The Muddies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third before the Birds got on the board with Roberto Caro scoring on an error to halve the lead. However, with a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and five in the seventh, Carolina jumped out to a 10-1 advantage. The Pelicans scored a run on an Adonis Paula RBI double in the eighth. In the ninth, Zack Short, who had three hits, doubled in a run, P.J. Higgins singled in another and then Hodges homered to draw Myrtle Beach to within 10-5. The Pelicans lost for just the third time in the last 14 games. TALE AS OLD AS TIME Myrtle Beach picked up their 70th win of the season on Thursday against Down East. Thus, the Pelicans are just one victory away from sealing their seventh consecutive winning season. The Birds run of success is by far the longest in the Carolina League. Including this season, Lynchburg has three campaigns in a row of at least a.500 record, Salem has posted two straight, but no one else has any posted a streak of any kind. Myrtle Beach is also just one home win from registering their seventh consecutive winning record at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. SERIES-US BLACK Myrtle Beach lost in Friday s series opener to Carolina, and with one more loss in their set to the Mudcats, the Pelicans would see an impressive streak come to an end. After beginning the second half with a 1-8-4 series record, the Birds have taken four consecutive sets. This is Myrtle Beach s best run of the season since winning their final five series of the first half from May 31 through June 18. WORSE COMES TO WORST Unless Myrtle Beach can win the final nine games of the regular season, the Pelicans will suffer their first nonwinning half in quite a while. With a record of 27-34 in the second half, one more loss means the Birds will register their first.500 record or worse since the second half of the 2011 campaign, when they went 32-38 (.457). Myrtle Beach s current.443 winning percentage is their worst in any half since going 26-44 (.371) in the first half of 2010. THE PELICANS RUN ON DUNCAN After posting a 2.11 ERA with Low-A South Bend this season, right-hander Duncan Robinson earned a promotion to High-A Myrtle Beach on July 6, and has somehow been even better with the Pelicans. The Houston, Texas native has posted a 2.04 ERA mark with the Birds, and over his last six starts, has been even better. In those six outings since July 18, Robinson hasn t had a start in which he s surrendered more than two earned runs. In fact, he s yielded just five runs total, four earned, on 22 hits in 30.2 innings for a 1.17 ERA. Partly because of a 50.9 percent ground ball rate, Robinson s FIP places 16th in the Carolina League among pitchers with at least 30 innings pitched at 2.81. PITCH PERFECT Despite a 10-5 loss to Carolina on Friday, Myrtle Beach has still won 11 of their last 14 games. Perhaps the biggest reason for this sudden hot spurt, as the Birds had a fivegame losing streak heading into this roll, has been the club s pitching. Over this 14-game stretch, which dates back to August 12, the Pelicans have surrendered just 43 runs, an average of only 3.1 per game. Myrtle Beach s 2.70 ERA over this stretch actually ranks seventh in full season Minor League Baseball. The Birds offense has also put together a solid run, plating 71 runs over the past 14 games, an average of 5.1 per contest. START OF SOMETHING NEW Perhaps it is no coincidence that the Pelicans have won 11 of their last 14 games when examining the club s starting pitching. Mike Rucker allowed three earned runs over four innings on Friday against Carolina, the 14th consecutive game that a Pelicans starting pitcher had ceded no more than three earned runs. Over those past 14 games, Myrtle Beach starters have allowed just 21 runs, 18 earned, on 59 hits in 67.2 innings for a 2.39 ERA (7.8 H/9). Birds starting pitching has whiffed 50 against 14 walks since this run began on August 12. PELICAN POINT In 27 games dating back to July 27, Tyler Alamo is 33-for-96, slashing.344/.388/.521 (.909 OPS) with 8 2B, 3 HR, 12 RBIs, 5 BB and 2 HBP. Thanks to this hot streak, Alamo has vaulted into sixth in the league in average (.284). UPCOMING PROBABLE STARTING PITCHERS AND GAME TIMES DATE TIME OPPONENT PELICANS STARTER OPP. STARTER Sun.
