Lesson Program

Welcome to the Lesson Program at Springfield Riding Club. The purpose of the Riding Club is to create a world class equestrian center facilitating learning, connection, and interaction from grassroots equestrians all the way through to the elite level. Our riding lesson program is designed to teach safety and fundamental horsemanship for all disciplines at any level. Horseback riding offers a wide array of physical and mental benefits. It is a great activity for youth since it encompasses many life lessons simply in the general routine of caring for your horse and going for a ride. Whether you want to be able to ride down the trail into the woods or gallop over a brightly colored jumping course, the lesson program here at the Riding Club can move you along in your journey to reach your goal. Our instructors are all competent adult equestrians in their own areas of expertise. Feel free to check out their bios on our website. Each has their own unique personality and teaching style that may or may not work with the student. Because of this, during the first few sessions, you or your child may have a few different instructors and/or horses until the right fit is found. As the student progresses through the levels, the instructor may also change due to our areas of expertise and availability. While each instructor has a slightly different style, the theory is consistent across the program. Our goal here at the Springfield Riding Club is to create fun and safe experiences for riders of all levels and ages. If you have any questions about horses or riding, please feel free to approach any of the instructors with those questions. If you have any concerns, please feel free to talk to Elizabeth Brooks. You can email to lessons.ridemo417@gmail.com, or call 417.861.6640, or leave a comment in the comment box located by the office. We also welcome positive comments about our program or our instructors. Thank you for choosing Springfield Riding Club and happy riding. JE Brooks Elizabeth Brooks Manager, Springfield Riding Club Page 1 of 6 lessons.ridemo417@gmail.com 417.861.6640

Our intention is to provide a fun and safe learning environment for our students and a safe experience for all people that come to our facility. All beginning students in our riding program move through the same general progression: Beginners 1. Catching, leading & tying 2. Grooming & tacking 3. Basic riding position and directional cues (go, turn & stop) 4. Emergency dismount & emergency stop 5. Maintaining riding position at all three gaits Our beginners start out with lessons in leading and grooming horses before they ride. They start their riding on the lunge line with the instructor controlling the horse so the riders can learn balance at all three gaits before going out on their own to learn steering. This time is critical to their development as a rider and may last for some time. Early Intermediate 1. Rail work at all three gaits 2. Simple patterns 3. Riding outside & small group lessons 4. Simple obstacles Once the student is well balanced and comfortable at all three gaits, they have reached the level of intermediate rider. It is at this time that the student begins to look more for a discipline or direction they want to take their riding. From jumping or dressage to western pleasure, games or trail, we have an instructor to fit the student s needs. Depending on the direction and the availability of other students interested in the same discipline at or near the same level, intermediate students may move into group lessons or may continue with individual sessions. Advanced Intermediate 1. Introduction to hip and shoulder control 2. Refined transitions between all three gaits 3. Added complexity in patterns 4. General obstacles 5. Larger group sessions As students move closer to competing and/or owning their own horse, they need to work through the remainder of the intermediate concepts. Developing a working knowledge, and skill in handling a horse in the presence of others, and through more demanding courses builds the needed confidence and ability to safely manage a horse on one s own. Lesson Policies Fees, Registration and Payment Registration begins 4 weeks before the session starts and ends the Friday before the next session starts. Beginner lessons are a flat $40 per hour Group lessons are $30 per hour, per student Intermediate lessons are $50 per hour or $30 for a half-hour. Time spots, lesson horses, and instructors are not committed until payment is received. All lesson payments from students are made to the Springfield Riding Club. Initial scheduling is done through the Riding Club only. Make-up sessions may be scheduled with the instructor. Safety All students are required to wear boots with a heel, long pants, and a helmet while riding. Close-toed shoes are required for anyone that will be getting within reach of a horse. We reserve the right to ask anyone in open toed shoes to remain in restricted human-only areas for their own safety. Non-riders/siblings/friends are welcome to come along to the barn during lessons with a signed release. Parents, siblings, friends, and other non-riders are not permitted into the pastures, stalls, or paddocks where horses are present. Additional children need to be in sight of a responsible adult at all times unless they are in the viewing room or front room enjoying our TV or big screen TV. When horses are present, only the students and the instructors are permitted in the riding areas. No outside horses allowed for beginners. Cancellation Policy and Missed Lessons If 24 hours notice of a cancellation is not given, that lesson fee cannot be refunded. Cancellation from a full session is allowed with full refund up to the Friday before the session starts. The Riding Club must be notified with at least 48 hours notice prior to the missed lesson to be eligible for a makeup lesson. Make-up lessons depend on availability. The exception to this would be for student illness or family emergency. Lessons and Parental Involvement We appreciate parents that are interested in being involved with their children s lessons. Our instructors are happy to answer any questions you have about the horse, equipment, or riding in general. Please remember your student is here to learn from the instructor. We respectfully request that you do not interrupt or give your own instruction to students during their lessons. We also ask that you do not step in to do something for the student unless there is a grave, immediate safety concern. When deemed ready, students are expected to lead, groom, and tack their own horses without assistance from parents or instructor. Our climate controlled viewing room is set up to provide a comfortable environment from which to watch lessons. We ask that parents take advantage of this space whenever possible to leave the aisles clear for horse traffic. Horses We have a large selection of lesson horses for beginners to use for lessons. We also have horses suitable for intermediate and discipline specific lessons. Instructors reserve the right to decide which horse students need to ride at any particular time. We know horse ownership is an exciting prospect and encourage our students to lease or buy a horse when the time is right. Our instructors are always available to help you in your buying or leasing process and we strongly encourage you to take advantage of their knowledge to ensure you get the right horse for you and have a good buying experience.
