Wright County 4-H Newsletter October 2018 Happy National 4-H Week to all! It s the new 4-H year, make sure you re-enroll for 4-H. What about inviting your friends to join you in 4-H, remember 4-H is about Friends, Family, and Fun. IT S TIME TO RE-ENROLL All Families need to do the Online process to re-enroll. You can do this now, and need to have done by November 1st. It s as easy as 1...2...3 1. Log in with your family email at https://iowa.4honline.com (your password will be the same as last year, to obtain a new one, click I forgot my password ) choose family as role. 2. Review and update your information. Make sure you sign up for any four legged projects you are interested in or visual arts, aerospace, rifle and archery SESS, or food. 3. Click Submit 4. NATIONAL 4-H WEEK ACTIVITIES...OCTOBER 7-13, 2018 Be thinking about ways for your club to recruit new 4-H members! There could be a club window display or individual join 4-H posters in your community, or a special invites to youth to join your club are a few great ways to recruit new 4-H members! Those that you know that could benefit from 4-H you can ask them to join your club? 4-H POSTER CHALLENGE Individuals are encouraged to create a poster that promotes 4-H. Have the poster on display in a business (library, local elevator, grocery store, gas stations, main street shops, school, or bank). Take a picture of your poster on display and email it to jnorman@iastate.edu or drop it at the Wright County Extension Office for judging by October 12 th. Recognition will be presented at Awards Day in November. 4-H SHIRT DAY To celebrate 4-H week, 4-H members and volunteers are encouraged to wear a 4-H shirt during the National 4-H Week October. So pick a day and wear your 4-H shirt to your school/ work, then take a picture email to jnorman@iastate.edu or text it to Jessica at 515-890-1748. You could take a group picture of you and family/friends showing your 4-H spirit! Awards will be given at Awards Day to those who get Jessica a picture in 4-H shirt, by October 12th. NEED A 4-H T-SHIRT? Wright County green 4-H t-shirts are available for purchase. The cost is $10.00 and they can be purchased at the Wright County Extension Office. There are youth and adult sizes. Stop in the office and get your shirt today! GREEN APPRECIATION WEEK During National 4-H Week, Wright County 4-H ers are challenged to show their appreciation to someone who has supported them in 4-H. Thank your supporter with a gift of green. Gifts ideas: plants, green and white balloon bouquets, green cupcakes, basket of green food items. Please submit a short written report of why you appreciate your supporter and how you showed your appreciation. Email jnorman@iastate.edu or drop it off to the Extension Office by October 12 th. NATIONAL 4-H WEEK 5K RUN/WALK What a great way to end National 4-H Week either taking part in or volunteering to help with the Wright County 4-H 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at Lake Cornelia in Clarion, Iowa. To register for 5K you can get forms at the Extension Office or complete one day of race. Want to volunteer as a helper at the 5K race contact the Extension Office at 515-532-3453. 4-H CLUB OFFICER/LEADERSHIP TRAINING New this year is a club officer/leadership training on Sunday, October 21st at the Extension office from 4-6 pm. This is open to all 4-H youth who are interested in learning club officer roles plus leadership skills. Youth need to let Jessica know you re coming by Friday, October 19th. There will be light meal served, please make sure to sign up. 4-H HALLOWEEN PARTY All 4-H member are invited to a 4-H Halloween Party on Sunday, October 28th at the Extension office from 3-5 pm. Everyone is to wear their Halloween Costume and come to have fun. I encourage everyone to bring a non-perishable food item that is going to be donated to the local food pantry. There will be FRIENDS, FOOD, & FUN!! Come and have a great a time at the Halloween Party, see you there! NEW MEMBERS NEEDED IN 4-H! Now is the time to recruit new members for your 4-H club! Anyone 4th-12th grade is eligible to join 4-H. Invite a friend to attend your next club meeting. Tell them about your 4-H experiences, including 4-H meetings, Fun Night, camps, trips and fairs! There are projects for every interest and good manuals and information available for their use. 4-H members learn life long skills through their projects choices. They learn communication skills through presentations and Share the Fun, have new experiences and make new friends by attending summer camps, trips and project meetings. The Extension staff and Teen Council members will be visiting the schools in Wright County to promote the 4-H program. Want to know ALL ABOUT 4-H? We will be having a 4-H Find Out on Thursday, October 25th from 430-6:30 pm. (come & go style) If you are brand new member looking for information about 4-H and the clubs we have, or if you are an existing member and just have questions or need to fill in the blanks, this Find Out night is for you! Youth and their families are welcome to attend, and you DO NOT have to be a member yet to come...we ll get started on that. WRIGHT COUNTY 4-H CLOVER KIDS Clover Kids is an Iowa State University Extension & Outreach Program that will offer youth hands on learning in small short term groups with activities, games and other positive experiences to explore. Clover Kids is for youth in Kindergarten 3rd grade. Again this year, Clover Kids will meet at the Extension office from 5:30-6:30 pm. There will be two sessions breaking them by grade level. Both sessions start October and run through April 2019. On the 2nd Tuesday of the month the 2nd & 3rd graders will meet. On the 3rd Thursday of the month the Kindergarten & 1st graders will meet. Now is the time to sign your youth up for this fun program. Cost for the this program is $20 which includes 7 sessions. The youth will also be able to participate in the Wright County Fair this coming summer. All Clover Kids youth will have the opportunity to display exhibits after visiting with a judge about their exhibit. All exhibits will be given a rainbow ribbon and the exhibit will be on display until Sunday night of the fair. Registrations will be online at https://iowa.4honline.com (if in Clover Kids last year or have/had a family member in 4-H then there is already a family account). Questions please contact Jessica Norman at the Wright County ISU Extension & Outreach office 515-532-3453 or jnorman@iastate.edu NEW 4-H VOLUNTEER REQUIRED TRAINING This training is designed for new 4-H volunteers committing to a long term experience working with 4-H youth as club, project, Clover Kid leaders and assistants. Volunteers committing to these roles are required to attend a regional new volunteer training within the first 12 months of being screened and approved as a 4-H volunteer. The blended learning training is designed to give new volunteers a better working knowledge of positive youth development, the Iowa 4-H Equation, and tools that will help them be more confident and capable in their roles working with youth. The training will be delivered in two components. The first includes four online training modules that help create a baseline for 4-H volunteers. It is followed by a regional, three hour face-to-face training that will allow volunteers to apply some of their learning. SEWING WORKSHOP Looking for something to do over Christmas break, want to complete an exhibit for the county fair, and construct yourself pajama pants. The pajama pant workshop will be held 9 am to noon at Sally s Sewing Room Clarion on Thursday, December 27 & Friday, December 28th. Space is limited sign up today. If you have a sewing machine please bring, but if you don t have one we will have one for you to use. For those that sign up more information will be giving on supplies needed, pattern will be supplied. WOODWORKING WORKSHOP We are working on setting up a woodworking workshop, but need to know who would be interested in attending, what your skill level is, ideas what you would like to build, and when would it work best for you to attend a woodworking workshop? Contact Jessica and let her know you re interested with answers to the questions above. She will then work with a volunteer to set something up, so more information to come after we see there is interest. LOOKING FOR WORKSHOP IDEAS What type of project area workshops would you like to see this year? Let Jessica know what your interested in and if you know someone to lead a workshop share that with her too. 2018 WRIGHT COUNTY FAIR THEME CHALLENGE The Wright County Fair Board is challenging all 4-H Clubs to brainstorm themes for the 2019 Fair. Submit all that you come up with! The theme that is selected by the Fair Board will be awarded a cash prize!!! Submit all ideas by Monday, October 15th. WRIGHT COUNTY FAIRBOARD ANNUAL MEETING Everyone is invited to attend the fair board annual meeting set for Monday, November 12, 7 pm at the Wright County ISU Extension & Outreach office. It is strongly encouraged that 4-H member, parents, and friends of the 4-H program show support to the Wright County Fair Board and attend their annual meeting. 4-H AWARDS DAY BANQUET 4-H ers, parents, families and friend of 4-H are all welcome to attend the Awards Day Banquet, November 11 th at the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows High School. There will be a meal beginning at 5pm free will donation and awards program will start at 6 pm. Dollars raised form the meal will go towards the 4- H ers for 4-H Campaign. If you are new to 4-H or have never attended the banquet, consider making this one your first! This is a great time to meet other families and clubs, as well as celebrate 4-H and enjoy a delicious meal. All items need to be at the high school by 4:45pm on Sunday.
