These routes feature some of the most beautiful scenery in North Carolina. Riders will pass through the Yadkin Valley s wine country which happens to be the largest concentration of wineries in the Carolinas. We even use a couple as our rest stops! Riders will also enjoy gorgeous water views of the Yadkin River, one of the longest rivers in North Carolina. This year we will be marking the routes with five different colors, yellow, orange, blue, green and pink. Please make note of these changes on your cue sheets and along the route. n Follow PINK on Saturday for 15 mile route and Sunday for 17 mile route n Follow BLUE on Saturday for 35 mile route and Sunday for 30 mile route n Follow ORANGE on Saturday for 50 mile route and Sunday for 45 mile route n Follow GREEN on Saturday for the 80 mile route and Sunday for the 75 mile route. n Follow YELLOW on Saturday for the 100 mile route and Sunday for the 100 mile route. Both days also offer access to Tanglewood Park s mountain bike trails! We offer a fully supported rest stop out on the trails complete with mechanical support. bikemstanglewood.org 3

While we love all our route options both days, we highly recommend the Sunday routes, especially the 30 or 45 as the views are simply gorgeous. This route was new in 2015 and we have worked hard with our route support team to ensure a safe and well-supported route. ROUTE CLOSINGS Route will be closed at 5 p.m. on Saturday and 4 p.m. on Sunday. Remaining cyclists will be transported in SAG vehicles to the finish. To help ensure the safety of all cyclists, all rest stops will have posted open & closing hours. Pay attention to these as you stop at rest stops along the route. If you are completing a Century, you must maintain a pace of 13 mph. FAMILY AND FRIENDS AT THE EVENT Family and friends are welcome! Invite them to cheer you on at the finish line and enjoy the weekend with you. Meal tickets are available for purchase for $10 on our website prior to the ride and at the Headquarters Tent inside the Team Village area of Tanglewood Park during event weekend. We also welcome spectators to the finish line at Tanglewood Park! PERSONAL OR TEAM SAGS No Personal or Team SAGs are allowed on the route or at rest stop areas. CUE SHEETS Where to find them: n Headquarters Tent and Rider Check-In Area at Tanglewood Park n Downloadable at www.bikemstanglewood.org approximately two weeks prior to ride weekend. Radio Communication is available at all rest stops. Medics are available at all rest stops and emergency vehicles. Bike medics will be roaming the route. SAG Vehicles give a lift to riders in need and can be identified by car magnets that state MS Support Vehicle. To signal a SAG vehicle: (1) move off the road and out of the path of other riders (2) dismount and stand near your bike (3) give a thumbs down to the SAG vehicle. At peak hours, SAG vehicles may be full, so please be patient until the next SAG vehicle arrives. 4 2017 Bike MS: Tour to Tanglewood Pre-ride Newsletter

Ride Marshals will be traveling among event participants to ensure that all rules of the road are being obeyed and that cyclists are riding in a safe manner. Please bring your route maps; be aware that any last minute route revisions may not be captured on these maps. To avoid getting off course, follow all route signage and route marshals. CYCLING SAFETY Our focus is to provide a high quality, safe and fun bicycling experience. While we do an enormous amount of planning to provide for your safety, we ask that you do your part prior to the ride by visiting our bicycle safety page at bikemstanglewood.org where you will find cycling manuals, safety videos, safe cycling tips and links to more information. Cue sheets will be provided at packet pick-up and will be available online at www.bikemstanglewood.org. Please study these closely and make sure to bring it to the ride. RIDE SAFE. RIDE SMART. BIKE MS SAFETY POLICY Should a cyclist choose to behave, act, or ride in a manner that is endangering themselves or others, route safety support have been instructed to remove their bib and wristband and prohibit them from continuing on the Ride. Please remember this is a ride, not a race. To ensure you have the best experience event weekend, it is a requirement that you have your bike inspected at one of our sponsoring bike shops prior to the ride. The Bike MS Inspection Form serves to identify any major mechanical issues that need to be repaired prior to the ride, and ensures your bike is in excellent riding condition so that everyone makes it safely to the finish line. RIDE IDENTIFICATION Wristbands must be worn at all times over the event weekend to receive access to event amenities. Thank you for helping us keep this event fun and fulfilling for all registered participants. Rider bib numbers change year to year and are used for identification of your bicycle at the Ride. The lowest bib numbers are in orange and are reserved for participants who were the top 100 fundraisers in 2016. Please show your appreciation for this amazing group of top fundraisers. FUNDRAISING: The Bike MS campaign funds promising MS research & provides vital services for people living with MS nationwide, including 18,000 in the Carolinas. You & your fundraising dollars are the reason we have support opportunities available for those affected by MS including educational programs, professional education for healthcare professionals, self-help groups, medical equipment loan, financial assistance, wellness programs, advocacy, care management, respite care, & direct assistance to the thousands of people living with MS. FIVE WAYS TO MAXIMIZE FUNDRAISING EFFORTS 1. Make It Personal- emails, hand written notes, letters, social media posts etc. 2. The more money you raise, the more perks you receive. If you raise $2,000 or more in 2017 you earn prime time parking at Tanglewood Park. You will be contacted beforehand to ensure you have the correct pass for reserved parking. TURNING IN DONATIONS The most efficient and convenient way to turn in donations is to have your donors contribute to your personal web page. I Ride with MS People who ride in Bike MS may do so to support family members, friends or coworkers who have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. But, there are also legions of participants who live and ride with the disease, despite challenges such as fatigue or weakness. I Ride with MS is a special Society program that celebrates Bike MS cyclists who are also living with multiple sclerosis. Anyone living with MS who is interested in cycling to support the MS movement can join the program, enjoy special day-of-event benefits and receive a complimentary I Ride with MS jersey. Genzyme and MS One to One, and Primal Wear are proud supporters of the I Ride with MS program, available through all 100 Bike MS events nationwide. I Ride with MS participants are not only committed to cycling to create a world free of MS, but to increasing awareness. EVERY HILL MAKES ME STRONGER. EVERY HILL I BIKE, EVERY HILL I RUN, EVERY HILL IN LIFE MAKES ME STRONGER. DI JONES In 2006, at age 53, I was diagnosed with MS. It was scary! I didn t know anyone who had MS and I didn t know anything about the disease, but I knew I could be strong. I knew because, in 1986, I had been diagnosed with breast cancer, and then again in 1988, and once more in 1995, and I fought that battle. So, I knew I could do the same with MS. The fight began with my first Bike MS event from Richmond to Williamsburg, VA. After moving to North Carolina in 2007, I immediately joined Team Canterbury to be part of the NC Bike MS events. Those of us who live with MS will continue to tackle those hills and stay strong, but we don t do it alone. Knowing we have the support of family, friends and events such as Bike MS give us strength and hope and keep us climbing. 10 2017 Bike MS: Tour to Tanglewood Pre-ride Newsletter
