The Blinker Volume 66 No. 6 www.ycsh.org July 27, 2017 Commodore s Corner Hello Fellow Members, We are well into July and I hope you are all having an enjoyable time at the many events and activities at the Club. Congrats to Garrett and Justin Roach who won the 420 division and Amanda Foster who took first place in Sunfish. Thanks to the many volunteers and YAP staff who helped make the Regatta a successful one. Blinker Deadlines Wednesday for Articles Issue Dates August 9 August 17 September 27 October 5 November 1 November 9 The deadline for each issue is at 5 pm. Please send your copy to blinker@ycsh.org. Ron Workman, Blinker Editor Hello YCSH members, Miner s Gems Mid-summer madness is happening now at the club as we are in the thick of the summer and our full calendar. The weather has certainly cooperated in the last few weeks, hopefully making your trips to the beach and boat more enjoyable. We have had one weather related issue, on Thursday July 13th we had a wind and thunder storm blow through that left a path of destruction. Our second-floor large awning, railings, deck and roof were significantly damaged. The upper deck will be closed for a couple weeks until we can make it safe for everyone. Our Tuesday on the deck menu will now take place on the first-floor deck and main bar. Stayed tuned for more details about the second-floor repairs. As I consider the recent past, I want to thank all the members, the Board Members, the Flag Officers and our amazing staff for putting in so much time and effort these past few weeks. There have been many events this past month, most scheduled, and some not scheduled, and all of them have been remarkable success stories due to so many people working hard and working together. We have it really good here at the YCSH! Looking forward, we have a lot more on the horizon to keep these same people busy. We have the Marlin Tournament registration and wing night on Thursday July 27th, we have the YCSH house tour on Friday the 28th, along with Diller boat rides. We have not scheduled any big events for Saturday July 29th, so use this night to bring the entire family or your house guests and friends in for a nice quiet dinner. It will be our last quiet Saturday dinner until September, so use it wisely. The Marlin Tournament awards banquet is Sunday July 30th. We will be serving member dinners in the grille room. Please keep in your mind and remind all guests you bring that the YCSH has a dress code for our dining room and bar. Please check with the front office, a flag officer or a manager on duty for the details and the time it goes in affect. Still looking forward to work every day (almost) See you at the club Peter Miner, General Manager

Proceeds will benefit the Diller Home for the blind. In Tim McGrath's Give Me a Fast Ship, early American naval literature has found a proud new flagship. It is rare for a onevolume work to fill the sails of personalities and battles separated from the modern reader by nearly two centuries, but Give Me a Fast Ship pulls it off beautifully. His descriptions are vivid, his commanders three-dimensional, and he evinces a genuine love of the world of white sails and black powder. When Give Me a Fast Ship drops anchor, the reader returns from an adventure cruise with respect for the men who fought the Revolution at sea. The Wall Street Journal.

This past week end of July 15 saw a total of seventeen boats sailing in the Great Sound. The competition has been tough and with ideal winds it has been very successful. Our interest in sailing has definetly picked up with many new members joining the sailing program. We

We had good wind although shifty at times. We welcomed and hosted 90 boats and 101 sailors to our club from the nine participating MAYRA clubs. Thanks to the skillful work of our

race committee, we were able to complete 5 races for each fleet. We are especially proud of the seven YCSH sailors who represented our club, many of whom who had not participated in a regatta. We thank them for doing their best and encourage them to continue sailing. A special thank you to the Race Committee, staff and all of our volunteers! Please R.S.V.P. to jmerrill@ycsh.org if you plan on attending, so we can make sure we have enough interest in the event. THE HISTORY OF WING NIGHT Wing Night has morphed from a brief Ladies Night on Thursdays evenings at the club. The late Bill Coyle was a regular at Ladies Night waiting for Nancy to join him at the club. When he was not in attendance, the Ladies put his baseball card and votive candle at his regular seat. They voted him their mascot. In 2005, when Roy Williams was Commodore, a group of Ladies approached him about changing the night to Wing Night which was so successful in other restaurants in the area. Those women were Joy Williams, Janis Kelly, Roe Hufner, Cyd McGrath, Nancy Carson and Anne Stulpin. In 2012, Commodore Gene Mopsik changed it to Nosh Night, but it went back to Wing Night the following year. It is a constant, fun, busy night and a wonderful way to start summer weekends. At YCSH Thursdays have become the new Friday.
