THE NIKE STORY
World s Best
Athleticism Potential BILL BOWERMAN U of O Track coach 1948-1973
1. Find something you love to do and dedicate yourself to it. 2. If you think you are the best you are not. Always try to do your best. 3. You have a far better chance in life of winnin as part of a team than as an individual. Bill Bowerman
Bowerman s Shared Commitment Bowerman conveyed to Knight and a few others, and Knight conveyed (perhaps more gently) to many that a shared commitment requires a balance of outstanding individual performance and a simultaneous willingness to contribute that performance to the efforts of heterogeneous and unequally talented group. Bowerman taught that a shared commitment returns to each individual more than he puts into it, even if an individual s contribution is a lot bigger than everybody s else s.

But you see, so many of us back then had come off Bowerman s teams. The obstacles the world was throwing at us, well, they were just the business version of hazing. What mattered, what always mattered, was our competitive response. Philip H. Knight - Chairman

I even heard this from Jim Cramer He said that Nike has been able to take its internal culture and leverage it into a resource that is beyond the reach of our competitors. Now, here is what s compelling about those observations from analysts they are people outside the company they have no implicit understanding of our culture all they know is that it is real and powerful.
