ARIZONA HISTORICAL SOCIETY 949 East Second Street Library and Archives Tucson, AZ 85719 (520) 617-1157 ahsref@azhs.gov MS 1340 Huntsman Family Collection 1900-1952 DESCRIPTION The Huntsman Family Collection consists primarily of business and personal records created by various family members including Joel H. Huntsman, Alice K. Huntsman, Nancy Huntsman Breazeale, Alice D. Huntsman, Edward L. Breazeale, and James Frank Breazeale. The Collection also contains photographs of the family and early 1900 s era Tucson and Mt. Lemmon. 17 boxes, 8 linear ft. ACQUISITION Donated by Alice Breazeale McLaughlin and Robert Edward Breazeale in August 1988. ACCESS There are no restrictions on access to this collection. COPYRIGHT Requests for permission to publish material from this collection should be addressed to the Arizona Historical Society, Tucson, Archives Department. PROCESSING The collection was processed by Nicole Stocking in July 2008. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Joel Haun Huntsman (1859-1926) and his wife, Alice Kite Huntsman (1871-1941) moved to Tucson, Arizona in 1900 from Bristol, Tennessee, where Huntsman owned a wholesale grocery business with his brother. Upon arrival in southern Arizona, Huntsman tried his hand at different business ventures. He became involved with several automobile-dealing companies, including Huntsman-Hotchkiss Overland Company (circa 1914). Huntsman also formed the Dos Cabezas Gold Ridge Mining Company (circa 1917). His business dealings prospered for a time, and the family built a mansion on the northeast corner of Speedway and Warren in 1905. However several of the mining claims he was involved with turned out to be fraudulent and the ensuing lawsuits robbed him of his fortune. By the time of his death in 1926, Joel Huntsman was almost penniless. Joel and Alice had two daughters, Nancy Huntsman (1910-1984) and Alice Dorothy Huntsman (1913-1928). The family often wintered in Pasadena, and spent their summers on

Mt. Lemmon. The Huntsmans built what is now the oldest remaining structure on Mt. Lemmon, Camp Huntsman, in 1908. Alice D. Huntsman died in 1928 from pneumonia. Nancy Huntsman worked for several years at the Pima County Recorder s Office. Nancy married Edward Lee Breazeale (1911-1965) on June 6, 1942. Together they had two children, Alice Breazeale McLaughlin and Robert Edward Breazeale. Edward Breazeale graduated from the University of Arizona with a master in bacteriology in 1940. From 1947 to 1957, Edward worked as an Assistant Agricultural Chemist at the University of Arizona Agricultural Experiment Station, and later opened his own business, the Arizona Serological Laboratories, in 1957. He invented the Salivimator, a saliva test for drunk driving, which was used by Tucson Police in the 1950s. Recreationally, Edward was an early member of the Tucson Symphony and formed a marimba band in the late 1940s and early 1950s, of which his wife Nancy was also a member. Edward s father, James Frank Breazeale (1874-1950), was a soil scientist who studied plant-soil moisture relations which was significant in modifying the state s irrigation practices. He also worked at the University of Arizona Agricultural Experiment Station, from 1925-1943. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE This collection is divided into six series and four sub-series. Series One consists of material related primarily to the business papers of Joel H. Huntsman. It includes bank statements, correspondence, paid bills and invoices, car sales contracts and insurance information, several ledger books containing car sales and repair information, legal documents, financial statements, and miscellaneous stock information and promissory notes. Also included are documents related to the Dos Cabezas Gold Ridge Mining Company, including correspondence, monthly reports, checks, assay statements, and blueprints. Series Two consists of manuscript material related to Alice Kite Huntsman, including correspondence, legal papers, a list of family ancestors, newspaper clippings, Huntsman Residence blueprints from 1923, and a land plot sketch. Series Three consists of manuscript material related to Nancy Huntsman Breazeale and Alice Dorothy Huntsman. It includes Nancy s correspondence and a notebook containing recipes and patterns. It also includes a scrapbook complied by Alice before her death and continued afterwards by her family. This scrapbook contains musical programs, newspaper clippings, a handful of photographs, and ephemera related to her death. Series Four consists of manuscript material related primarily to Edward Lee Breazeale, including correspondence, articles and drafts on the subject of serology, and musical programs. Also included are articles written by James Frank Breazeale and obituary information. Series Five consists of miscellaneous manuscript material found with the collection that is most likely related to the family but authorship is currently unknown. This includes a ledger and various invoices from the Tucson Overland Company, and an article entitled Comment on President Roosevelt. Series Six consists of photographic material. This series is divided into four sub-series. Subseries One consists of photographs of people, including portraits and candid shots. There are photographs of every family member and of Joe Newland, who lived with the family.

There are also several group photographs with unidentified persons. Sub-series Two consists of photographs of places, primarily of the Huntsman Residence, both interior and exterior, and the Huntsman Cabin on Mt. Lemmon. Also included are various shots of Tucson, Arizona, and outside Arizona. Sub-series Three consists of subject photographs, including hunting, camping and animals. Sub-series Four consists of one photo album, which primarily contains photographs of the Mt. Lemmon cabin. ARRANGEMENT NOTE Original arrangement was kept where possible, especially pertaining to correspondence and legal files. Where no original arrangement existed, one was created either by chronology or subject. BOX AND FOLDER LISTING Series 1: Joel H.
