SUU is set to host Ohio and then will take its fi rst conference road trip of the year at Oral Roberts and Centenary. The Thunderbirds will be looking to log their fi rst victory of the season when the week commences after starting the season 0-6. Southern Utah began the year with an active roster of only nine athletes, but have since seen the return of Caitlin Sears over the past two games. Challis Pascucci has been the leader of the team during the opening stretch, pacing the team with highs of 8.8 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. She is followed closely by another post player, freshman Chanel Thorley, with 8.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Southern Utah has struggled to fi nd its groove on the offensive side of the ball as the team is shooting 30 percent from the fi eld on 91 of 303 shooting, including a 24.7 percent clip (22-89) from long range. The output has left the Thunderbirds averaging 45.7 points per game as the opposition has scored 68.0 points per game on 41.2 percent shooting. SUU will have its fi rst opportunity this week to break out of its recent funk when the ball is tipped at 7:00 p.m. against the Ohio Bobcats on Tuesday night. The T-Birds will then face Oral Roberts on Saturday at 2:05 p.m. (CT) and the Centenary Ladies at 7:00 p.m. (CT) on Monday night. HEAD COACH JR PAYNE JR Payne became the ninth women s basketball head coach at Southern Utah University, taking the reins of the program on April 20, 2009. Payne comes to the Thunderbirds after previous stops at Santa Clara, Boise State and Gonzaga. Payne was the top assistant at Santa Clara University during the 2008-09 season, under fi rst-year head coach Jennifer Mountain. Payne was instrumental in recruiting the top junior college player in the state of California to play for the Broncos as Lena Gipson led the team in scoring and rebounding. Prior to Santa Clara, Payne served as an assistant coach for Boise State University. During her time in Boise, the Broncos enjoyed a wealth of success, winning conference titles two of the three years and advancing to the NCAA postseason. BSU posted back-toback 24-8 seasons, including a perfect 14-0 mark at home during the 2007-08 season. Payne began her career at Gonzaga University, serving as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator under head coach Kelly Graves. Payne was an integral part of the Bulldogs turn around as the team posted a fi ve-win season during the staff s fi rst year to a 28-win season during the 2004-05 season, including an undefeated run in the West Coast Conference. Payne was a part of the process that brought Gonzaga s fi rst All-American to campus in guard Shannon Mathews. Payne was a four-year letter winner at St. Mary s College (Calif.), helping the Gaels to their fi rst every appearance in the NCAA tournament during the 1998-99 season. She was a fi rst-team all-west Coast Conference selection in addition to two fi rst-team all- West Coast Conference tournament honors as a point guard. I m thrilled to join the Thunderbird family and this community, Payne said. It was the people here in Cedar City that really sold me on the program and I knew that this was where I wanted to be. I expect our team to be a blue collar team and work hard both on and off the court. LAST TIME OUT BOZEMAN, Mont. - Nov. 28 - Southern Utah recorded more points (36-31) and a better shooting percentage (50.0-47.8) during the fi nal 20 minutes of the game, but the Thunderbirds were unable to come away with a victory as SUU suffered a 68-54 loss to the Utah Valley Wolverines in the consolation game of the Bobcat Basketball Classic on Saturday night. The T-Birds drop to 0-6 with the loss, while UVU move to 3-5 with the victory. SCOUTING OHIO The Ohio Bobcats will enter the game on Tuesday with a 2-2 record, including a recent twogame winning streak after victories over George Washington (70-58) and Marshall (63-48). Ohio is led in scoring and rebounding by Jennifer Bushby who is averaging 11.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. She is joined in double-digit scoring numbers by Da Keisha Mann who is turning in 11.3 points per game. Semeka Randall is in her second year as head coach of the Ohio program, compiling an overall record of 15-20 during her tenure. The game on Tuesday will be the fi rst meeting between the two teams on the hardwood. SCOUTING ORAL ROBERTS Oral Roberts has begun the year with a 3-1 record after notching victories over Texas-Pan American (98-65), LaSalle (76-55) and Houston Baptist (107-67). Oral Roberts holds the all-time series lead with a 15-10 advantage, including a three-game winning streak over the last few games. SCOUTING CENTENARY The Centenary Ladies have opened the 2009-10 season winless with an 0-6 mark and will host Northwestern State and before welcoming the Thunderbirds to the Gold Dome on Monday, Dec. 7.
