COMBINED DRIVING Awards! from Judy Cates and Merridy Hance Your horse is special, and she thinks she deserves special recognition! Besides mints and hugs, there are many rewards for which you and your horse may qualify right here in our neck of the woods. In our March Mouthpiece, we talked about the national awards programs of the ADS* and USEF*. Those are great, but there's much more. Here at home, EMHC* and EI* have an array of rewards, both at events and in year-ends. Look for Evergreen at local and regional breed shows, which have the Champion of Champions for the winners of each halter class -- stallions, mares and geldings of the AMHR* under and over, Foundation, Classic, Modern, Modern Pleasure, ASPR* and NSSPR*. Evergreen will also have the Triple A Amateur program from ASPC*/AMHR registry, and there will be classes for Western Stock type Horse Halter with special awards -- this is a non-rated class that hopefully will be sanctioned classes for next year. Each breed show will have the Champion of Champions for the winners of each halter class - stallions, mares and geldings of the AMHR under and over, Foundation, Classic, Modern, Modern Pleasure, ASPR and NSSPR. At its year-end banquet, high-point awards for members are given in all categories including Carriage for both under and over AMHR and Classic ponies. Since there are classes for ASPR though NR*, if any participate, there most likely will be an award for this category too. The categories include Halter, Performance, Carriage and Amateur in the AMHR under and over, Foundation, Classic, Modern, Modern Pleasure and ASPR. This year, EMHC will include classes for NSSPR so there will be a high-point for this category too. Our partners at Equestrians Institute Driving Division have an interesting awards program, too. First off, EI members take advantage of discounts in entry fees, so that's an award everybody can enjoy. May 2017ay 2014 Page 3
Jet and Anna Johnson win the ASPC Small Pony award at the EI CDE in 2016 At the big CDE in August, besides all the many division awards, special awards are given for best performances among registered breeds, including AMHR and ASPC as well as Friesian, Haflinger, Fjord, Warmblood, Morgan, plus awards for non-registered horses and ponies. Write-ups and photos go to the various registries for inclusion in their breed magazines. Like EMHC, EI has a year-end awards luncheon where members receive their "Best-Of" awards in two programs: EI gives perpetual trophies and huge ribbons for best-scoring VSE, horse, pony, multiples in a range of regional driving events (qualifying events are listed on the EI website). In a second program specific to Combined Driving, EI gives awards for top scoring levels (Training, Preliminary, Intermediate, and Advanced), regardless of equine size, in regional qualifying CDEs. Look for our small equines always to be among the winners. So go ahead... put that special award on your mantel or on your horse's stall door. He's earned it!
