The Panthers opened the second half with a 12-4 run as they won their first road game of the season 90-74 in Chicago. EIU is now 5-3 on the season and will play the second of four straight road games on Wednesday at Northern Kentucky. NKU is 5-3 on the year with a 1-1 record at home. The Norse have won two straight with road wins at Morehead State and Norfolk State. ATTACKING THE GLASS AT UIC After being outrebounded by a 53-30 margin in their loss to Bradley, Eastern Illinois attacked the glass against UIC finishing with a 46-37 rebound advantage. The Panthers had two players finish with double figure rebounds for the first time since Feb. 6, 2015 against Southeast Missouri. On Sunday EIU was led by Aboubacar Diallo with a career high 14 rebounds including four on the offensive glass. Patrick Muldoon also posted a career high with ten rebounds pulling down three offensive boards. It was the second time this season that EIU has finished with a positive rebound margin in a game. JOHNSTON JUST MISSES DOUBLE-DOUBLE Cornell Johnston fell one assist shy of posting his fourth career double-double as he posted a season high 21 points and nine assists in Sunday s win at UIC. Johnston was 7-of-12 from the floor and 4-of-6 from 3-point range. The junior passed out nine assists with only two turnovers. He currently ranks 15th in the NCAA in assist-to-turnover ratio and his 5.5 assists per game are third in the OVC. Johnston ranks second on the EIU career assists list with 371 assists. He is ninth on the EIU career 3-pointers made list with 138. This season he is eighth in the OVC in 3-pointers made. Spoonhour was previously the head coach at Moberly Area Community College where he coached for three seasons. He was a long time assistant coach at the NCAA Division I level and served as the interim head coach at UNLV to complete the 2004 season posting a 6-4 record and taking the team to the finals of the Mountain West Conference Tournament along with an NIT appearance. In 2001 Spoonhour was named the National Junior College Coach of the Year leading Wabash Valley College to the NJCAA National Championship with a 36-1 record. He is the son of the late legendary coach Charlie Spoonhour. Spoonhour played basketball at Pittsburg State earning his degree in 1994. He was an honorable mention All-Conference selection. He has assistant coaching stops at Central Missouri, Saint Louis, UNLV, Missouri and Texas San Antonio. Spoonhour s career mark is 164-107; 64-79 at the NCAA Division I level. His EIU record is 58-75 with an OVC mark of 31-33. Spoonhour led the program to its first NCAA Division I postseason win on March 17, 2015 with a 97-91 win at Oakland in the CIT. LAST TIME OUT Eastern Illinois closed the first half on a 13-4 run and opened the second half with a 12-3 run as the Panthers won their first road contest of the year with a 90-76 win at UIC. Cornell Johnston led all players with 21 points scoring five straight points late in the second half after UIC had cut the Panthers lead to ten points. Montell Goodwin scored 19 points, all in the second half, as he hit back-to-back 3-pointers to snap a 1-for-22 shooting performance over the last two games. EIU dominated on the glass with Aboubacar Diallo (14) and Patrick Muldoon (10) both pulling down double figure rebounds. SCOUTING NORTHERN KENTUCKY John Brannen is in his second season as the head coach at Northern Kentucky. The Norse are 5-3 on the season with a pair of games against OVC members already this season. NKU lost to Austin Peay at the Miami (Ohio) Tournament and beat Morehead State at the end of November. Drew McDonald is the team s leading scorer at 20.5 points per game which ranks 50th in the NCAA. McDonald leads the team in rebounding at 8.6 per game. Lavone Holland is second on the team in scoring at 14.5 points per game and leads the team in assists with 34. SERIES INFORMATION This will be the sixth meeting between Eastern Illinois and Northern Kentucky. The Panthers hold a 3-2 all-time series lead after winning 79-73 in overtime last December in Lantz Arena. Cornell Johnston had 24 points and Trae Anderson posted a double-double with 19 points, 12 rebounds in the win. Goodwin was 4-of-8 in the second half including 4-of-5 from 3-point range with back-to-back 3 s during the Panthers 12-3 run to open the half. Prior to the second half at UIC, Goodwin had hit 1-of-22 from the floor over a game and a half time frame. He is currently 13th in the league in scoring at 13.9 points per game. Casey Teson scored in double figures for the second time this season finishing with 12 points at UIC. Teson s season high was 17 points at Troy. He was 2-of-3 from 3-point range at UIC and has hit 6 of his last 11 3-pointers. For the season Teson has four games with multiple 3-pointers made. Teson added four free throws as he is 8-of-8 this year and has made 14 straight dating back to last season. Ray Crossland continues to be a spark off the bench for the Panthers as he scored in double figures for the fifth straight game with 11 points at UIC. For the season Crossland ranks second in the OVC in scoring average off the bench behind only Tre Harris (13.3 ppg) of SIU Edwardsville. Crossland has added intensity on the glass averaging 5.6 rebounds per game and on defense where his 20 steals rank 16th in the NCAA in total steals. He has at least one steal in six straight games with a high of six. Eastern Illinois held UIC to 39 percent shooting from the floor on Sunday as the Panthers have now held three teams below 40 percent for the season. EIU currently ranks fourth in the OVC in field goal percentage defense allowing opponents to shoot 42.9 percent. The Panthers are second in the OVC in scoring defense allowing 67.6 points per game. Eastern Illinois was solid at the free throw line on Sunday finishing the game 18-of-20 for a season best 90 percent. It was the fourth time this season that EIU has shot 77 percent or better at the stripe. The previous season high at the free throw line was a 17-of-19 night at Troy good for 89.5 percent. Muusa Dama swatted away three shots at UIC as the junior college transfer has at least one block in every game this season. Dama leads the OVC with 20 blocks and has multiple blocks in five games. Dama was hampered by foul trouble at UIC and pulled down a season low five rebounds. He ranks second in the OVC at 9.9 rebounds per game. Joe Kuligoski came off the bench for his best game of the season at UIC. The Chicago area native scored a season high eight points going 3-of-4 from the floor in 17 minutes. Kuligoski added one rebound and one block during his time on the floor. Eastern Illinois continues to rank as the one the nation s top teams in terms of forcing turnovers. The Panthers rank fourth in the nation in turnovers forced with opponents coughing the ball up an average of 19.25 times per game. West Virginia, Fordham and Oklahoma State are the top three teams in the nation in forcing turnovers.
