California Baptist University Cheer Additional Tryout Information WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO TRY OUT? - High school seniors with provisional admission into the University - Undergraduate or graduate transfer students with provisional admission into the University - Full time undergraduate or graduate CBU students in good academic standing with the University MISCELLANEOUS TRYOUT INFORMATION - Potential team members are not only evaluated on current skill level and ability, but more importantly how much POTENTIAL athletes have to become collegiate cheerleaders and contribute to the cheerleading program. - There is NOT a point system for CBU Cheer tryouts. The coaching staff makes the final team selection. - Each cheer team candidate will be notified in person or via social media and/or email as to the tryout results shortly after the actual tryout process. The allocation of scholarships may not be fully determined until after tryout results are given, and those decisions are made by the coaching staff. - All clinic and tryout sessions are closed to friends, family and other spectators. - If needed, potential cheerleaders must provide personal medical supplies such as pre-wrap, athletic tape, Band- Aid s, and pain medication. These items will not be provided by the CBU Coaching Staff or University. - Housing will not be provided to potential cheer team members. - CBU Cheer has 2 cheer teams within the program a game team and a competition team. A spot on a specific team will not be determined at tryouts. If selected for the CBU cheer program, specific team placement will take place at the end of summer. ADVANTAGES TO TRYING OUT IN PERSON - Trying out in person will show that you are committed to attending California Baptist University. - Potential cheer team members will be able to work and tryout with current CBU cheerleaders who are some of the most talented stunters in the nation. - Cheer team candidates will have the chance to meet and interact with the CBU coaching staff and current CBU cheer team members. TIPS TO PREPARING FOR CBU CHEER TRYOUTS - The CBU coaching staff is looking for well-rounded individuals with outstanding skills to be a part of our program. Good character, the ability to get along well with others, and an outgoing personality, are very important. Along with those qualities, coaches are looking for individuals who are easy to work with, take constructive criticism and listen to advice to make improvements to their skills. - It may be in the best interest of potential cheer team members to send in preliminary videos of skills so that the CBU Coaching Staff can provide feedback on the direction candidates should take, what areas to work on, and improvements that need to be made specifically before actual tryouts. These videos will not be judged as tryout videos. Please be sure to label any and all preliminary videos as such. - Grades and how well you have worked with coaches and teammates from prior squads, and the way individuals interact with current CBU Cheerleaders and alumni will be considered. - Motions, tumbling and stunting are also very important. If you do not have the experience to perform all required skills prior to tryouts, it is very important to get in touch with local gyms, college teams, or any of the CBU Cheerleaders to join classes or request private lessons to reach those requirements. - CBU does not have height or weight requirements for the cheerleaders, but all squad members are expected to stay physically fit and in shape throughout the year. - We recommend candidates attend CBU recruit clinics and workshops throughout the year. Each potential squad member will gain an inside perspective of the CBU Cheer Program. It will also give participants the opportunity to experience the coaching style at CBU, and the chance to work with and learn from all current members of the teams.

CALIFORNIA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY SPORTS MEDICINE Sickle Cell Trait Testing Waiver Form About Sickle Cell Trait: - Sickle cell trait is an inherited condition of the oxygen-carrying protein, hemoglobin, in the red blood cells. - Sickle cell trait is a common condition (affects approximately 3 Million Americans). - Although Sickle cell trait is most predominant in African-Americans and those of Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Indian, Caribbean, and South and Central American ancestry, persons of all races and ancestry may test positive for sickle cell trait. - Sickle cell trait is not a disease but a life-long condition that will not change over time. - Sickle cell trait is usually benign, but during intense, sustained exercise, hypoxia (lack of oxygen) in the muscles may cause sickling of red blood cells (red blood cells changing from a normal disc shape to a crescent or sickle shape), which can accumulate in the bloodstream and logjam blood vessels, leading to collapse from the rapid breakdown of muscles starved of blood. Sickle Cell Trait Testing: - The NCAA mandates that all NCAA student-athletes have knowledge of their sickle cell trait status before the student-athlete participates in any intercollegiate athletics event, including strength and conditioning sessions, practices, competitions, etc. The term student-athlete includes new and continuing student athletes as well as students trying out for a team. - The California Baptist University Athletic Department offers sickle cell trait screening in the form of a blood test to all student-athletes as part of the pre-participation physical examination process. - Testing will be conducted at the California Baptist University Health Center and/or other designated laboratory facility and results will be reported to a California Baptist University Team Physician. SICKLE CELL TRAIT TESTING WAIVER I,(athlete name), understand and acknowledge that the NCAA and the California Baptist University Athletics Department mandates that all student-athletes have knowledge of their sickle cell trait status. I understand that knowledge about sickle cell trait enables a student-athlete and their coach to manage the implications of having it which is why the NCAA requirement is for my benefit. Additionally, I have read and fully understand the aforementioned facts about sickle cell trait and sickle cell trait testing. Recognizing that my true physical condition is dependent upon an accurate medical history and a full disclosure of any symptoms, complaints, prior injuries, ailments, and/or disabilities experienced, I hereby affirm that I have fully disclosed in writing any prior medical history and/or knowledge of sickle cell trait status to California Baptist University medical personnel. I understand and accept the possibility that I may have sickle cell trait, but DECLINE sickle cell trait testing as part of my pre- participation physical examination and to the fullest extent allowed by law, I voluntarily agree to the fullest extent allowed by law to release, discharge, indemnify and hold harmless, California Baptist University, its officers, employees and agents from any and all costs, liabilities, expenses, claims, demands, or causes of action on account of any loss or personal injury that mig ht result from my non-compliance with the mandate of the NCAA and the California Baptist University Athletics Department. Additionally, I understand that were I to consent to be tested, the results would not affect my status as a student-athlete or position on team. I have read and signed this document with full knowledge of its significance. I further state that I am at least 18 years of age and competent to sign this waiver.
