a script from Bible Stories for Kids: Jesus and Peter Walk on Water by Rebecca Wimmer What Who When Wear (Props) Peter and another disciple are terrified when they see someone walking on the water towards their boat. Peter wants to walk on water, too, but begins to sink when he takes his eyes off Jesus. Themes: Children s Ministry, Bible stories, Faith Peter Disciple Jesus Bible times Boat made out of cardboard box, or whatever creative thing you can think of. Actors can either wear Bible costumes or go simple and wear modern clothes but coordinate with jeans and solid colored t-shirts. Why Matthew 14:22-33 How Time This is a light and fun script that requires a lot of energy. Give yourself plenty of time to practice the comic timing. Approximately 4 minutes 2018 Skit Guys, Inc. Peter and Disciple are on a boat and rocking back and forth. It s storming a bit, the wind is blowing, the mist (smoke machine) billows a bit. I don t really like storms. Why didn t we check the weather forecast before getting on this boat?! Disciple: What s a weather forecast? Ugh I think I m gonna be sick. Disciple ducks below out of sight. Not on the deck I just cleaned that (sick noises from Disciple) yesterday. Disciple pops up looking a little better. Enter Jesus in the back mostly out of sight. Over the next lines he slowly moves toward the boat/stage. Really? All this water? You couldn t just lean over and (suddenly alarmed and pointing) Ahhhh! What s that?! Peter ducks out of sight, only hands and face just above the eyes visible. Disciple: (spotting Jesus and also alarmed) I don t know but it s walking this way! Disciple ducks out of sight, only hands and face just above the eyes visible. (popping up) Walking this way?! How can it be walking this way?! WERMARK There s nothing but water as far as the eye can see! How can something be walking this way?!!!! Peter ducks again. Disciple: (popping up) Not something! Someone! (popping up) Someone?! Disciple: (popping up) Yes! (up) Who?! 2

Disciple: (up) It s a ghost!!! (up) A what?! Disciple: (up) A ghost!!! (up) A ghost?! Disciple: (up) Yes, a ghost!!! (up) Ahh!!! (up) Ahh!!! WERMARK (up) Ahh!!! (up) Ahh!!! (And then catching a better look) Wait a second. That s not a ghost! Disciple: (up) It s not? (squinting to see clearly through the mist) It s it s it s Jesus! 3

They both are standing, seem to calm a bit then look at each other and Both: AHHHHHHHH!!!!!! They duck completely out of sight. (still out of sight) What am I doing? It s Jesus! There s nothing to be afraid of! (Standing exuberantly, he starts waving his hands around) Jesus! Jesus!! It s me! Peter! We re over here! Can you see us?! Of course I can see you, Pete. You re standing right in front of me. Disciple: (completely dumbfounded) Are you walking on water? Yup. Disciple: That s impossible! It s not impossible because, well I m doing it right now. (completely stoked) I wanna do it too. Disciple: What?! Jesus. I believe in the power of God. I can have faith like that. The kind of faith that lets me walk on water! I wanna walk on the water with you. (demure) Peter (and then pumping him up) let s do this thing!!! WERMARK Disciple: What?! Sweet! (Figuring it out this is all new) Ok, so I should just (starts leaning over the boat a bit and then retreating) Ok wait, if I just (starts to swing a leg over then retreats) or maybe if I tried to (turns around and tries to somehow back out akwardly) no that s not going to Peter. (Holding out his hand) Come. Peter climbs out but he stands. (triumphantly marching around a bit) I m walking on water! Disciple: (triumphantly) You re walking on water! (celebrating) You re walking on water! (a bit less sure of it, slower more hesitant walking) I m walking on water. Disciple: (a bit less sure of it) You re walking on water. 4

(a bit more matter of fact) You re walking on water. (suddenly stopping, shaking, doubting) I m walking on water?! Disciple: (noticing he s losing it) You re walking on water? (matter of fact) Actually, you re sinking. Ahhhhh!!!! Jesus save me! Aw, Pete (reaches out and grabs his hand and steadies him) You of little faith. Why did you doubt? Jesus and Disciple help Peter into the boat and Jesus climbs in too At least I stopped believing you were a ghost. Disciple: (thinking Peter said he saw another ghost) A ghost?! Disciple and Peter look at each other. Peter & Disciple: Ahhhh!!!!! Peter and Disciple duck out of sight. Jesus rolls his eyes. EXIT in boat. WERMARK 5
