The Travs slugged 16 base hits including a season-high 8 extra-base hits and 5 doubles. This after Traveler hitters had batted just.192 during with 6 extra-base hits during a 7-game losing streak. Borenstein s Cycle Borenstein became the first Traveler player in nearly 7 years (Aaron Peel 2007) to complete the cycle when he doubled in the 8th inning on Sunday at Hammons Field. A 1st inning line drive single was followed by a hot smash that took a bad hop down the 1st-base line for a triple in the 3rd inning. In the 7th inning Borenstein delivered a go-ahead 2-run homer and capped a 4-run rally with a double in the 8th. He even got a 6th plate appearance and walked in the 9th inning. In the last 3 games Borenstein is 6-for-11 with 2 home runs, 2 doubles and a triple adding 6 RBI. Random Rants Outfielder Kyle Hudson has reached base in 13 of 14 games played this year including the last 9 games in a row (.459 OBP, 5 runs)...travs right handed pitcher Cam Bedrosian has struck out 18 of 23 batters faced this year between the Travs and Inland Empire Relief pitcher Brandon Sisk has returned from Tommy John surgery strongly with batters just 1-for-17 against him...in 14 games since scoring 20 runs on 24 hits April 3 the Travs are batting.218 with 35 runs. The Melkman Cometh The Angels signed free agent outfielder Adam Melker on Sunday and assigned him to the Travs roster. Melker was released at Spring Training by the St. Louis Cardinals after spending the previous 4 years in their organization. A career.265/.340/.374 hitter, Melker played 233 games for Springfield from 2012-2013. In his Travs debut in Springfield, Melker went 4-for -5 with a home run, 3 RBI and 3 runs scored. Concentrated Offense The Travs total 66 runs in 16 games this season, but nearly half of their runs are concentrated amongst just 7 innings. In the team s 20-7 victory on Opening Night in Midland the Travs scored 17 runs during a 3- inning stretch. A 5-run inning highlighted an 8-1 win at Frisco on April. Then in Sunday s 11-3 win, the Travs bound together 10 runs into the final 3 innings. That s 32 runs total in a 7-inning stretch. All other innings total 34 runs. Run Rabbits Run Currently the Travs lead the Texas League and the High Minors (AA and AAA) with 24 stolen bases and have 8 players with at least 1 steal. Already this season the Travs have two games with 7 stolen bases including Thursday s 2-1 victory. The Travs hadn t stolen 7 bases in a game since pilfering 8 bases on April 16, 2011 in a 10-2 win over Midland in Little Rock. Lucky Fourteen The Arkansas Travelers began their 14th season as an affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday. The club s 73-66 regular season record was its best since 1998. During the affiliation with the Angels, the Travs hold a record of 863-1061 (.449 pct) and own two Texas League titles (2001, 2008). The 2014 season is the last on a two-year player development contract signed in September 2012. The Travs posted a 2363-2393 record in 35 years as a St. Louis Cardinals affiliate from 1966-2000. Wellman Leads Travs A veteran of 30 seasons in professional baseball, new Travs manager Phillip Wellman is back in a familiar role as manager where he owns a 862-939 record in 15 minor league seasons, including eight years as a manager in the Southern League with the Mississippi Braves (2007-2010) and Chattanooga Lookouts (1999, 2001-2003). Most recently Wellman was the hitting coach for the Springfield Cardinals from 2011 through 2013 and tutored Texas League Players of the Year (Matt Adams - 2011 and Oscar Taveras - 2012). Wellman, a native of Bulverde, Texas, managed the M-Braves to the 2008 Southern League Championship. Wellman went into coaching in 1988 with the Atlanta Braves organization after the end of a four-year playing career as an outfielder and infielder in the minor leagues. He took his first managerial post in 1992 with the Gulf Coast Orioles and managed four years in Rookie-level affiliated baseball. His first full-season managing job came with Winston-Salem in 1996 in the Carolina League beginning his eight-year stint in the Cincinnati Reds farm system.
