Sunrise is getting later and sunset earlier. Will October bring us a return to a normal weather pattern? Time will tell. Our lengthy September general meeting featured a wine and cheese social lead by Suzanne Timko and her committee. The presentation by Florida Fish and Wildlife officers Josh Greenier and Josh Lawrence was very interesting and informative. By now, you should have received a copy of the Speed and Manatee Zones in the county that Josh sent to us (if you didn t receive it, please let me know). I am pleased to announce that the proposed changes to the By-Laws were approved by the membership in an 87 yeah to 8 nay vote. Also, the 2016 Election Committee has announced that the candidates for office next year are: Commodore Joe Lindholm, Vice Commodore John Green, Rear Commodore Dee Cocchiola, Treasurer Linda Jaeger, Secretary Susan Moya, Co-Fleet Captains Mike Triano & Alan Hendry, Directors Bob Jaeger, Toni Mincin & Ray Oakes. During the October meeting, nominations will be accepted from the floor, and the vote will be taken in November. Page 3 Vice Commodore Joe Lindholm cjlindholm@ameritech.net 386-445-1793 Officers Josh Greenier and Josh Lawrence from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Division of Law Enforcement were at our September meeting to speak on boating safety, rules and regulations. The presentations were very informative and the manatee information should help us all better understand the importance of compliance. Also, our September meeting carried a wine and cheese theme. Suzanne & Mike Timko were the leads and the event was a huge success. Great job to Suzanne & Mike and their volunteers: Ken Miller, Judy O Neill, Jeanne Meyer, Jack Cohen, Dottie Schamis, Carol Kilduff, Dee Cocchiola and Linda Jaeger. The FBYC golf outing originally scheduled for September 10 th was rescheduled for Thursday, October 8 th at 2:00 PM at the Pine Lakes Golf Course. John Green is the lead. The cost is $20 per golfer and there will be a social event to follow. There will not be another general meeting to sign up, so if you are interested in participating please contact John at 517-6760 or Jag50@bellsouth.net. donate. Page 5 Mike Triano and Eddie Uribe, Fleet Captains A big THANK YOU goes out to former Fleet Captain Chris Nelson for leading 41 members of the FBYC on the Astor Pontoon boat trip. He even found Silver Glenn Springs, all the way across Lake George!! The trip was a huge success and the weather could not have been better. Marsha and Russ have the lead for the October trip to New Smyrna Marina. Marsha has reserved slips for October 16, 17, 18 and leaving on the 19 th. Please contact her at (barryjones143@yahoo.com) if you are coming by boat and have not signed up for the trip. There are many restaurants to go to on Sat- urday the 17 th. Those of you coming just for dinner be sure to stop by the boats to make arrangements for dinner and give us boaters a ride. The Night of Lights in St. Augustine will be Saturday, November 21. Toni and Bob Mincin have the lead for this Maritime event. Toni has reserved slips for November 20, 21 and leaving on the 22 nd, contact her if you have not signed up for this great holiday weekend. Due to the large crowds that attend this event, getting us all into a restaurant would be impossible. The FBYC boaters will supply food and snacks at the marina; just bring your own drinks and we will supply the rest. This is going to be a great event. I have heard from many of our boaters that they want to have more RAFT UPS. At last month s general meeting I suggested another Raft Up before the end of the year. I suggested the following dates: Thursday, October 29 th ; Friday, October 30 th ; or Thursday, November 5 th. I asked that you email or call me with the date that would work best for you!!!

Page 6 Len Dignard, PC During our general membership meeting on September 17, as the lead for the By-Laws Committee, I was remiss in not mentioning and thanking the club members who provided support and input to the By-Laws rewrite. All the team members volunteered their time and energy into what was presented that evening. Each put significant time and effort into developing the proposed changes to the By-Laws that were presented and voted on by you, the membership. I would like to publicly thank Past Commodores Greg Hansen, Rich Franco and Randy Meyer, along with, Past Board Director Marsha Barry for their insights and reflections of past experiences that resulted in the final product. Thank you, to all of you, for stepping up to the challenge. Did you know that Danielle Pierro, one of our own, was nominated and voted in as the Flagler Business Woman of the Year on Monday September 21 st by the Flagler Business Women s Organiza- tion? The Flagler Business Women s Organization is a non-profit, com- munity-based, women s organization, committed to supporting women of all ages in achieving professional and personal goals through education, training and scholarships. Each year the organization solicits and ac- cepts nominations of women from within the Flagler business com- munity. The Woman of the Year Award is in recognition of their professional achievements, volunteerism, and dedication to the betterment of women in the Flagler business arena. Danielle and her husband Mark, both retired law enforce officers from New York, joined the FBYC in April 2013. She has been involved in the local business community for approximately two years and has already made a huge splash. Please join me in congratulating Danielle on her personal achievement and her recognition as Flagler Business Woman of the Year! Continued next Page

Page 7 The Kill Switch Your boat s emergency stop can save your life Many boats under 35 feet have a kill switch. When pulled out, this spring-loaded pin completes a circuit and keeps your engine running. A small clip pushes under the switch to hold it open. This clip is attached to a lanyard that should be attached somewhere on the boat operator s body. Usually a flexible line coiled like a spring, the lanyard allows the operator reasonable movement. If the operator falls off the seat or into the water, the clip pulls out, the pin closes and the engine shuts down. If your boat doesn t have a kill switch, you can retrofit your boat with various types of commercially available switches. Radio-activated switches allow the operator to wander a certain distance from the console before shutting the engine down; water-activated models shut down the boat if the operator goes overboard. An important piece of safety equipment, a kill switch can prevent man-overboard fatalities, providing it s used. All too often, however, the lanyard and clip are attached to the instrument panel, while the other end hangs unattached. This renders the kill switch useless. The second-worst thing to falling overboard is falling overboard and watching your boat sail away. Be sure to have a kill switch on board and use it faithfully. As seen in the USPS Compass Vol. 9 #6 Continued next Page
