THE PRINCIPLES OF MOVEMENT IN WATER A PRACTICAL APPLICATION FOR THE TEACHER OF SWIMMING AND WATER SAFETY MARK TERECHOVS Water is a unique environment which possesses qualities that both assist and impede a swimmer. In order to achieve efficient movement and maximise skill development, AUSTSWIM Teachers should gain a thorough understanding of the interaction between the water s forces and our biomechanical behaviours. Join Mark as he refreshes your memory and provides a practical application of the principles of movement in water. MAKE TEACHING SAFETY AND SURVIVAL SKILLS FUN! BARB HARTNETT Including the element of fun into classes provides an effective learning platform for the development of safety and survival skills. Barb presents a range of strategies and drills that promote skill, confidence and interaction which are FUN. Join Barb as she examines proposed questions and presents the answers in this enjoyable practical session. The fun activity ideas will provide you with tips to take back to your facility. SESSION THREE WHAT, HOW AND WHY OF FREESTYLE AND BACKSTROKE BEN CUTTRISS This session will look at the approach taken in teaching the alternate action strokes. It will focus on what we do, how we do it, and most importantly WHY? Stroke instruction and development needs to have a purpose and structure and this session aims to provide instructors with an insight into why we do what we do, and how we may be able to do it better. 11.35AM 12.35PM DELIVERING RIP CURRENT SAFETY IN THE POOL MELISSA SAVAGE Each year the number of children from inland NSW that visit the beaches is increasing. Often these children have limited knowledge and experience of surf safety. Through the NSW Water Safety Black Spot Fund, AUSTSWIM, in collaboration with Surf Life Saving NSW and Australia have developed a teacher s guide for delivering rip current awareness and safety in the pool. Join Melissa as she gives you a first look at this resource and takes you through some of the activities in the guide. MAKING BREASTSTROKE SIMPLE JOHN BLADON John Bladon has 30 years experience as a swim teacher and coach. Starting as a volunteer swim teacher in the UK through to an Australian level Coach. John has conducted AUSTSWIM and coaching courses for over 15 years. This presentation will break breaststroke down into understandable segments, suggest progressional learning stages and demonstrate a range of drills. The drills will assist in stroke development and correct common errors. Join John as he helps you to make teaching Breaststroke simple! It is how we address these needs in our mainstream programs that can be the difference between children finding enjoyment and success, to those who are struggling to be part of a group or making few gains. An effective teacher is one who works within an inclusive environment and uses a variety of tools and techniques to engage children to learn. Throughout this practical workshop, you will be provided with a range of creative ideas and workable tools that can be used to encourage all children to join in the fun! This presentation will endeavour to make your teaching days easier with tips, tricks and techniques for teaching Adult Swimming and Water Safety AFTERNOON TEA SESSION SIX 3.45PM 4.15PM 4.15PM 5.15PM KEYNOTE: THE PROFESSIONAL TEACHER JOHN BLADON John Bladon is The Head of Aquatics at Knox Grammar School Aquatic Centre. Join John as he discusses what he expects from his staff from a technical, employment and safety view point. John will also expand on teacher s professional development and career management. His presentation will explain what customers and employers expect from a professional teacher and how to meet these expectations. Originally known as AUSTSWIM Teacher of Aquatics for People with a Disability, this course has been updated and extended to reflect the growing size and diversity of today s communities.
