The Broncos open up the homestand with UNLV at 7:30 p.m. (Mountain) on Thursday, followed by an encounter with New Mexico at noon on Saturday. Both contest will be in Bronco Gym and will be broadcast over the internet by the Mountain West Network. LAST WEEK FOR THE BRONCOS The Broncos wrapped up four straight road matches with a split last weekend falling in a heartbreaker at San Diego State 3-2, then regrouped to rally from one set down to defeat Fresno State 3-1. Sierra Nobley led the Broncos on the week tallying 45 kills, four service aces and three block assists for 50.5 points. Sabryn Roberts had back-to-back doubledoubles on the week and recorded 27 kills, five service aces and eight blocks for 36.5 points. In the win at Fresno State, Nobley tallied a team-best 23 kills, Roberts added 12 kills and 10 digs, while Laney Hayes recorded a career-high 12 blocks to tie for second most in school history. ABOUT UNLV The Rebels enter the week at 8-15 overall and have a 4-6 league mark. UNLV is coming off a home split last week falling to No. 20 Colorado State (3-0) before defeating Wyoming (3-2). UNLV is averaging 10.8 kills per set (11th MW) while hitting 15.9 percent (10th MW) on the year... the Rebels are holding opponents to 21.8 percent hitting (9th MW). UNLV was picked to place seventh in the MW preseason poll after returning two starters and three letterwinners from last year s team. This will be the 17th meeting in the all-time series which Boise State leads 11-5... the Broncos won 3-0 earlier this year in Las Vegas. Garus is 263-236 overall in his 17-year career as a collegiate head coach, 2017 marks his 17th season. Garus is currently 155-117 at Boise State in his ninth season. KEY PLAYERS BACK IN 2017 (8/22/2017) Sierra Nobley: The Broncos return the bulk of the 2016 MW championship team including two-time AVCA Honorable Mention All-American and 2016 MW Player of the Year Sierra Nobley, a senior outside hitter. Nobley is set to break the school and MW records for career kills and points this season. Last year she led the conference and ranked 12th nationally for kills per set at 4.58, as well as ranking 17th in the NCAA for total kills (522) and 16th for total points (589.0). Nobley has set the school single season kills record each of the last two years 513 in 2015 followed by 522 in 2016. Maddi Osburn: Two-time All-Mountain West honoree Maddi Osburn returns for her senior season at libero. Osburn set the school record for digs in a season during 2016 with 544 to lead the MW and rank 63rd nationally. She is poised to break the school record for career digs this season needing 274. 2015 AND 2016 MW COACH OF THE YEAR 2016 AVCA REGION COACH OF THE YEAR Shawn Garus, the two-time Mountain West Coach of the Year in 2015 and 2016, joined the Bronco family on June 30, 2009, becoming the 10th head coach in Boise State volleyball history. He currently serves in two capacities for the Boise State Athletics Department as the head coach for both of the Broncos volleyball programs, indoor and beach. The 2017-18 year marks Garus ninth season at the helm of Boise State s volleyball (indoor) program holding a 143-106 (.574) record over his first eight seasons with the Broncos. His career record through 16 seasons as a collegiate head coach is now 251-226 (.526). In addition, Garus helped usher in the newest sport to the Bronco family as head coach of the beach volleyball program which began in the spring of 2014. During the program s first four campaigns he has led the beach team to a 18-30 record, including 5-6 in 2017. BOISE STATE TENURE (2009-PRES.) Garus inherited a program that was struggling and had only one winning season in the previous 10 years. Since arriving on campus, Garus has won more matches than his five predecessors combined between 1997 and 2008. Cal State San Bernardino, 1995 current home as a member of the Mountain West Conference starting with the 2011 campaign. In 2016 he guided his team to the Mountain West championship going 16-2 in league and 26-7 overall, as well as the program s first-ever berth into the NCAA National Championship Tournament where the Broncos advanced to the second round following a 3-0 victory over 20th-ranked Western Kentucky before falling at eventual national champion and ninth-ranked Stanford. The conference title is only the program s second alltime and first since 1988. After producing an 8-22 record in his first season, Garus has since guided Boise State to six winning seasons in eight years, including three with 20- plus victories. His 2010 squad went 21-12 overall, followed by a 23-7 record in 2015 and 26-7 mark in 2016. The three 20-win seasons are three of 10 all-time in program history and the first since the 1990 campaign. The 26 wins in 2016 are the most since the 1990 team went 23-12, 27 years ago. The Broncos Mountain West Conference records of 11-7 in 2014, 15-3 in 2015 and 16-2 are the best three-year stretch in league play since 1988 through 1990 campaigns. The 16 conference wins in 2016 are the most in program history. The Broncos also placed second in the MW during 2015 at 15-3, making it the first time since 1988-89 that the program recorded back-to-back top-two league finishes (1st then 2nd).
