UP AHEAD: The RedHawks host Buffalo in what will be the second and final regular season meeting of the year between the two teams. Tip is set for 1 p.m. The game can be seen live on ESPN3, or fans can listen on the Miami IMG Sports Network with a subscription. The game will be part one of a One Miami Day doubleheader that concludes with the men s basketball team taking on Akron at 3:30 p.m. Additionally, there will be a few opportunities for family fun with Carnival on the Concourse and a free youth clinic taking place. 2. DICKERSON LEADING THE WAY: She may only be 5-3, but freshman point guard Lauren Dickerson is leading Miami in nearly every major statistical category. She is the RedHawks leader in scoring (14.1 ppg), assists (3.9 apg), minutes played (29.9 mpg) and steals (1.9 spg). The Indianapolis, Ind., native has scored in doubles figures in 11 of the last 13 games, and 13 of 17 contests overall. She also boasts four outings with 20 or more points, including a career-high 30 points at Wright State on Dec. 21. Her 30-point performance marked the program s first since Courtney Osborn dropped 39 points on Ohio in March of 2013. Dickerson is currently the top-scoring freshman in the conference. 3. BLOCK PARTY: The RedHawks rejected a season-high nine shot attempts on Wednesday against Eastern Michigan, helping them become the top shot-blocking team in conference play through four games. Freshman forward Savannah Kluesner led the effort with five blocks, the most rejections since Kristen Levering also recorded five back on Jan. 6, 2016 against NIU. As a team, it is the most since last year s first round MAC Tournament game against Akron when they recorded 10 blocks. MIAMI UNIVERSITY, PLEASE When referring to Miami, please use Miami University, Miami University (Ohio) or Miami (Ohio). Please do not use Miami of Ohio, University of Miami of Ohio, etc. The latter are not the proper names for our institution. Also, in 1997, the University began using its new nickname, the RedHawks. It is one word with a capital H.

Savannah Kluesner contributed a career-best 13 points while Lauren Dickerson and Kayla Brown each chipped in 11 points. The RedHawks and Eagles opened the contest in a back-and-forth battle. Heading into the first media timeout with 4:56 to play in the opening quarter, the score stood at 10-8 in favor of EMU. Triples by Leah Purvis and McCoy, as well as an Abbey Hoff layin, comprised Miami s early scoring. The Eagles started to take control over the quarter s final few minutes and they owned a 23-17 edge through 10 minutes of action. Miami came out hot in the second quarter by sinking its first two shots - a Dickerson layup and a McCoy three-pointer. The Eagles answered with a couple baskets of their own but back-to-back makes from beyond the arc by Purvis and Kristen Levering gave the RedHawks the lead at 28-27 with 5:38 remaining in the half. EMU closed out the half with three free throws and a jumper while Miami matched their output with a Kluesner triple and another basket from McCoy. The RedHawks jumped on EMU early in the second half, scoring the first 10 points of the third quarter. At the media timeout just over five minutes in, MU owned a 43-32 lead. The Eagles battled back out of the break but the RedHawks kept pace with points from Kluesner, Levering and Hoff. Through 30 minutes of play, Miami carried a 55-43 lead. Eastern Michigan narrowed the gap in the early moments of the fourth and final frame, opening on a 12-2 run. With 5:21 left, the MU lead stood at 57-55. That was as close as it would get as the RedHawks answered by finishing the game on a 15-6 run, which was powered by baskets from Kluesner, Brown and Dickerson, all of whom also hit clutch free throws down the stretch. ABOUT BUFFALO: Following a program-best start of 10-0, the Bulls are just 1-4 in their last five games. The lone win came against the RedHawks back on New Year s Eve in Buffalo. UB enters Saturday s matchup having lost its last three games contests against Ohio, Central Michigan and Toledo. Senior guard JoAnna Smith continues to lead the charge offensively, scoring 13.7 points per game. Juniors Cassie Oursler and Stephanie Reid nearly average doubles figures with 9.5 ppg and 9.1 ppg, respectively. In MAC play, the Bulls are scoring at a clip of 65.2 points per game while they surrender 72.2 points per contest. The defending MAC Tournament Champions were picked to finish second in the MAC East in the preseason coaches poll. SERIES WITH THE BULLS: Miami and Buffalo have met 35 times previously with the Red & White leading the all-time series, 20-15. The RedHawks most recent win at home in the series was just last season, a 69-58 triumph on Jan. 23, 2016. UP AHEAD FOR THE REDHAWKS: The RedHawks hit the highway for their first extended conference road trip of the season. On Wednesday, Miami will battle Central Michigan at 7 p.m. Following that contest, MU will stay on the road and head right to Northern Illinois for a 2 p.m. ET tip on Saturday. The trip will prove to be a good test for the Hawks as both CMU and NIU lead the MAC West with 4-0 starts to the conference season. LOOKING FOR SECONDARY SCORING: One thing the RedHawks have been lacking a good chunk of this season is a regular contributor to provide some secondary scoring. Lauren Dickerson s 14.1 ppg leads the team and she is followed by Leah Purvis (6.8 ppg), Kayla Brown (6.7 ppg) and Kendall McCoy (5.6 ppg). Conference play has seen Purvis (8.5 ppg), Brown (7.0 ppg) and McCoy (8.8) each take a step up in providing a boost offensively. The RedHawks had more than two players score in double figures for the first time all season on Wednesday against Eastern Michigan McCoy (14), Savannah Kluesner (13), Dickerson (11) and Brown (11). GET TO THE LINE: The RedHawks rank fourth in the MAC in free throw percentage (.707) but they are second to last last in total attempts (259) despite playing one more game than the next closest team in the conference. Miami has attempted nine or fewer free throws in five games this season, including a seasonlow three at Wright State (Dec. 21). A concerted effort to get to the charity stripe could prove to be a big boost for a team in need of an offensive lift. IMPROVED DEFENSE: Through 17 games last season, the RedHawks allowed an average of 68.3 points per game, a departure from this year s team who has found a way to improve on that mark. Through the same number of games this season, MU is surrendering just 62.8 points per contest. It is the lowest points allowed per game at this point in the season under head coach Cleve Wright, and the best since the 2012-13 team allowed just 58.0 points per game. Of note, the RedHawks have allowed 70.2 ppg in its first four MAC contests, including a season-high 85 points against Western Michigan (Jan. 4). 4 2 0 16-17 WOMEN S B A S K E T B A L L WHAT RETURNS: With nine returning letterwinners and four returning starters, Miami has a large majority of its statistical contributions back from last season. The RedHawks return 84.0 percent of their scoring, 81.3 percent of their rebounding, 81.9 percent of their assists, 88.3 percent of their steals and 76.3 percent of their blocks from last year s squad. Their top returning scorer is junior guard Baleigh Reid, who averaged 15.3 points per game. However, she is still recovering from a season-ending knee injury suffered in late February and is out indefinitely. The top returning active scorer is sophomore guard Leah Purvis. She started all 30 games and averaged 10.7 points per contest as a freshman. PURVIS SELECTED TO TEAM USA FOR WORLD MACCABIAH GAMES: Maccabi USA recently announced its team that will represent the United States in open women s basketball championship at the World Maccabiah Games in Israel next July. Miami sophomore guard Leah Purvis will be a part of this 12-person team. Purvis is believed to be the first RedHawk to represent Team USA in women s basketball. The last Miami student-athlete to participate in the World Maccabiah Games was track and field sprinter Margarita Pogorelov, who represented Israel in 2009 and took home a bronze medal in the 5,000 meters. The Maccabiah Games are the world s third largest international sporting event and attracts elite Jewish athletes from around the world. The Maccabiah Games in 2017 will take place from July 4-18 and will be comprised of 9000 athletes from 80 countries. The Games provide Jewish athletes the opportunity to come to Israel and compete at an elite level while also building connections with their teammates, competitors and the people of Israel. 2 0 16-17 WOMEN S B A S K E T B A L L 7 Cleve Wright returns for his fourth season in charge of the Miami women s basketball program. Wright came to the RedHawks after a very successful 11-year run at Gannon that featured five NCAA Tournament appearances and two runs to the Elite Eight. Wright holds a career coaching record of 264-176. His young Miami team last year saw 94 percent of all its available minutes played by freshman and sophomores. Despite that the RedHawks were 6-5 in non-conference play. Injuries and inexperience caught up with the team in MAC play as it finished 9-21, but now with several veterans, combined with a powerful recruiting class joining them, Wright has the RedHawks ready to take the next step this season. Wright won 70 percent of his games at Gannon (233-100), turning the Lady Knights into a Division II powerhouse. In his final season there in 2013, he led Gannon to a 31-5 record and an appearance in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. The team finished the season ranked sixth in the country. Wright brought the Lady Knights to the NCAA Tournament in five of the his last seven seasons, with his best year coming in 2009-10 when he was named the NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year after guiding them to a 37-1 record and an NCAA Final Four appearance. He coached seven All-Americans and 37 all-conference selections. Cleve Wright Head Coach Years as Head Coach: 15th Season Overall Record: 264-176 Years at Miami: Fourth Season Record at Miami: 31-76 Alma Mater: Berea 89 Gannon s women s basketball program was extremely successful in the classroom as well under Wright. The Lady Knights were ranked among the top 25 teams in GPA in eight of his final nine years. In addition, 70 players earned allconference academic honors. Wright joined Gannon after a three-year stint (1999-2002) as the top assistant at Northwestern under head coach June Olkowski. While with the Wildcats, he was responsible for the development of the post players and was the team s recruiting coordinator. His recruiting class in 2001 was rated as the 35th-best in the entire nation by All Star Girls Report, and he was voted as one of the top 25 assistant coaches in Division I in 2002. Prior to his time at Northwestern, Wright spent two seasons as an assistant coach with Olkowski at Butler. He also spent four seasons (1993-97) as the head coach at Southwestern High School in Somerset, Ky., and was an assistant coach at Duke during the 1992-93 season. Wright earned his bachelor s degree from Berea College (Kentucky) in 1989. He competed on both the men s basketball and track teams, while serving as a student assistant coach for the women s team. He earned a master s degree in athletic administration from Ball State in 1992, working as a graduate assistant coach there for two seasons (1990-92).
