Bensted was introduced to the sport by his uncle at the age of six and 㻁 rst represented his country when he was 15. He won his 㻁 rst of 㻁 ve straight junior national titles in 2010 and claimed his 㻁 rst senior national title in 2012. The -73kg 㻁 ghter won his 㻁 rst Oceania title in 2013, 㻁 nished second in 2014 before being selected for his Commonwealth Games debut later that year. Bensted made the semi- 㻁 nals before going down in a close 㻁 ght with eventual gold medallist Danny Williams of England. He bounced back to 㻁 nish with the bronze medal following a win over Scotland s Patrick Dawson. Needing to win both the 2015 and 2016 Oceania Championships to give himself a shot at automatic quali 㻁 cation for Rio, Bensted did just that. Having won the 2015 title he headed to the World Championships where he went down in his opening bout to eventual silver medallist Riki Nakaya of Japan. He started the Olympic year with a 㻁 fth place 㻁 nish in Tunisia and a seventh in Peru before going on to all but seal his debut Olympic appearance with a win over Gaston Lafon from French Polynesia in the 㻁 nal of the 2016 Oceania Championships.
