The Bears lost their second leading scorer and second leading rebounder in Kately, as well as their third leading scorer and leading assist man in Bolden. The two returning starters are 2009 MEAC tournament MVP and 2008-09 leading scorer Reggie Holmes, and returning leading rebounder and 2009 MEAC All-Rookie Team selection Kevin Thompson. DEDICATING THE SEASON 4 TO A TEAMMATE The Bears have dedicated their season to one of their own, 6-foot-10 Anthony Anderson, who was diagnosed with leukemia in October. Anderson, a redshirt freshman from St. Charles, Md. was expected to contribute off the bench this season, is undergoing chemotherapy at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Anthony is going through a form of treatment right now, but the family wants to keep the particulars private, said Leonard Haynes, a Morgan spokesman. The whole team went to the hospital and stood in his room as the doctor explained how he was going to treat him, said Todd Bozeman. Everybody loves Big Ant. Players will wear a patch with Anderson s number (4) on their jerseys this season. Rodney Stokes, a 6-10 junior, had his game sneakers autographed by Anderson, right across the toe. Anderson was released from John's Hopkins hospital to spend Thanksgiving with his family. 2008-09 MEAC Champs 2009 MEAC Tournament Champs Mid-Major Coach of the Year MORGAN PICKED TO REPEAT AS MEAC CHAMPS Morgan State received 20 first place votes and totaled 476 points to garner the league s top position for the second year in a row. Led by the conference s back-to-back Coach of the Year Todd Bozeman, the Bears were crowned tournament champions and earned their second straight regular season title last year with a 13-3 MEAC record and 23-12 overall mark. MSU recorded several notable wins last season including victories over Marshall (72-67), DePaul (79-75), and Maryland (66-65). The Bears also knocked off the Towson Tigers in their first-ever appearance in ESPNU s BracketBusters. TIME TO DO HOLMES-WORK Reggie Holmes was named to the 2009-10 Preseason All-MEAC first team. Fresh off a season where he averaged 16.8 ppg and 5.5rpg, Holmes is arguably one of the best rebounding guards and the best pure shooter in the conference. Last season he was selected to the All-MEAC first team and was awarded the honor of 2009 MEAC Tournament MVP. Ranks No. 1 in three-pointers (99) made in a single season. Ranks No. 1 in career three-pointer field goal made (253). Holmes has already placed his stamp in the Morgan State record books in a number of categories: Ranks No. 2 in most points scored in a single season (587; 2008-09) Ranks 4th on the school s all-time scoring list (1,588)...He needs 233 points to move into No. 3 alltime. Holmes posted a game-high 23 points (6-6 FT) with five boards and three steals in the Bears seasonopener win at Albany. Holmes poured in 18 of his career-high 34 points in the first half to help MSU pull out a shocking 97-94 win at Arkansas. Holmes posted 31 points at Loyola, 19 in the first half, and he converted 12-of-12 free throws. Holmes scored 16 of his game-high 24 points in the second half to led the Bears over Coppin State. Holmes was 0-for-9 from 3-point territory against Towson, but still finished the game with 20 points. Holmes is currently averaging 23.7 ppg and currently ranks No. 2 in points scored (356) and No. 6 in the nation in scoring...he has ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation (24.8 ppg) prior to the Robert Morris contest on Jan. 4th. THOMPSON S HOSPITALITY Morgan State sophomore forward Kevin Thompson was named to the Freshmen Mid-Major All-America team by Collegeinsider.com at the end of the last season. Thompson became the first Bear ever to be selected to the team. Thompson was a key contributor as a redshirt freshman and helped the Bears capture their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship in three decades and earned the program s second consecutive postseason appearance and the first-ever NCAA tournament. The Walbrook High product averaged 8.9 points per game and was one of the top rebounders in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference averaging 7.1 boards per game. He recorded 15 double-figure games and posted seven double-doubles (points & rebounds) on the season and was selected to the 2009 MEAC Rookie Team. He posted a career-high of 23 points and 25 rebounds and was selected as the MEAC Player of the Week (12/27/09). Thompson posted his 10th double-double of the season (16th career) when he posted a game-high 17 rebounds with 13 points and two blocks against Long Island at the Dr Pepper Classic in Chattanooga, Tennessee... as a result of his outstanding performance during the week, he was honored for the third time as the MEAC's Defensive Player of the Week. Thompson has led Morgan State in rebounding 13 times in 2009-10 and 29 times in his career. "Big Red" is currently ranked No. 3 in the nation in rebounds (12.7 rpg)... He has ranked as high as No. 1 in the nation in rebounds (13.3 rpg) prior to the Robert Morris contest on Jan. 4th. MID-MAJOR COACH OF THE YEAR Less than three weeks after taking the Bears to their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship in three decades and earning the program s second consecutive postseason appearance and the first-ever NCAA tournament appearance, Todd Bozeman received the Hugh Durham Award, which recognizes the outstanding coach at the midmajor level. The award, which is voted on by a 20-member selection panel that includes current and former head coaches and is chaired by Hugh Durham, is presented annually at the Final Four to the top Mid- Major Coach in America. Surprisingly Morgan State was picked to finish first in the MEAC s preseason vote, despite losing the league s Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and starting point guard to graduation. The League s coaches and sports information directors were right on target with their vote, as the Bears captured their second consecutive regular season title, won the MEAC Championship, and finished with a 13-3 conference record and a 23-12 overall mark. In just three seasons, Bozeman has already won the most Division I games in school history. Bozeman, who was named the MEAC Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season, was a finalist for the 2009 award along with Duggar Baucom (VMI), Randy Bennett (St. Mary s), Ed Conroy (The Citadel), Brad Greenberg (Radford), Ben Jacobson (Northern Iowa), Saul Phillips (North Dakota State), J.P. Piper (Nicholls State), Randy Rahe (Weber State), and Brad Stevens (Butler). In 2005 the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Coach of the Year award was renamed in honor of Hugh Durham who retired at the end of the 2004-05 season. Durham is one of just twelve coaches to have led two different programs to the NCAA Final Four (Florida State, 1972 & Georgia, 1983). He is the only coach to lead both teams to their only Final Four appearance. MSU LEGEND DIES - THE HUMAN ERASER Marvin Webster, a fierce shot-blocking center who helped lead the Seattle SuperSonics to the 1978 NBA Finals, was found dead in Tulsa, Okla. He was 56. Known as The Human Eraser, Webster spent nine seasons in the NBA. He averaged 16.1 points during the SuperSonics playoff run in 1978. He signed with the Knicks the following season and played six years in New York. After playing 333 consecutive games, Webster missed the next two seasons because of hepatitis before making a failed comeback with Milwaukee during the 1986-87 season. He played in 15 games as a Bucks reserve before retiring. He played in college at Morgan State where he averaged eight blocked shots a game while taking the Bears to the 1974 N.C.A.A. Division II championship as a junior. He averaged 21 points and 22.4 rebounds a game and was named Division II player of the year. His first pro season was with Denver of the ABA in 1975. He also played with the Nuggets after they joined the NBA the following year. 2008-09 MEAC Champs 2009 MEAC Tournament Champs Mid-Major Coach of the Year His best statistical year came with Seattle in 1977-78, when he averaged 14 points and finished ninth in the NBA with 12.6 rebounds and 1.9 blocks a game. The Sonics lost the finals to Washington in seven games that year, one season before winning their only NBA title. His son, Marvin Webster Jr., played college basketball at Temple but died during his sophomore year at 18 after a heart attack. MSU s retired Marvin Webster s number and his jersey is hanging in Hill Field House. MSU S NCAA HOOPS HISTORY Morgan State s historic run to the Big Dance last season actually marked the second time in school history the Bears had participated in an NCAA Tournament. The Bears competed in the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Bears are currently among the MEAC leaders in turnover margin currently ranked No. 4. (+0.14). Oddly enough, the Bears have posted a 6-2 record when posting more turnovers than their opponent WINNING THE BOARD GAMES MSU has outrebounded seven of its first 15 opponents so far this season. The Bears have posted a 5-2 mark when outrebounding its opponents (UMBC, Arkansas, Coppin State, Manhattan & Towson). Shrugging off a subpar performance in a loss at Robert Morris, the Morgan State star scored 23 points, however it was Baylor who posted a 79-63 victory over the Bears on Wednesday night. The night belonged to Ekpe Udoh who led Baylor with 18 points, 17 rebounds and 10 blocks. The performance marked the fifth triple double in school history and Baylor improved to 12-1 for the season. Tweety Carter and Quincy Acie scored 16 points apiece and LaceDarius Dunn added 14 points for the host Bears. "Baylor is a good team and a good program, said Morgan State coach Todd Bozeman. Their frontline is huge. It is like an NBA frontline. (Ekpe Udoh) will be playing 82 games (in the NBA) at some point, he is an outstanding player. He is very dominant and made his presence felt. The Big 12 is probably one of the top two leagues in the country right now and Baylor will get their share of wins." Baylor hit 2-of-3 three-pointers to help the build a 47-40 lead in the first 3 minutes of the second half. Morgan State (8-7, 1-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) then pulled to 49-42 on a 3-pointer by Troy Smith, but Baylor answered in a big way. Baylor exploded out on a 19-3 run to open up a 20 point lead at 68-48 with 10 minutes left to play. Baylor fans were treated to an alleyoop dunk by Udoh, a 3-pointer by Carter and a thunderous slam dunk by Acie as the Bears pulled away. Morgan State just didn t have enough fire power to close the gap tonight. Baylor outrebounded the Bears by a 43-33 margin and shot 47.7 percent from the field, while Morgan State finished 23-of-66 (34.8%) from the field. Kevin Thompson led the Bears of the glass with 12 rebounds to go along with 9 points. Sean Thomas and Troy Smith each scored 7 points. In the first half we made a good run for it, said Bozeman. Holmes carried us in the 1st half and we did a good job by shooting 50 percent from the field. Holmes, one of the nation s top scorers, shot 7-of-16 from the floor and scored 12 of Morgan State s first 15 points of the game to help keep the Bears close. Baylor held a 23-16 lead midway through the first half, but Morgan State put together a 14-4 run and a Troy Smith 3-pointer tied the ballgame at 27-27 with 5 minutes left in the first half. Morgan State trailed 39-36 at halftime. Upon graduation, Troy ended up playing in Colorado at Northeast Junior College before transferring to Morgan State this season. The senior is currently averaging 8.0 ppg and 3.3 rpg and is providing productive minutes for the Bears so far this season. Smith recorded a career-high 16 points (5-9 FG) in 2 minutes against Long Island in the consolation round of the Dr Pepper Classic hosted by the University of Chattanooga. Troy was inserted into the starting lineup for the Eastern Kentucky game (Dec. 29) and has been a starter ever since... in the 4 games he 's started, Troy is averaging a shade over 12 ppg. The Lady Colonials currently hold a 3-9 record. Prior to taking the head coaching job, Bozeman was the assistant coach at GW for three seasons. As a player, he led Fairleigh Dickinson University to a conference title and the NCAA Tournament his senior season. THE "BALTIMORE BULLIES" There s no doubt Morgan State is aggressive when it come down to rebounding the basketball and putting up numbers inside the painted area. The "Baltimore Bullies" lead the MEAC in rebounding and have controlled the offensive glass, gaining opportunity after opportunity. The Bears have developed a knack for creating multiple shot opportunities during a single offensive possession. Despite having one of their worst performances of the season, the Bears were still only outrebounded by Big Ten opponent Minnesota by five boards... The Bears ripped down a season-high 23 offensive rebounds... Kevin Thompson recorded a career-high 19 boards in 36 minutes. They outrebounded Coppin State 47-31, including 18 offensive rebounds and 24 points off of second chance opportunities. They finished with 15 offensive rebounds and outscored Arkansas 20-5 on secondchance points. The Bears recorded a season-high 58 rebounds against Towson, outrebounding the Tigers by a 58-31 margin, including 30 offensive rebounds MSU collected a season-high 19 offensive rebounds at Albany in the season-opener on November 13, 2009. MSU set a MEAC season-high with 11 blocked shots at UMBC... Junior center Rodney Stokes tallied a career-high 7 blocks during the game CUB SCOUTING Remember, DeWayne Jackson is a true freshman. The young forward from Bowie (Md.), has been pretty impressive in an unexpected starting role so far, scoring the basketball and playing pretty good defense. Jackson started in every game so far this season, becoming the first freshman under head coach Todd Bozeman to have started from the beginning of the season. 2008-09 MEAC Champs 2009 MEAC Tournament Champs Mid-Major Coach of the Year It is worth noting Jackson is the third leading scorer on the squad and is currently averaging 8.1 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 21.9 mpg, and leads the squad by shooting 43 percent from 3-point territory. He s as good as anybody on the team in terms of perimeter defense and is a match-up problem for most teams due to his length and his ability to shoot the 3-ball. Jackson has scored double-figures in seven of the Bears last 15 games, including a season-best 21 points (4-8 3FG) at #22 Louisville. Jackson bounced back from a zero point (0-2 FG) outing against Eastern Kentucky and finished with 15 points (6-10 FG) and seven rebounds against Long Island. Jackson leads the team in fouls (63), and has fouled out of eight of the Bears first 15 games. HIGH OCTANE OFFENSE Morgan State s offense has been sizzling over the past few games, which played a major role in victories over SEC opponent Arkansas (Nov. 24) and MAAC opponent Manhattan) Dec. 12). Morgan State is 7-4 when scoring 70 or more points, with losses coming at Louisville (81-90), Appalachian State in overtime (92-93) and a tough loss at Robert Morris (78-75). Over the 15 games, Morgan State is averaging 76.7 points on.409 shooting with 12.7 assists, six 80-point performances and a 1.0 assist/turnover ratio. CRUCIAL IN CRUNCH-TIME The final 3 minutes has been critical in the Bears success this season Morgan State is 7-2 this season when leading with 3 minutes to go and 1-5 when trailing with 3 minutes left. WIRE-TO-WIRE With their 83-74 victory over Manhattan December 12th, the Bears posted their 3rd wire-to-wire victory of the season. MORGAN STATE BASKETBALL 2009-10 SEASON OUTLOOK During the 2008-09 season, Morgan State head coach Todd Bozeman guided the Bears to the best season and their first MEAC championship since 1977. Bozeman also became the first coach to win back-to-back regular season titles, and the first to guide his team to back-to-back postseason tournaments, including the school s first appearance in the NIT and the NCAA s Big Dance. I think it s significant not only was it the first time for the school to go to the NCAA tournament, said Bozeman, but that Morgan earned a No. 15 seed, instead of being in the play-in game. That says a lot in terms of respect for the program and our non-conference schedule. The Bears completed the 2008-09 season with a 13-3 conference record, 23-12 overall mark, Bozeman was selected for the second consecutive season as the MEAC Coach of the Year and he was named as the National Mid-Major Coach of the Year which is voted on by a 20-member selection panel that includes current and former head coaches and is chaired by Hugh Durham. In his third year at the helm, Bozeman recorded wins over Maryland (ACC), DePaul (BIG EAST), and Marshall (C-USA), and ranked 23rd in Mid-Major Top 25 poll. MSU also became the first Historically Black College & University (HBCU) to participate in the ESPN BracketBusters where they defeated Towson (CAA) (80-64). The Bears concluded their historic season with a tough loss to No. 2 seed Oklahoma in the NCAA Tournament South Regionals in Kansas City. Last year was a very significant year for the program in terms of growth, said Bozeman. I thought that we made major strides in our quest to continue to build this program and take it to national prominence. Headed into the 2009-10 campaign, Morgan State s team is once again bursting with potential and the coaching staff feels this may possibly be the most talented squad they have had since Bozeman became the Head Coach. The Bears return a core of seasoned veterans, including NABC All-District guard Reggie Holmes and the arrival of 2008-09 MEAC Champs 2009 MEAC Tournament Champs Mid-Major Coach of the Year five skilled newcomers, the program is poised to once again be in the hunt for a championship and postseason play. The returner s gained valuable experience from last season, Bozeman explained. There s nothing like the experience of winning your conference (MEAC) and also playing in the NCAA tournament and the confidence that you get for being one of the 65 teams. The Bears had three key departures from last season s squad, and each one played a key role to the team s success over the last few years. Versatile forward Marquise Kately was selected to the NABC All-District First Team, while guard Rogers Barnes led the team in steals with his tenacious defense and point guard Jermaine Itchy Bolden led the MEAC in assists (4.9 apg) and could have easily been selected as the 2009 MEAC Tournament MVP for his exemplary performance during the Bears Championship run. I think we will be able to say we added to a solid foundation because of those guys. Those guys will always be able to say they were the first team to take Morgan State to the Big Dance. With the most skilled Morgan State roster of the Bozeman Era, a muchimproved home record, a marquee schedule and ever-increasing attention from Baltimore and Metropolitan area elite basketball prospects, there is much to be excited about on 1700 Cold Spring Lane. However, Bozeman knows it will be consistent performances from his team s leaders that will dictate how the squad finishes in March. THE BACKCOURT Morgan State s backcourt will take on a different look with the departure of starting point guard Jermaine Itchy Bolden, who wrapped up the Bears historic season with 170 assists, and captured the school s single-season assist record previously currently held by Lorenzo Hutchinson (146-1998). The Baltimore native completed his career ranked 6th among Morgan State s career assist leaders with 252 assists in just two seasons. The point guard position will be between returning sophomore Sean Thomas and heralded newcomer Danny Smith. Smith was a standout at Woodlawn High School before heading out to play at Western Nebraska C.C. Lightningquick and relentless on the defensive end, Smith is the type of floor general that can help the Bears remain at the top of the MEAC. Smith spent the entire offseason on campus - working on his game and bonding with his new teammates - and one of these young men will be ready to take on the mantle of leadership. Danny is a very talented player who can run a team, score the ball and is great in transition. We re looking at his stability offensively and defensively, said Bozeman. Smith averaged 11.7 ppg and 2.9 assists and 1.7 steals. Thomas, a All-Met player at Gwynn Park HS, is a steady, hard-working guard who played in 24 games last season. He gave us a solid freshman year and will to continue to grow and get better. He s an aggressive point-guard that attacks both offense and defense. Troy Smith will add senior leadership to the backcourt. Smith, who enters his second season after transfering from Northeast Junior College, is a tough competitor and will provide a scoring punch with his strong perimeter play. Smith played in 30 contests last season, coming off the bench to average 2.6 points per outing. The Baltimore native is expected to provide excitement on both ends of the floor with his high energy play and tenacious defense. Reggie Holmes is arguably one of the best rebounding guard and the best pure shooter in the conference. Holmes, an All-MEAC first team selection and 2009 MEAC Tournament MVP, finished the season with 587 points, the most points in a single season since 1978-79 (Garcia Hopkins; 642 pts). Holmes also accumulated 1,255 points, good enough for 13th on the all-time career scoring chart. The Baltimore product also holds the single season record for made threepointers (99) and for career three-pointers (208). With one more season remaining, Holmes could finish his career up as one of the top three scorers in MSU s school history. Holmes 16.8 average last season was the best at MSU since 1989. Two talented newcomers round out the Bears backcourt. Joe Davis is a transfer from Cleveland State where he played both guard positions. Joe will provide scoring for us and make a significant contribution, said Bozeman. He was a double-digit 8 We Grind 2009-10 Morgan State Bears Basketball

scorer off the bench at Cleveland State and he already has Division I experience, so hopefully his experience will be to our advantage. Jarrod Denard should also push for playing time in the back court. Jarrod is a guard that can play every position on the perimeter and he will obviously make a significant contribution for us as well. The duo both possess adept ball-handling and playmaking skills and will provide stability in the backcourt. Major contributions are expected from Morgan State s small forward position, particularly from newcomer DeWayne Jackson. The 6-foot-8 swingman true freshman from Bowie HS, can play every position on the floor and has the ability to defend all positions as well. Jackson is a high flying, scoring, athletic wing that will provide a nice scoring punch for us. THE FRONTCOURT Morgan State returns one of the most consistent frontcourts in the league. Sophomore forward Kevin Thompson leads a deep crop of returnees, coming off an outstanding freshman campaign in which he averaged 8.9 ppg, 7.1 rpg. His efforts were good enough to get him selected to the 2009 MEAC All- Rookie Team and a spot on the Collegeinsider.com Freshman Mid-Major All-America Team, and he will be looked upon to contribute profoundly in the post this season. The Walbrook HS product recorded 16 double-figure games and posted six double-doubles (points & rebounds) on the season and will continue to be one of the most efficient low-post scorers on the team and in the conference and should continue dominating the glass during the upcoming season. Junior forward Rodney Stokes continues to develop at 6-10 presence inside, and will look to log heavy minutes in the post this season. The Glen Burnie, Md. product started in 22 games and averaged 4.7 ppg and 3.8 rpg and is playing with better quickness, and more importantly, more confidence. Sophomore Ameer Ali, who improved all season long as a redshirt freshman and played in 22 games and averaged 3 rebounds per contest. The Philadelphia product has a very good low-post game and is expected to bring maturity and leadership to the frontcourt. 2008-09 MEAC Champs 2009 MEAC Tournament Champs Mid-Major Coach of the Year Senior center Buford Foote returns to the Bears frontcourt as well. Foote is a long athletic defender who will see action along with fellow forward John Long, a 6-foot-6, tough and rugged rebounder. A number of players will have an opportunity to fill out the starting lineup. Freshman Anthony Anderson is a physical low post player who has a high basketball I.Q. Anthony will provide depth in the post, he s 6 10 and he s rugged Gene Johnson, who was medically redshirted last season, returns as an athletic forward that will also provide experience and leadership to the Bears frontcourt. These guys will provide stability for us on the front line and give us an opportunity to continue to rebound and defend in the post which has always been a goal for us. THE SCHEDULE The Bears open the 2009-10 season against two America East opponents when they travel to New York to play the University of Albany on Nov. 13, followed two days later by UMBC at the RAC Arena in Baltimore on Nov. 15. Morgan State participate in the Hall of Fame Classic in which the Bears will play host to East Tennessee for the Bears homeopener at Hill Field House on Nov. 19 before going on the road for their next six games. During the road stretch, the Bears will play at Louisville (Nov. 22), Arkansas (Nov. 24), Loyola (Dec. 1), Coppin State (Dec. 5) and Minnesota (Dec. 8). Morgan State returns home for two-games against MAAC opponent Manhattan (Dec. 12) and by CAA opponent cross-town rival Towson on Dec. 22. The Bears will travel to Chattanooga, Tennessee to participate in the Dr. Pepper Classic hosted by Tennessee-Chattanooga (Dec. 29-30). The Bears start the New Year at Robert Morris in Pittsburgh on Jan. 4, followed by a flight to Texas to tip-off with Baylor on Jan. 6, and then MEAC conference play gets underway with a matchup at Howard (Jan. 9). Morgan State will also compete in an ESPN BracketBuster for the second season in a row. The game will be either on Feb. 19 or Feb. 20. That s very significant for our program and we want to continue to represent the conference in a first class manner. The 2010 MEAC Tournament takes place at the Lawrence Joel Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem, North Carolina from Monday, March 8 to Saturday, March 13. FINAL THOUGHTS The Bears have proven over the last three years under Bozeman they are a team that should not be taken lightly in non-conference play. They are also a team that will continue to put itself in a position to win the conference championship and quite possibly record its second bid to the coveted NCAA Big Dance. I think we ll be very competitive once again this season, Bozeman said. The program lost significant contributors, but I think this will be another very competitive year. 2008-09 MEAC Champs 2009 MEAC Tournament Champs Mid-Major Coach of the Year ALBANY, N.Y. Reggie Holmes scored 23 points and DeWayne Jackson s steal and slam dunk put his team ahead in the final five minutes in leading Morgan State to a 69-65 victory over UAlbany on Friday evening at SEFCU Arena. In a second half that featured five lead changes and four ties, UAlbany (0-2) reversed a 46-42 deficit with 11 unanswered. Tim Ambrose, a 6-foot junior who had 14 of his 21 points after the break, drew his team even with a pair of free throws. Freshman guard Mike Black followed with a driving layup and a three-point play when he was fouled while converting a fastbreak opportunity. Ambrose s jumper from left of the lane gave his club a 53-46 advantage with 12:30 remaining. Morgan State (1-0) still trailed by four with less than six minutes to play, but regrouped when Holmes canned one of his three 3-point field goals after an offensive rebound. Jackson s steal and dunk put his team ahead, 61-60, with 4:23 left. Still leading by one, Holmes connected on a one-hander as he curled into the lane. Jackson came up with another steal and sank a 19-footer from just inside the top of the arc for a 67-62 lead with 1:32 remaining. The Great Danes were still within one possession in the closing seconds, but Jackson sealed the outcome by splitting a pair of free throws. The Bears, who made their first NCAA appearance last year after winning the Mid- Eastern Athletic Conference championship, built a 27-16 margin in the first half. Kevin Thompson, a 6-foot-8 sophomore who totaled 15 points and nine rebounds, scored on a follow shot to give his squad its biggest lead. The Great Danes, who opened their season with a loss at No. 25 Syracuse four days earlier, came back to tie the contest at 33 apiece by halftime. Will Harris, a senior who netted 18 points, hit a bank shot in transition before Logan Aronhalt drilled his second 3-pointer of the period to close the gap to 33-31. Harris later made a jumper from the foul line that evened the score. Because down 42-24, the Bears scored 19 consecutive points in the second half to help turn the game around in a 72-57 victory over the UMBC Retrievers at the RAC this afternoon. MSU (2-0) was not shooting very well at some moments. In fact, it took just under five minutes for the Bears to score its first points. They managed to score just one field goal in the first eight minutes of the game. Bozeman ended up yanking the starting five off the floor and replaced them with a fresh five. The Bears shot 22 percent (6-27 FG) for the first half. They missed all six shots from three-point range as well. I was really disappointed with the team at halftime," said Bozeman. "We just kind of lost our way. We didn t have the focus. Sometimes that happens when you re growing as a team. This team is not last year s team. They have to find their own way. UMBC (0-1) was getting into their offense without much of a problem. They shot 41 percent from the field in the first half, held a 25-18 advantage on the boards and led 34-22 at the half. The Retrievers outscored MSU 8-2 in the opening moments of the second half and looked like they would put the game away early. Chauncey Gilliam's steal and lay-up helped give UMBC a commanding 42-24 with 17:15 left. However, UMBC got into foul trouble early and put the Bears were in the bonus just five minutes into the half. Morgan switched to a zone defense that helped ignite a 19-0 run over a five minute span. Sophomore forward Kevin Thompson got the big run started with a three-point play. Then Reggie Holmes, who scored 23 points on the night, took over by scoring 13 points during the run. A driving lay-up by Holmes put the Bears on top for the first time at 43-42 with 12:13 remaining. We have a lot of depth, said Bozeman. This afternoon, it played to our advantage in terms of fighting to come back. Reggie Holmes score a career high 30 points Score by periods 1st 2nd Total ETSU 24 37 61 Morgan State 34 38 72 BALTIMORE, Md. -- Morgan State couldn't play a much better first half, and East Tennessee State would ve liked to have had its leading point guard on the floor, instead of on the bench in warmups. The Bears beat ETSU 72-61 on Thursday night and senior guard Reggie Holmes poured in 18 of his career-high 30 points in the first half. The win against the Buccaneers improved MSU s record to 3-0 for the first time since 1978. It was a good game and I'm happy we got the win, said 4th year MSU coach Todd Bozeman. But we still have to grow as a team and become more disciplined. Everything MSU tried worked, whether it was 3-point shooting or scoring inside the paint. Meanwhile, ETSU played without starting 6-foot-6 senior point guard Mike Smith and couldn't get anything to go in the basket. MSU shot 54.2 percent from the field in the first half (13-of-24), including 6-of-9 from the free throw line. The Buccaneers were 5-for-27 from the field in the first 20 minutes -- and they had six turnovers. MSU outscored the Bucs 14-4 in the opening 10 minutes of the contest behind relentless man-to-man defense and never really looked back. Holmes had two 3-pointers and his short pull-up in the paint extended the Bears lead to 32-14 with 3:45 remaining in the first half. The win improved MSU s record at Hill Field House to 25-5 since 2006, and the Bears have won 5 of its last six non-conference meetings, including wins against Maryland, Towson and UMBC. Rodney Stokes added 12 points and shot a perfect 6-for-6 from the field, while newcomer Joe Davis chipped in 8 points. The Bears lead ballooned to 64-42 with just under 8 minutes remaining in the contest. Tommy Hubbard paced ETSU with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Justin Tubbs finished with 16 points. Holmes was sent to the stripe with 2:00 minutes left when he was fouled by Michael Williams. His two free throws gave him a career-high with 30 points. His previous high was 29 points at DePaul last year. Setting my career-high felt real good, Holmes said of his performance, but as a team, we need to work on finishing out the game and work on our defense. Reggie is really playing well, which is a good thing because this is his team, said Bozeman. He leads out team, so we expect that from him. But overall we just have to get better defensively. 10 We Grind 2009-10 Morgan State Bears Basketball

Morgan State played throughout most of today s game with their leading scorer sitting on the bench in foul trouble. Senior guard Reggie Holmes, who entered the game fresh off a career-high 30-point performance against East Tennessee State on Thursday night, scored 9 points (4-12 FG) before fouling out against nationally ranked Louisville (No. 22 ESPN/USA Today, No. 20 AP). Despite missing their leading scorer on the floor, the Bears fought hard before eventually falling to the Cardinals 90-81 at Freedom Hall on Sunday afternoon. The loss snapped MSU s 3-game winning streak, and its best start in 31 years. Freshman swingman DeWayne Jackson led Morgan State (2-1) with a season-high 21 points, and sophomore Kevin Thompson notched his second double-double of the season with 16 points and 15 rebounds for the defending MEAC champions, who kept things interesting late into the second half. MSU used an 11-2 run midway through the second half and a Thompson basket in the lane helped trim Louisville s lead to 65-60 with 9:43 remaining in the game. Less than a minute later, Holmes was hit with his 4th foul of the contest and was sent to the bench. The Bears drew within 74-67 with 5:23 remaining, but Louisville countered with a 10-2 run highlighted by a dunk from freshman forward Rakeem Buckles. Samardo Samuels scored 23 points to go with 12 rebounds, Preston Knowles added 13 points, and Edgar Sosa had 12 points for the Cardinals (3-0), who struggled to put away the Bears. The Cardinals held on behind solid free-throw shooting. Louisville made 33-of-41 (80.5 pct.) from the line, while the Bears went just 18-of- 24(75.0 pct.) from the stripe. The Bears went toe-to-toe with Louisville on the glass the entire game and was outrebounded by a slim 45-43 margin. Reggie Holmes scored a career-high 34 points, including a pair of free throws with 6.3 seconds remaining to lead Morgan State to a 97-94 upset victory against Arkansas on Tuesday night at Bud Walton Arena before 7,468 fans. Prior to tonight, the first and only time the teams had squared-off against each other was on December 13, 1986, when Nolan Richardson's Razorbacks ended up dropping the Bears 106-57 in Fayetteville. Rotnei Clarke missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the Razorbacks after hitting a pair of 3-pointers to keep the game within reach with 14.1 seconds and 6.5 seconds remaining. Clarke finished with a team-high 26 points. Mike Washington added 21 points and Marshawn Powell and Julysses Nobles scored 17 points each for the Razorbacks (2-2). Arkansas shot 57.1 percent (16-28 FG) in the first half, but halftime adjustments helped the Bears limit the Razorbacks to just 11 field goals in the second half, five of which were made during the closing 4 minutes of the contest. Morgan State (4-1) hit 34-of-41 (82.9 percent) free throws. Holmes sunk 13-of-15 from the line, including the final four from the stripe to help the Bears notch their 6th non-conference victory in 8 tries. I m proud of my guys it was a hard fought victory, said 4th year MSU coach Todd Bozeman. I thought in the first half we fouled a lot (16 fouls), and we just came off of a game where a team shot 41 free throws on us. It looked as though we were going in that direction, but they shot 45 and we ended up shooting 41. Bozeman got strong performances by a number of his players. Arkansas outscored the Bears 38-30 inside the paint, however the Bears held a commanding 39-26 advantage on the boards and scored 20 points off of second chance opportunities. Sophomore Kevin Thompson, a 6-foot-8 Baltimore product, led the Bears in pounding the glass for a game-high 14 rebounds to go along with 10 points. Freshman swingman DeWayne Jackson chipped in 8 of his 10 points in the second half. Score by periods 1st 2nd OT Total Morgan State 37 45 10 92 Appalachian State 34 48 11 93 BOONE, N.C. The Mountaineers hosted South Carolina State earlier in the day during the first round of the Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs and came away with a 20-13 win. ASU capped the day by posting a narrow home basketball victory against Morgan State in the first matchup between the teams. Jeremy Booth hit an off-balanced three-pointer as ASU rallied from seven points down to send the ballgame into overtime and Andre Williamson hit a clutch free throw at the end to help the Mountaineers pull-off a 93-92 win on Saturday at Holmes Center. Senior guard Reggie Holmes had a game-high 23 points and sophomore Kevin Thompson added 21 points and 15 rebounds, but the Bears were unable to convert critical free throws down the stretch. Kevin Thompson added 16 points and 14 rebounds, while DeWayne Jackson chipped in 11. Loyola guard Brett Harvey scored five of his 15 points during a 7-0 Greyhounds run seven minutes into the second half, helping the Greyhounds turn a one-point lead into eight. Jamal Barney was a spark off of the bench as he led the Greyhounds with a season-high 22 points. Starters Harvey (15) and forward Anthony Winbush (13) were the only other Greyhounds in double figures. Morgan State careless turnovers helped the Greyhounds engineer its largest lead of the night, and Harvey hit a 3-pointer to give his team a 57-49 advantage with 11:53 remaining in the game. Loyola (4-2) extended its lead to 65-54 when Barney scored on a layup with just under 7 minutes to go. Holmes helped trim the lead to 65-60 on a pair of free throws with just over six left, but it was as close as the Bears would get. Morgan State outrebounded the Greyhounds by a 41-37 margin, but the Bears had a hard time keeping Loyola outside of the paint. Loyola ended up scoring 42 points inside the lane and the bench outscored MSU 32-1. MSU raced out to a 7-1 lead in the opening minutes, and much of the capacity crowd was silenced as the Greyhounds were looking to notch its first home game since winning their homeopener on Nov. 13th against Vermont. The Greyhounds answered with a 10-2 run and Brian Rudolph s layup gave Loyola its first lead of the ballgame at 11-9 with 10:99 left to play in the first half. Reggie Holmes scored his 19th point of the game when he hit a 3-pointer with 33 seconds remaining, but Brett Harvey nailed a 3-pointer as time expired to give the Greyhounds a 35-34 advantage at the break. Loyola struggled from the free throw line where they managed to convert 20-of-39 (51.3 percent) from the stripe, while MSU shot 90.9 percent (20-22). Saturday marked a new era in Coppin State basketball with the grand opening of The Physical Education Complex (PEC), but it was the Bears who ended up making history on the night by beating the Eagles 80-67 in front of a crowd of 3,189. Reggie Holmes poured in 16 of his game-high 24 points during a second half surge to help Morgan State snap a two-game losing skid and record its fourth consecutive win against the Eagles. MSU (5-3, 1-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) freshman forward DeWayne Jackson was the first person to score a basket in the new facility when he converted a basket and was fouled by Coppin s George Jackson in the opening moments. The play jump-started an 11-2 run by the Bears, six scored by Holmes, and MSU never trailed from that point forward. Holmes, who entered the game ranked No. 9 in the nation in scoring (24.7 ppg), recorded his seventh game with 20 or more points in eight contests. He (Reggie) didn t panic or force shots, said MSU head coach Todd Bozeman. That s something that he s gotten better and better with every year. He came in as a freshman and he d take a three from the parking lot, when we needed him to go all the way in. Now, Reggie has a mid-range game and he has more patience. That s just a sign of maturity. Morgan State (5-3, 1-0 MEAC) absolutely dominated the paint. The Bears outrebounded their rivals 47-31 and outscored the Eagles in second chance opportunities 24-11. MSU forward Kevin Thompson stepped up and produced his sixth double-double of the season with 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Jackson added 11 points and a season-high nine rebounds. CSU (4-3, 0-1 MEAC) cut the deficit to 24-21 when Goldsberry hit a foul shot with 4:41 remaining. But the Eagles struggled inside as they couldn t convert their lay-ups or tip-ins. The Bears size and length posed a problem all night for the Eagles guards Lenny Young, Kareem Brown and George Jackson. The starting trio shot a combined 4-for-29 from the field and 2-for 13 from 3-point territory. Minnesota was ranked No. 16 before two losses earlier in the season knocked them out of the Top 25, but they certainly looked like a team that was not going to take the Bears lightly. Blake Hoffarber led three Golden Gophers in double-figures with 18 points to lead Minnesota to a 94-64 win over Morgan State Tuesday night in Williams Arena. Hoffarber made 8-of-11 shots to lead the Gophers to a 50 percent (28-of-56) shooting night. Reggie Holmes led MSU with a game-high 26 points, but struggled against a Gopher defense that was zeroed in on stopping the No. 4 scorer in the nation (24.6 ppg). Holmes started the ballgame by shooting 1-for- 10, and finished by making 9-of- a career-high 27 shot attempts. Kevin Thompson posted 17 points and a career-high 19 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season. Troy Smith added eight points and three steals. The Bears shot 25 percent (8-31) and had nine turnovers in the first half. I thought that we were a little impatient; I don t know if it was jitters with some of the guys sometimes it happens like that, said MSU head coach Todd Bozeman. We didn t get any good shots to start the game and started in a hole and it was tough to get out of that. Minnesota (6-3) took control of the game in the first half thanks to their depth and balance. The Gophers shot a blistering 53 percent (16-of-30) before the break, including 5-of-1-3-pointers en route to a 43-21 halftime lead. The Gophers Lawrence Westbrook scored 14 points, Damien Johnson pitched in 11 points and Al Nolen dished out a game-high six assists. Everyone on the Minnesota s roster scored. MSU (5-4) had their hands full early on in the contest and was more than a little bit out of sync as a Hoffarber 3-pointer gave the Gophers a 18-0 advantage within the first five minutes of the ballgame. MSU scored its first basket of the ball game when Rodney Stokes converted a putback at 12:25. The Bears committed 33 fouls and sent the Gophers to the free line where they shot 33-for-46 (71.7 percent) from the stripe, while MSU shot 73.1 percent (16-26). 12 We Grind 2009-10 Morgan State Bears Basketball

Reggie Holmes scored a game-high 31 points and helped Morgan State open a 10-point lead midway through the second half, and the Bears held off a late rally by Manhattan to win 83-74 Saturday at Hill Field House. The Bears improved to 6-4 for the season after notching its first win against the Jaspers, who beat MSU 61-60 last season on a last second basket in the first meeting between the teams. Any win in Division I is a good win, and I m happy about that, said MSU coach Todd Bozeman. Manhattan is a good program, but I m not happy with the way we re playing. Defensively, we can play better. Holmes, who entered the ballgame ranked No. 4 in the nation in scoring (24.7 ppg), seemed to find his stroke early in the ballgame and as a result Manhattan suffered. Holmes lit the Jaspers up for 18 points in the second half, scoring six points during a 13-4 run that gave MSU a 46-39 lead. The Baltimore product finished the ballgame by shooting 10-for- 17 from the field and 4-for-6 from 3-point territory and Manhattan never seemed to have an answer for him. Kevin Thompson, a 6-foot-8 sophomore, collected his eighth double-double of the season by posting 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with four blocked shots. Troy Smith had 12 points and added three steals and three assists off of the bench. MSU s defense limited the Jaspers to 37.1 percent shooting from the field (23-62) and 4-for- 15 (26.7 percent) from beyond the arc. Manhattan (5-5), who have lost four of their last five games, had five players score in doublefigures. Senior guard Daryl Crawford paced the Jaspers with 24 points (8-8 FT), while Laurence Jolicoeur added 15, Antoine Pearson had 12, and Brandon Adams and Rico Picket chipped in 10 each. The Bears bounced back from a subpar shooting performance at Minnesota (29.6 percent) and completed the game by shooting 46.2 percent (24-52) from the floor and 7-for-12 (58.3 percent) from 3-point territory. Morgan State overcame an early 13-point deficit and withstood a late charge knockoff Towson 87-80 on Tuesday night at Hill Field House. Sophomore Kevin Thompson had a stellar performance for the Bears and finished with career-highs of 23 points and 25 rebounds, who improved its record to 7-4 overall and 27-5 at home under head coach Todd Bozeman. Reggie Holmes, who entered the night ranked second in the nation in scoring (25.1 ppg), finished with 20 after scoring just four in the first half. "He was huge," Bozeman said. "You win games with defense and rebounding, and he's been a yeoman on the boards." Towson (3-6) now has lost seven straight on the road, dating to last season. Early, it appeared the Tigers were primed to break that streak. Led by the perimeter shooting of guard Josh Thornton (21 points), who knocked down four of his first five 3-point attempts, the Tigers ran out to a 22-9 lead after the first 7:26, threatening to turn the game into a rout. Morgan, however, settled down defensively, and quickly climbed back into the game by forcing poor shots and taking over the glass. Still trailing by 13, the Bears switched to a quicker four-guard offense and embarked on an 18-2 run over the next four minutes, taking their first lead on consecutive three-pointers by DeWayne Jackson and Troy Smith. Jackson and Smith added 11 points apiece for the Bears, while Danny Smith recorded a gamehigh 10 assists. "They were beating us on the 50-50 plays and energy plays," Bozeman said. "We weren't playing with any focus or sense of urgency. The group that made that run was big for us." Thompson, meanwhile, was a game-changer in the post, using his broad body and sound technique to dominate rebounding at both ends, often giving his team two or three chances in a possession. Down by double-digits, the Tigers rallied late, getting to within two when Troy Franklin stripped Danny Smith near midcourt and converted at the other end with 55 seconds left. But the Bears then closed it out when Thompson grabbed a strong rebound to start a fast break, which ended with Jackson's dunk and three-point play. "The Big 12 is probably one of the top two leagues in the country right now and Baylor will get their share of wins." Baylor hit 2-of-3 three-pointers to help the build a 47-40 lead in the first 3 minutes of the second half. Morgan State (8-7, 1-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) then pulled to 49-42 on a 3-pointer by Troy Smith, but Baylor answered in a big way.
