The Vimy Award Established in 1991, the Vimy Award recognizes Canadians who have made outstanding commitments to Canadian security and defence and towards preserving our democratic values, normally as a life-long achievement. The 2018 Vimy Gala Honoring Canadian Military History The First World War was a defining event in Canada s history. It was by any measure a traumatic experience that left few areas of national life untouched. Overseas, particularly in France and Flanders, but also in other theatres throughout the world, Canadians on the sea, on the ground and in the air contributed substantially to the war effort but paid dearly for their involvement. In the end, the war claimed the lives of some 61,000 Canadian men and women and left more than 172,000 wounded in body and mind. The CDA Institute wishes to remember and honour the Canadian sacrifice on the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice that ended the Great War at the 2018 Vimy Award Gala.
