CELEBRATING 19 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Wilmington, NC Chapter - American Singles Golf Association July 2012 Message from the Chapter President Greetings Fellow Golfers and Hackers, Wow!, What a great turnout for the Myrtle Beach "Beach Battle Tourney"! Congratulations on the win. There were over 30 Wilmington members that participated and won the trophy. Thanks to Nancy Feller from Myrtle Beach who took the photos and Diane Fastnacht for posting them on Facebook. We also thank the Myrtle Beach Chapter for sponsoring the successful event. We now have a new Social Chairman, Miss Congeniality, Mary Kidwell. Members will vote for a new Treasurer at our next meeting on July 12. The meeting will be at our monthly, "Nine and Dine", at Magnolia Greens in Leland. If you wish to play nine holes starting at 3:00, let me know by Tuesday, July 10. Social hour starts at 6:00 and the meeting follows at 7:00pm. We welcome our new members. Good hitting! ~Dave Fedora, Chapter President Beach Battle Against Myrtle Beach on June 16th The Wilmington Chapter was respresented by a fine looking team of golfers at the annual Beach Battle on June 16 at the Sandpiper Bay Golf Course in Sunset Beach. It was close but Wilmington came home with the trophy. Bill Duncan, Vice President, accepted the trophy on behalf of the team and our chapter. Minutes of the June Meeting June 14, 2012 Bill Duncan, Vice President called the meeting to order. The minutes for the May meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter. Clare Parsons had two nominees for Treasurer, but since neither candidate was present, suggestions will be made at next meeting in July. Mary Kidwell was nominated as Membership Chairperson and voted in by those present at the meeting. Bill Duncan said he would be meeting with Dave Fedora to discuss chapter matters and would be forwarding a letter to Diane Fastnacht for inclusion in newsletter. He suggested the possibility of holding a dual Myrtle Beach/Wilmington chapter monthly meeting as a means of increasing membership participation in playing golf and attending meetings. At the suggestion of Sue Williamson for WSGA participation, membership present voted to donate $100 to Hope Harbor Home Women s Club Championship Golf Tournament to be held on August 16. Individual donations can also be made to: www.hopeharborhome.org. Committee Reports: Communication: Diane Fastnacht asked that all news items and newsletter articles be submitted to her for July newsletter. Social: Sue Williamson apologized for no lunch service at Carolina National on June 9; she will follow up with them re the mix-up. Rivers Edge has a nice grill for lunch on June 23. Sue will be following up lunch at Crow Creek and North Shore in July. Golf: John Travis had signup sheet for Rivers Edge on June 23. North Shore will be on July 7 and Crow Creek on July 21. The plaque is in place on 8 th hole at Olde Point in memory of John Stenerson. Clare Parsons said she would e- mail Barry Nicol to invite Myrtle Beach to golf outings. Old Business: A new Treasurer is still needed. New Business: John Travis will be sending out an e-mail to members asking for their input as to what is happening to our chapter as to participation in golf outings and monthly meetings. Today only four played 9 holes; no one played 18 at Magnolia Greens. Just eleven came to monthly meeting. Bill Duncan will be following up with Dave Fedora as to review of what is going on and where this chapter is headed. Clare Parsons won 50/50. The meeting was adjourned. Respectfully submitted, ~Gerry Hevaghan, Secretary Golf Humor A man was walking down the street when he was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabby-looking homeless man who asked him for a couple of dollars for dinner. The man took out his wallet, extracted ten dollars and asked, "If I give you this money, will you buy some beer with it instead of dinner?" "No, I had to stop drinking years ago," the homeless man replied. "Will you spend this on green fees at a golf course instead of food?" the man asked. "Are you NUTS!" replied the homeless man. "I haven't played golf in 20 years!" "Well," said the man, "I'm not going to give you money. Instead, I'm going to take you home for a shower and a terrific dinner cooked by my wife." The homeless man was astounded. "Won't your wife be furious with you for doing that? The man replied, "That's okay. It's important for her to see what a man looks like after he has given up drinking and golf." Golf Etiquette/Pace of Play In May, CBS Sports Anchor Peter Kostis highlighted an article called BEING AC- COUNTABLE - Pick up the pace by taking responsibility for your actions on the course. "Slow play can only be solved when we take personal responsibility for our actions. Play ready golf. Drop a person off at his ball and then drive to your ball. Pick up rather than putt out for a 10. (we have a policy of taking a max score of triple bogey) Save a minute here and there, and you'll be surprised how quickly they add up. Another benefit of a brisker pace is that you'll likely start shooting lower scores. Golf is all about rhythm and being in the moment, and if you can't focus because you're waiting on every hole, then you won't play well." The article reports readers expectation of how long it should take a foursome to play 18 holes. 23% said 3.5 hours, 63% said 4 hours and 9% said 4.5 hours. Our maximum target should be 4.5 hours. Another article stated that based on 4 bogey golfers, if you take 5 extra seconds per shot that it will add 30 minutes to the round of golf. (4 players X 90 shots = 360 shots X 5 seconds = 1800 seconds divided by 60 seconds = 30 minutes. A different approach in a July article in Golf Magazine quotes "I have been studying what makes a round slow and have come to one conclusion: it's the readiness to hit when it's your turn. If you have one person in your foursome who takes 40 seconds from tee to impact while everyone else does it in 18 seconds, that's a 22 second difference. Multiply that by 18 holes and you get over 6 1/2 minutes. If similiar delays happen on all shots and that person shoots an 85, that works out to just about a half hour --and this is for one person in the foursome only! It's not how many shots you hit--it's being ready and hitting them without delay.

Golf News John Travis will be out of town during the month of July. Bill Duncan will be handling the July golf events. This month we will be playing North Shore Country Club on saturday July 7th. Cost for this event will be $39.00 with tee times starting at 10:30 AM. Please let Bill know before Thursday, July 5. The heat of this week will be over and expect some nice cool breezes coming off the ocean. This has always been a nice course to play. Also Saturday July 21 st, we will be playing Crow Creek with double tee times begining at 8:39 for the low cost of $37.00. Another nice course for a reasonable rate. Sign up for this event is now until Thursday July 19th. Let's get out there and have some fun and fellowship. Please send an e-mail to Bill Duncan wearldunc3@yahoo.com to sign up each of these events. Clare Parsons has been doing a great job with Golfing Around each Thursday. Unfortunately the dining experience at C.N. left a lot to be desired. I guess we won't try that again. Fortunately the restaurant at River's Edge got rave reviews. The annual Beach Battle with Myrtle beach was a big success. We were proud to bring the trophy back to Wilmington. We enjoyed hamburgers, hot dogs and all the fixings at the Sandpiper Bay clubhouse while socializing with new and old friends. We all wish Jan Van Der Vliet a speedy recovery from hip surgery. ~Sue Williamson, Social Chair Membership We have a new Membership Chair and it is Mary Kidwell. Watch for the August Newsletter for more information from Mary. Wilmington Chapter Policy: New guests may attend one meeting and one golf outing (normally the first outing following the meeting date). After that, the guest may not participate in future outings until they join and dues are paid in full. Rules and More Rules Using club at feet to check alignment during play Q. Larry was in the club house mumbling about having to buy drinks for his playing partners. These guys play for fun but then penalize each other after the round for perceived rules infractions. The one with the most infractions buys the round. It seems that deliberate Larry wanted to be doubly sure of his alignment. He placed his selected club at his feet to adjust his alignment prior to lifting it up to make his swing. At the end of the round, his partners said he would have had a stroke penalty for each infraction. Yes, I know, had they called the penalty at the time, he would have not continued with his alignment technique. Question, were his partners correct, would his alignment technique have really cost him a one stroke penalty A. Yes, he would have had a one stroke penalty B. No, he would have had a two stroke penalty C. No, there would have been no penalty And the answer is.. Correct Answer: C Rule 8-2, Indicating Line of Play. Rule 8-2a pertaines to all situations "Other Than on Putting Green"; Rule 8-2b addresses "On the Putting Green." Rule 8-2a allows a golfer to place a mark or aid to indicate the line of play (such as placing clubs or a towel, or twigs on the ground to align for the shot) prior to making the stroke. However, the item(s) used to indicate the line of play or help your alignment must be removed before the stroke is actually played. So, Larry was permitted without penalty to place his golf club at his feet to align or indicate line of play as long as he removed the club before actually hitting the ball. Which he did. No penalty. Had Larry left the alignment guide in place, he would have had not a one (1), but a two (2) stoke penalty! Penalty for Breach of Rule: Match play Loss of hole; Stroke play Two strokes.
