Legacy Honorees 2018 Bringing Communities Together Through Dragon Boating As we begin the 24th annual Canada Dry Victoria festival, we would like to thank four exceptional people and one organization for their years of dedication, leadership, commitment and enthusiasm in growing the sport of dragon boating. We held the 2018 Summer Solstice Community Feast at this event we had the opportunity to celebrate by inducting them as Honourary Life Members of the Victoria Dragon Boat Society. Chuck Woods & Ian Kennel Team Gorging Dragons founding members Gorging Dragons This first award is to a team that started in 1996 and a few friends were interested and decided to give it a try. The two friends were Chuck Woods & Ian Kennel, encouraged by another friend Ruby she had done some paddling in Vancouver. That year the team was born, they started their paddling experiences at the Victoria Canoe & Kayak Club on Tillicum and Gorge and later Gorge & Rowing Club (now the Fairway Gorge Paddling Club). Both Chuck & Ian believed in giving back Gorging Dragons lead in the community of paddling by becoming coaches for upcoming teams, and Gorging Dragons crew helped developed training manuals, imputed in the creating of the club boats Millenniums. Gorging Dragons was the beating heart of the start of the Gorge Festival in Selkirk waterway and the race crew in Victoria. The phrase Attention Paddlers We Have Alignment GO was the voice of Ian Kennel for many years at the Victoria & Gorge Races. Mike Fox Volunteer & Victoria Dragon Boat Site Manager Mike Retired from a business career in information technology at the end of 2000. Coincidently he was introduced to Dragon boat by wife Joan who was a cancer survivor. The first grand dragon team in the gorge was formed from a core group of cancer survivor spouses. They formed a senior team and they campaigned for about 7 years, the St Keya Grand Dragon team average age at the time was over 70. Mike helped out with the annual transformation of the Ship Point parking lots into a festival site. Mike served as the site manager for the festival and worked on race programming for the festival. Mike s dedication to the sport Canada Dry Victoria Dragon Boat Festival Site Hours Friday 2pm-9pm Saturday 8am -9pm Sunday 8am 9pm 3 and his generous time to the festival development are truly treasured. This led to 6 really enjoyable years working with the Festival and all its great volunteers. Daniela Cubelic Volunteer/Past Board Chair & Member of the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival Society Daniela & Silk Road got involved as a volunteer & sponsor in 1995. As a volunteer and sponsor Daniela assisted the festival in a variety of capacities during the year and festival weekends. Daniela was an active director serving as co-chair of the organizing committee an also held the a variety of roles including vice-chair & chair of the festival board for two seasons 2009/2010 and continued as an active board director until stepping down in 2012. Daniela had a vision in her mind of what the Dragon boat was all about the Chinese community in Victoria is the Oldest in Canada, and holds a special place in our country s history and in our community. To me, the Victoria Dragon Boat Greater Victoria as well as visitors from Canada and the US in the spirit of celebration, healthy competition and camaraderie. It brings together individuals from diverse backgrounds, offers sport that is accessible to many and also a wonderful fundraiser for the BC Cancer Foundation. Tom Arnold Competitive Paddler/Coach/ President of Vancouver Island Paddling Club Tom his paddling career in Toronto in 1999 but soon ventured over to the other side of the country for warmer waters in 2003. Starting with his first island team, Precision Impossible, for a year and then jumping onto the Gorging Dragons. Tom s paddling life flourished and continued the Gorging Dragons vision of giving back. The competitive nature of Tom has him appearing personally at 4 Team Canada World Championships & he has taken the Gorging Dragons to 4 Club Crew World Championships. As a coach Tom has excelled at all levels of paddling personally, His vision for elite teams did not end with Premier levels, Tom started senior B & C level women and mixed level crews ages 60 and 70 plus years old teams and all excelling at a national and international level. Tom s vision for the sport continued with him co-founding the Vancouver Island paddling club in 2011 where he continues to serve as president.

A History of Dragon Boating 2018 Dragon Boat Racing was introduced to Victoria in 1994 The sport of dragon boat racing draws from the legend of Qu Yuan, a great Chinese poet and statesman who threw himself into the Miluo River upon hearing that his mother country had been defeated in battle. Local fishermen rushed to the spot where he drowned, slapping the water with paddles and banging drums to keep the river dragons away. People race dragon boats every year on the anniversary of his death, the fifth day of the fifth month, to commemorate this great poet and statesman. Dragon boat races are now held worldwide, and the ideals of Qu Yuan are still honoured through Taoist ceremonies, the spirit of the paddlers, and the invitation and involvement of the local community. Dragon boat racing was introduced to Victoria in 1994 as a demonstration of the sport for the Harbour Festival commemorating Hong Kong Day. The oneday demonstration races were such a success that by 1998, it had grown to accommodate 50 registered teams, including local and out-of-town paddlers. Over the years that followed the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival grew into a family and community event. Now the Festival has expanded to 3 days and 2 nights of free community activities and entertainment. There are live bands and cultural acts on the Coast Capital Entertainment Stage, activities and crafts in the family cultural tent, and tantalizing tastes in the Forbidden Village. About Dragon Boating 2018 Dragon boats are operated by 20 paddlers. Dragon boat paddlers sit facing forward in their boats, making it different to rowing. The leading pair sets the pace for the team, with all other paddlers striving to keep perfect time with their stroke. An efficient team will be so in synch, that as their paddles strike the water, they will actually lift their boat up slightly while they surge forward. The boat is steered by a stern who controls the boat with a steering oar mounted at the rear of the boat. The pace is called out by a drummer who sits facing the paddlers. Not all drummers drum, many call out the pace and words of motivation for the duration of the race. Some common paddling terms with definitions: Paddles Up means to get ready to paddle Take it Away to start paddling Let it Run stop paddling Hold the Boat place paddles in the water in order to stop the boat from moving DID YOU KNOW? The ancient tradition of Dragon Boat Racing became a modern sport in Hong Kong in 1976. The first written record of a dragon boat was excavated from the tomb of King Xiang (reigned 318 296 BCE). The myth of Qu Yuan states that he throws himself in the Miluo River and the local fisherman threw Zonzi glutinous rice dumplings and eggs in the water after him. Canada Dry Victoria Dragon Boat Festival Site Hours Friday 2pm-9pm Saturday 8am -9pm Sunday 8am 9pm 15

2018 Lights of Courage The Lights of Courage Campaign honours those in our community who have been diagnosed with cancer. These colourful paper lanterns are on sale from July 20th, 2018 at local Fairway Market locations. Purchase a lantern for $2, write a message of hope on its tag, then add your lantern to the Canada Dry Victoria Dragon Boat Festival display from August 10th 12th. The lantern colours add magic to the evening. But the colours are not nearly as breathtaking as the hand-written messages on the tags. Messages are filled with hope, humour, grief, love and inspiration. Write your wishes for a healthy and long future. Write a poem of remembrance. Write a name and nothing more. Write whatever you like and fill the lantern with light. 19
