a $5 contribution to the 4-H program and get a chance to win one of 10 prizes. Your $5 will adopt a number on a rubber turtle that will be dropped in the creek at the Tahlequah City Park on May 20 th at 11:00PM. The first 10 turtles that pass the finish line will get a prize. Prizes range from $500.00 cash to merchandise valued at $95 or more. All proceeds from the Turtle Race benefit the Cherokee County 4-H program. If 2,500 turtles are sold, the teen leaders get to dump an ice bucket on Carl at 4-H Summer Camp! What: Turtle Race When: May 20, 2017 Where: Tahlequah City Park Creek Time: Last Minute Adoptions 10:00AM to 10:30AM Race @ 11:00AM We will be selling turtle tickets at businesses around town on Saturday, April 15 th, and April 29 th. We would like any available 4-H member to come out and help with this event. If you are available on any or all days please call and let us know and we will assign you a location to help out with turtle sales. 918-456-6163

CHEROKEE COUNTY SPEECH CONTEST APRIL 6 th WOOHOOOOO PUBLIC SPEAKERS, you should be getting about polished and ready to ROCK AND ROLL!! The County Speech contest is scheduled for April 6th at Keys School at 6:30PM. Consider arriving 15 minutes early to find your room and get settled. Don t forget all entries are due to the County Extension office no later than April 4 th. A flyer with more information is attached to the newsletter. NE DISTRICT CONTEST DAYS JUNE 1 st & 2 nd There is a Northeast District 4-H Contest Days scheduled for May 31 June 1. The Speech, Clover Quiz Bowl, Livestock Quiz Bowl, & Job Readiness Contest will be held at Kellyville High School and all other contests will be held at the Creek County Fairgrounds. Registration will begin at 8:30AM on both days and will start promptly at 9:00AM. You must pre-register at the Cherokee County Extension Office no later than May 19th. No late registration will be taken. Cost for each contest is $1.00, excluding the Food Showdown, $20/team. Skill-A-Thon and Consumer Judging cost will be $2 on the day of the event. 4-H SUMMER CAMP Registration due May 26th WOOHOOO, IT S ALMOST HERE. Camp is scheduled for Thursday, June 22 nd Sunday, June 25 th. We will once again be staying at Camp Tulakogee near Wagoner. We have a covered basketball court, a fully stocked canteen for snacks and drinks (BRING SNACK MONEY), 2 volleyball courts, softball diamond, archery, fishing dock, miniature golf course and an awesome pool with a big splash style slide. This is definitely the 4-H camp you don t want to miss!!!! Thanks to funds set aside through our county budget and fundraising, we are able to offer camp to the first 100 4-H members at $40 each or you can sell 20 turtle tickets for the Turtle Race and go to camp for FREE! After we fill the 100 slots any other members will have to pay the full price of $110 each. So please get your registration in early so you can take advantage of the lower cost. Remember if you still have 4-H cookbook money left, you can use your cookbook money to pay for camp as well. The $40 registration fee includes all your meals, a camp T-shirt and lodging. WHAT A DEAL! Junior Entry Deadline August 25 th All junior entries must be submitted online. SHOW PROJECTS If you are going to need help finding livestock projects please get with me as soon as possible. The buying season is well under way if you want projects specifically for the fall fairs. However, if you re looking at projects only for spring, goat and lamb buying season will start in late May and run through late October, heifers can be bought at any time, steers should be purchased anytime and hogs will start being purchased late September through November. POP TABS Guys it s April and pop tabs are rolling in, however we are still short of our goal. Cherokee County, are YOU UP FOR THE CHALLENGE? We have got to start promoting the pop tab program. Do we really want to tell them a county the size of Cherokee County can only collect a few hundred pounds? NO NO NO, I think not!! We have lots of time so let s GETRRR DONE!!! I hear that roller coaster calling my name!! Below is a list of current club standings. Way to go Small Animal Club! NED HORSE SHOW The NE District Horse Show is scheduled for May 5 th -7 th at the River Bend Arena in Inola, Ok. The show will consist of three days on the same weekend. Friday will open with hhalter and showmanship classes through the English classes. Saturday will begin with trail through reining and rranch ttrail and ranch riding. Sunday will feature the cattleranch classes, of boxing and roping along with timed roping classes and speed events. Office will open at 8:00 a.m. on Friday morning May 5; 7:00 a.m. on Saturday May 6; and 8:00 a.m. on Sunday May 7 th. The office will close at 4:00 p.m. on Friday May 5 th due to a scheduling issue with the facility; Saturday and Sunday the office will close at 8:00 p.m. (or 30 minutes after the completion of the show) Entry forms and more information can be picked up at the office. All entry forms are due back in the office no later than April 5 th. COUNTY RECORD BOOKS DUE: June 30 th Yes, it s the time of year many of you dread. The first of April means it s time to start getting those County Record Books completed. County Record books are due Friday, June 30th. We will provide a question and answer session after the leaders meeting on April 4 th. Please attend if you re having problems. If you cannot attend this date, give me a call and I will be happy to help you on an individual basis. Go ahead and mark your calendars now. We will be interviewing for county record books on July 18 th. Please help us by holding this date in your calendar, there will be no makeup interviews or phone interviews. STATE RECORD BOOKS APRIL 17th Don t forget State Record books will be due in the Extension Office no later than April 17th. If you are 14 years of age as of January 1 you are eligible to apply for state awards. There are several of you that had a really great 4-H year, make sure you take the time and effort to get these books filled out properly. If you need help, drop your books by the office and I will read through them and make suggestions. But please do this early! Information regarding State 4-H Record Books can be found at http://4h.okstate.edu/. 95 th State 4-H Roundup July 26 th - 28 th REGISTRATION DUE MAY 15 th. WOOHOOO I HOPE YOURE EXCITED, it s time to start getting roundup on the mind!!! So who can attend 4- H Roundup? Youth that have completed the 7 th grade or are 13 years of age are eligible to participate. Roundup is our state 4-H leadership conference. Youth participate in competitive events, leadership workshops and let s not forget those nightly dances. We stay on the campus of Oklahoma State University. This year with our tremendous fundraising efforts we will be able to offer Roundup at a VERY REDUCED PRICE! Roundup truly costs $151 dollars. However we have enough funds in the leaders account from fundraising that we can reduce the cost to $40 for the first 25 members that signup OR if you sell 20 turtle tickets you can go for FREE! Turtle tickets must be sold by May 18 th. DO NOT wait until the last minute or this event will be full! If we get the registration turned in early we will be able to stay in the student suites on campus and they ARE AWESOME. Every room has their own personal bathroom! WOOHOO, no community showers! The first night we will go to Eskimo Joes and then do an extracurricular activity of some sort. Wednesday morning Roundup activities will commence! Guys once again, we are doing the best to make this cheaper on each of you to attend, it s up to you to take advantage of this great opportunity.
