LOWELL PARKS & RECREATION THE RECREATION CONNECTION Fall & Winter 2016 The Lowell Parks & Recreation Department will continually strive to serve as the center of the community by providing all citizens with positive leisure and recreational experiences! LIL CHEFS Calling all 6-12 year old little chefs...learn basic culinary skills and kitchen safety while preparing meals with Chef Delgado! Students will prepare a dish each time we meet during this four week course. October 10th Wednesdays 10/19, 10/26/, 11/2, 11/9 5:30 pm 7 pm Lowell VFW 17401 Morse St. Lowell, IN $63 res/ $68 non-res 6 min/ 15 max BUMPER BOWLING A GREAT FIRST ACTIVITY FOR 2-5 YEAR OLDS! We will meet on Thursdays at 1 pm at Lowell Country Lanes for 6 weeks of bowling! This is an introduction bowling program. It s a fantastic way for your child to make new friends and socialize with peers their age. Fee includes one game each time we meet, shoe rental for parent & child, an end of season pizza party and a trophy. Session 1: October 13th November 17th. We rent shelters at Evergreen Park, Liberty Park, Freedom Park and the gazebo at Old Towne Square. Each park has special amenities. Please contact us for more information about our shelters and parks! Reservation books open on January 2, 2017 for 2017 reservations. Shelter permits are filled on a first come, first served basis. Youth 12 and under are invited to join us for our annual costume contest and Monster March! This is a free community event! Registration will happen on the day of the event at Liberty Park. Costume Contest: Registration begins at 11 am, Judging begins at 11:30. 1st 3rd place prizes are awarded in each category. Categories: Scariest, Funniest, Most Original and Best Character Monster March: Youth will leave Liberty Park at 12 noon, following the Great Pumpkin through Lowell s downtown district to collect treats! *Please bring a bag to collect your treats! Halloween Hoopla Saturday, October 29th @11 am BARKTOBERFEST 2016 SATURDAY OCTOBER 8th, 2016 10am-3pm A DOG FRIENDLY EVENT BROUGHT TO YOU BY: FREEDOM PARK, RELAY FOR LIFE AND THE LOWELL WOMAN S CLUB! THIS EVENT IS HOSTED AT FREEDOM PARK BARK PARK 17105 CLINE AVENUE LOWELL, IN 46356 Barktoberfest is a family, dog friendly event hosted at Freedom Park Dog Park. Help support Relay for Life, Lowell Woman s Club and your local parks! We will have several pet friendly and people friendly vendors at the 2016 Barktoberfest! Rescue groups, businesses, and civic organizations are encouraged to attend. Join us for demonstrations from area agility groups and local K-9 officers. We will have a pet blessing, a pet costume contest, and a raffle! Vendor applications must be submitted no later than 9/15/16. Fall & Winter Recreation Connection Page 3 Senior Events at Lowell Library The Lowell Parks Department and Lowell Public Library meet once monthly with our local senior citizens at the library. All of our events are free to attend. Please contact the Park Office at 696-1570 to reserve your spot. Senior Happenings September December 2016 September 8 th 11am Movie! Bring a bag lunch. We will provide the movie, drinks, popcorn and candy. October 6 th 11am LMS jazz band! Bring a bag lunch. We will provide drinks and dessert. November 3rd 11am Cookies & Crafts with LHS National Honor Society. Decorate cookies, and make crafts with the students! We will begin taking reservations for our Holiday luncheon at this event. If you would like to bring a dessert to the luncheon, please let us know today! December 1 st 11am Holiday Luncheon!! Lowell High School Show Choir is scheduled to perform. Seniors who attend the November 3 rd Craft & Cookies event will have the first opportunity to make reservations. Public reservations will begin November 4 th at 9am by phoning the Park Office. * January - May 2017 dates to be announced Holiday Magic November 25, 2016 Candy Cane Hunt, Parade of Lights, Tree Lighting Ceremony, Visit with Santa Archery Classes Instruction from hunter safety instructors at Riverside Archery Range. Classes are open to 5 years old and up. This is a great program for parents and kids to do together! We supply all of the equipment. Please check back with us on exact dates. We are awaiting availability from the range at the time of publication. Times: Saturdays 1pm, 2:30pm, 4pm class Riverside Archery Range Sumava Resorts Candy Cane Hunt 2 pm Liberty Park Youth 12 and under are invited to hunt for over 2,000 candy canes. Find the special candy cane and win a sweet treat! This event is free to attend. No registration necessary. Hunt begins promptly at 2pm! Parade of Lights 6 pm Lighted floats will depart from Lowell Public Library, travel west on Commerical Ave. and conclude at the American Legion. Watch for our Special guest Santa to arrive! Tree Lighting Immediately following the parade American Legion Join us for some holiday cheer while Santa lights the Town Tree! This tradition will surely get you into the holiday spirit! Parade applications are printed in this newsletter, on the parks website, at the Park Office, and at the Town Hall. Registration deadline to enter the parade is November 11, 2016. Deadline to sponsor is November 1, 2016. Visit with Santa Immediately following Tree Lighting Girl Scout Service Unit #309 will be hosting this event at the American Legion. Refreshments will be available with small donation. Don t forget to bring your camera for a photo with Santa! We offer engraved bricks that will be placed into our Freedom Park Memorial Brick Walk. Each 4 by 8 brick can be engraved with 3 lines of text. Bricks are $35 Order Forms are available in the Park Office. Donate A Tree Would you like to give a gift that keeps on giving? This is a great way to remember someone for many years to come. We have a list of trees that you can donate to plant at Freedom Park. 15 by 8 Memorial bricks are also available for purchase. These bricks will be placed next to your donated tree. Residents can pre-register and make payment for these Midwest programs at the park office (located at Freedom Park-17105 Cline Ave.) By registering at the Park Office, Midwest will waive the yearly registration fee for our residents! That s a $25 savings! All of these classes will take place at Midwest's Dyer location (10600 White Oak Ave., Dyer, IN) Tots (Ages 3-5) Learn to Skate Beginner skate class.
