Parts and Service Memo 4233, 4240, 4250, 5260 Horizontal Shaft Impactors PSM 014 1102 FT C&S HSI SUBJECT: Horizontal Shaft Impactors. Rotor Wedge Update KPI-JCI has made a change to their rotor wedge assembly on horizontal shaft impactors. The update includes new wedges and wedge bolts to hold the blowbars in place. The new wedge assembly reduces the amount of time and parts required to install new blowbars. When converting to the new rotor wedge assembly, ALL wedges must be updated at the same time. February 3, 2011 rev. 3 December 21, 2012 Impactor hood fasteners The following tools/equipment are required to complete the blowbar wedge assembly procedure: 5/8 Socket Torque wrench up to 200 ft.lbs. Loctite Silver Grade Anti-Seize or equivalent Blowbar lifting tool Wedge Assembly Kit 318049-4233/4240 313567-4250 313568-52 Series 3 bar 313569-52 Series 4 bar 2. Turn on the power and extend cylinder to open impactor housing hood. 3. Lockout/tagout all power to the machine/plant. 4. Lock rotor in position with rotor lock pins provided. Use the following procedure to install the new wedge assembly. 1. Loosen impactor hood fasteners, three each side, and pivot away. page 1 of 6 Rotor Lock - Storage Position
7. Use impact wrench to thread wedge bolts into the wedge until only the bolt head is exposed. Wedge bolts Rotor Lock - Operational Position WARNING The rotor lock must be fully engaged to prevent rotor rotation while servicing. Failure to block against rotation could result in severe injury or death. 5. Apply Loctite Silver Grade (nickel) Anti-Seize or equivalent to 3 of the threads on the wedge bolts. 8. Attach blowbar to lifting tool. Attach lifting tool to lifting chains that can handle weights up to 550 lbs for 42 series HSI models and up to 1200 lbs. for 52 series HSI models. 9. Move blowbar into position across rotor pocket. Center blowbar on the rotor. Blowbar Blowbar Positioning Loctite Silver Grade Anti-Seize Application to Bolt Threads 6. 10. Position wedges in each pocket. 12. Use socket and included allen wrench extension to tighten down the wedge bolts in one of the center wedges. Positioning Wedge in Rotor Pocket 11. Position wedge retention rod into the opening on the back side of the blowbar. Make sure blowbar is still centered on the rotor. 13. Install washer and bolt to end of the wedge retention rod. Use impact wrench to tighten. Washer and bolt installed Wedge retention rod 14. Use impact wrench to tighten wedge bolts in the other center wedge (if applicable) and then the two outer wedges. 15. Tighten all wedge bolts again to ensure they are seated tightly. 16. Back each wedge bolt out one at a time and install a jam nut to the end of the bolt on the underside of the wedge. This jam nut will protect the threaded wedge pocket from contaminants. page 3 of 6
17. After installing the jam nut, retighten the bolt. 18. Repeat steps 13 and 14 for each wedge bolt. Jam nut 22. Hand-tighten the jam nuts until they are snug against the wedge base. 19. Use the impact wrench to tighten all wedge bolts down one more time. 20. Use a torque wrench to torque wedge bolts to 200 ft.lbs. Start at the center wedges and work to the outer wedges. 23. Use the wrench included with the kit to tighten jam nuts. Use a hammer on the wrench to snug-tighten jam nuts. Wrench for tightening jam nuts - included in the kit. 21. Repeat step 18 until 200 ft.lbs. torque is reached with a single click from the torque wrench. CAUTION It is essential for the wedge bolts to be torqued to 200 ft.lbs. Failure to properly torque the wedge bolts could lead to loosening of the bolts and damage to the horizontal shaft impactor. Jam Nut Tightening Wrench - Included With Kit page 4 of 6
24. Once blowbars are replaced, exit crushing area. Make sure all personnel and tools are clear of the crushing area before removing the rotor lock pin and closing the crusher hood. 25. Replace impactor hood fasteners and tighten. 26. Remove lockout/tagout and start the crusher. Run material through the crusher for 15 minutes. Stop, lockout/tagout crusher, and then recheck the wedge bolts for proper torque. Re-torque if needed. 27. Once the HSI has been converted to the updated wedge assembly, the existing shims and bracket can be removed from the unit. They will no longer be neeeded. The is a non-warranty Parts and Service Memo. KPI Service department estimates this job will take 1/2 hour per blowbar to complete.
