Junior Athlete Race Information ACCOMPANYING PARENTS or CARERS Welcome to the Junior Wave of the Windrush Aquathlon 2014. We have included a separate sheet for Junior Athlete s containing the key information about their race. We will also ensure that all key information is included in the race briefing before the start of the Aquathlon. Please ensure that you complete the Parent or Carer s consent form, which is at the back of this pack and bring it along to registration. Laura Club Chairperson
Location of Brockwell Lido and Parking Brockwell Lido is located halfway along Dulwich Road, SE24 0PA. The Lido is well served by buses, and is also next to Herne Hill train station. There is limited free on-street parking on the streets around the Lido entrance, as well as within the lido complex including disabled bays for those that have a Blue Badge. There are also bike racks just outside the main Lido building. Registration and Race Briefing Registration opens at 07:15am. We suggest you arrive near this time so that the Junior Athlete has time to register, arrange their things and get familiar with the course. The registration desk will be located outside of the Lido complex on the grass. The Junior Athlete will be given: o A swim hat with their race number on o A race number to pin onto their run t-shirt or race belt o They will be body marked on their shoulders and legs with their race number. There are small lockers taking 1 next to the pool where you can leave a small bag and valuables if needed. The race briefing will be held next to the pool at 8:15. All competitors MUST attend the briefing. The race is run under British Triathlon rules, and we have a Race Official on site to make sure none are broken. Please familiarize yourself with the BTF rulebook here: http://www.britishtriathlon.org/britain/documents/about/201 3_btf_rulebook_revisions.pdf KEY RULES: No bare torsos, trisuits must be zipped up, no headphones. The Junior Wave will start at 08:30 sharp! We will send individual start times a few days before the race.
Race Day The Swim Depending on the age group that the Junior Athlete belongs to, they will swim the following distances: TriStar Start 50 metres 1 length (starting at end by the main Lido entrance) TriStar 1 100 metres 2 lengths TriStar 2 200 metres 4 lengths TriStar 3 300 metres 6 lengths If the Junior Athlete is swimming more than 2 lengths they will need to duck under the lane rope. They can do a tumble-turn if they wish. The water temperature is relatively cool, so if they are swimming without a wetsuit, it may be a good idea for them to get in the spare lane a couple of minutes before they are due to go to acclimatize and do some swimming to warm up. Please note the following: o Nothing is allowed on the hands and feet during the swim. o No race numbers are allowed on the body during the swim, including under wetsuits. Junior Athletes will be started off according to the swim time they put in their registration, and in numerical order. They will be set off at 15-second intervals. We will tell them their race number when they register on the day. If the Junior Athlete finds they are a lot faster than the person in front of them, they should tap their toes and then pass at the end of the lane. If there is a gap in the lane then they may overtake directly if it is safe to do so and they do not obstruct anyone. The lanes are fairly wide and so there should be plenty of space. Equally, if they are slower than anticipated, and they feel a tap on their toes, they should stop at the end of the length to let the person behind pass. We will have marshals checking that they adhere to this. They must touch the wall at each end of the pool with a hand or foot. Once the Junior Athlete has completed the swim, they should climb out of the pool using the ladder and WALK to the back of the Lido to enter transition. Any Junior Athlete found running here will incur a 2-minute time penalty. This is for their safety, as we do not want anyone slipping over. Penalties will be indicated on a large board next to the finish.
Transition Only competitors and race officials/marshals are allowed into transition after 08.00am.. This means that parents are not allowed into transition to help their child in the race. Transition for Junior Athletes will be inside the lido complex. We will not have marked spaces for each Junior Athlete, just lines, so they can choose the position they like the best. Junior Athletes must take the route marked around the edge of transition to make the distance the same for everyone. They are not allowed to run over the transition area and other people s belongings! If Junior Athletes are not used to taking part in multi-sport events, the transition area is where they will leave their towel and trainers, and anything else they will need for the run (and their wetsuit after the swim, if they are using one). The best clothes for the Junior Athlete to wear for the swim are ones that are tight fitting and that they can then run in. If they prefer, they can put on a t-shirt and shorts over a swimming costume in transition. Junior Athletes must put their race number on in transition: it will either already be pinned onto their t-shirt or will be on their race belt to be clipped on. We will have marshals watching transition at all times, but as for any race, belongings are left at their own risk. The Junior Athlete s time in transition will count as part of the race. It may be a good idea to practice at home what they will do in transition. The Run Depending on the Junior Athlete s age group, the length of the run will be different: TriStar Start 500 metres 1 short lap TriStar 1 1 km 1 lap TriStar 2 2 km 2 laps TriStar 3 3 km 3 laps There will be many marshals with bright bibs around the course to guide the Junior Athletes on their way. There will be marshals to show the junior athletes where to turn around. TriStart athletes will turn just before the wooden conker for a shorter 500m loop than the other age groups, as indicated on the course map. Brockwell Park is not flat, and there is 1 short hill on each lap. The finish line is just near the front of the Lido as indicated on the map. The run course is open to the public, so Junior Athletes should be aware that there may be other people about. Any foul or abusive language to a marshal or member of the public from the junior athlete or their family will result in disqualification.
Refreshments Water will be available at the run start, which the Junior Athletes will also pass on the start of lap 2, and at the finish (see map). Bananas and cakes will also be available for free at the finish. If they are after more sustenance, the Lido Café located on the poolside will be serving refreshments to all spectators and athletes. After The Race We will be awarding medals and T-shirts to all that finish the race. This is thanks to our generous sponsors Balfe s Bikes, Ocean Leisure, Brockwell Lido and Friends of Brockwell Park. For more information on our sponsors please see the attached sheet. We will award prizes to the fastest boy and girl in each age group. If you think that the junior Athlete may have won a prize please hang about until the end of the race so that we can award it to them! We will be timing the Junior Athletes during the race, and these times will be available online at http://www.windrushtri.co.uk/page/windrush-aquathlon by the Monday. If you would like a copy of the results posted to you please email us. There are showers and toilets located in the pool changing rooms in the main Lido building. First Aid If the Junior Athlete should have an accident, or feel unwell at any point during the race, they should contact a marshal. They will then arrange for a first-aider to come to their assistance. It is very important that you give your emergency contact details at the time of registration, as we will get in touch with you in an emergency. Spectating This race is very spectator friendly so we hope you will bring your friends and family along. There is decking seating along the far side of the Lido pool where you can watch the swim and cheer along, as well as enjoying refreshments from the Lido cafe.
